God's Entering - The All-Pervading Presence of the Supreme Lord
When scientists study the universe, they observe planets floating perfectly in orbit, complex biological systems functioning seamlessly, and atoms bound by immense energy. Materialists attribute this to random physical laws, but the Vedic literatures offer a deeply profound, personal explanation. The material creation is not a clockwork machine left to run on its own; it is actively animated and sustained because the Supreme Personality of Godhead has personally entered it. Śrīla Prabhupāda explains the vast science of God's entering, detailing how the Lord expands as the three puruṣa-avatāras to enter the cosmos, the individual universes, and the very atomic particles of existence. By understanding how the Lord enters the material elements to enliven them, how He enters our hearts as the Supersoul, and how He enters specific pastimes to protect His devotees, we can recognize the all-pervading, loving presence of the Absolute Truth.
Entering to Enliven the Cosmos
Material nature (prakṛti) is composed of dead, unconscious elements. Śrīla Prabhupāda explains that the cosmic manifestation only begins to function when the Supreme Lord personally enters into the total material energy (mahat-tattva), agitating the elements and waking the universe from its slumber.
- The energy which acts as material nature in a combination of twenty-three ingredients is not the final source of creation. The Lord enters into the elements and applies His energy, called Kali. In all other Vedic scriptures the same principle is accepted.
- The same principle exists in the universal creation: the ingredients were present, but only when the Lord entered into the material elements was matter actually agitated. That is the cause of creation. We can see this in our ordinary experience.
- Thus when the Personality of Godhead entered into the elements by His energy, all the living entities were enlivened into different activities, just as one is engaged in his work after awakening from sleep.
- We get information from the Vedic literature that the Lord Himself first entered the vacuum of the material universe, and thus all things gradually developed one after another.
The Three Puruṣa Expansions
To efficiently manage the creation, the Lord expands into three specific Viṣṇu forms. Śrīla Prabhupāda beautifully details how Mahā-Viṣṇu creates the universes, Garbhodakaśāyī Viṣṇu enters each specific universe, and Kṣīrodakaśāyī Viṣṇu enters every living being and atom.
- It is a fact that the Supreme Lord, the Personality of Godhead, in His Paramatma feature, enters the creation of this material world as Maha-Visnu, Garbhodakasayi Visnu and Ksirodakasayi Visnu.
- I (Brahma) worship the primeval Lord, Govinda, the original Personality of Godhead. By His partial plenary expansion as Maha-Visnu, He enters into material nature. Then He enters every universe as Garbhodakasayi Visnu.
- As Visnu He enters into every body materially created. As Garbhodakasayi Visnu He enters into every universe, and as Ksirodakasayi Visnu He enters the body of every living being.
- The Lord enters every universe as Garbhodakasayi Visnu and then expands Himself as Ksirodakasayi Visnu to enter the hearts of all living entities and even enter the atoms. Andantara-stha-paramanu-cayantara-stham - Brahma-samhita (5.35).
Entering the Atoms and Planetary Orbits
The Lord's all-pervading nature means there is no place where He is not present. Śrīla Prabhupāda emphasizes that the Lord enters into the smallest atomic particle and simultaneously enters the massive planetary systems, keeping them perfectly suspended in space by His supreme energy.
- Brahma-samhita (5.35): "I worship the Personality of Godhead, Govinda, who by one of His plenary portions enters the existence of every universe and every atomic particle and thus manifests His infinite energy unlimitedly throughout the material creation."
- Because of His all-pervasiveness, He (The Supreme Lord) is able to enter not only into the hearts of the living entities, but even into the atoms also. As the Supersoul, He is the controller of all activities of the living entities.
- The Personality of Godhead says (in Bhagavad-gita 15.13) - I enter into each planet, and by My energy they stay in orbit.
- All these planets are floating in space, and this is due to the entrance of the supreme energy of the Supreme Personality of Godhead. His energy is sustaining each planet, just like a handful of dust.
The Supersoul Within the Heart
The Lord is not just a cosmic force; He is the most intimate friend of every living entity. As the Supersoul (Paramātmā), Śrīla Prabhupāda explains that the Lord enters the heart of every being, guiding them and fulfilling their desires while remaining completely aloof from the material body.
- The Lord enters the hearts of all living entities as the Supersoul and He gives them intelligence and fulfills their material desires. This is also confirmed in Bhagavad-gita (15.15). Sarvasya caham hrdi sannivistah. "I am sitting in everyone's heart."
- My dear Lord, after creating by Your own potencies, You enter within the creation in four kinds of forms. Being within the hearts of the living entities, You know them and know how they are enjoying their senses.
- The Personality of Godhead, in His Paramatma feature, enters the creation of this material world as Maha-Visnu, Garbhodakasayi Visnu and Ksirodakasayi Visnu, and in a very friendly attitude the Lord sits along with the conditioned soul in the body.
- Although the Paramatma enters the heart of the jivatma, who is influenced and designated by a material body, the Paramatma has nothing to do with the jivatma's body.
Defeating Impersonal Misconceptions
A common philosophical error is pantheism—the idea that because God enters everything, everything has become God. Śrīla Prabhupāda strictly refutes this Māyāvādī misconception, using clear logic to prove that the Lord maintains His distinct, supreme identity even while entering the material creation.
- A perfect devotee does not make the mistake of thinking that because the Supreme Personality of Godhead as Paramatma has entered into the body of every living entity, every living entity has become the Supreme Personality of Godhead. This is foolishness.
- Suppose a person enters into a room; that does not mean that the room has become that person. Similarly, that the Supreme Lord has entered into each of the 8,400,000 types of material bodies does not mean that each of these bodies has become Supreme Lord.
- Mayavadi philosophers wrongly think that because the Supreme Person has entered the body of a poor man, the Supreme Lord has become daridra-narayana, or poor Narayana. These are all blasphemous statements of atheists and nondevotees.
- One should realize that in the fire, in the spiritual master, in one's self and in all living entities - in all circumstances and conditions - the Supreme Personality of Godhead, Visnu, has simultaneously entered and not entered.
Entering to Perform Transcendental Pastimes
Beyond His cosmic maintenance, the Supreme Lord dynamically enters the material world to execute intimate, loving pastimes. Śrīla Prabhupāda describes how the Lord enters specific situations—whether the womb of a devotee, the body of an enemy, or the forests of Vṛndāvana—purely out of causeless mercy.
- Queen Kunti experienced personally that Lord Krsna was present before her, yet He entered within the womb of Uttara to save her embryo from the attack of Asvatthama's brahmastra.
- Lord Vamanadeva continued: O King of the demons, after Lord Visnu made this decision, He entered the body of His enemy Hiranyakasipu, who was running after Him with great force.
- When the Lord entered the forest of Vrndavana, all the inhabitants of the forest, both animate and inanimate, were eager to receive Him. He saw that the flowers of the forest, all fully blossoming, were weeping in ecstasy, honey flowing down their petals.
- Persons who are constantly engaged in the transcendental meditation of seeing Krsna, internally and externally, by thinking of Him playing the flute, entering Vrndavana forest and tending the cows with the boys have really attained the perfection of samadhi.
Conclusion
A deep and thorough study of the Vedic literatures permanently dispels the idea that God created the universe and then abandoned it to run independently. As Śrīla Prabhupāda masterfully explains, the Supreme Personality of Godhead is intimately and actively involved in every aspect of existence through His divine potency of entering. The material ingredients (prakṛti) are entirely lifeless until the Lord enters them, agitating the mahat-tattva and enlivening the creation just as a sleeping man is awakened. To manage this massive cosmic display, the Lord expands into the three puruṣa-avatāras. Mahā-Viṣṇu breathes out the universes, Garbhodakaśāyī Viṣṇu enters each individual universe to illuminate the darkness, and Kṣīrodakaśāyī Viṣṇu enters every atomic particle (aṇḍāntara-stha-paramāṇu-cayāntara-stham) and every planetary orbit, sustaining them by His supreme energy. Furthermore, the Lord enters the heart of every single living entity as the Supersoul (Paramātmā), sitting as a friendly witness who fulfills desires and provides intelligence. However, Śrīla Prabhupāda strictly cautions against the foolish Māyāvādī conclusion that because God has entered everything, everything has become God. Just as a man entering a room does not become the room, the Lord remains supremely distinct from the material bodies He enters. The most beautiful aspect of the Lord's entering is seen in His direct, personal pastimes. The Lord defies all material logic by entering the womb of Uttarā to protect His devotee Parīkṣit, entering the body of Hiraṇyakaśipu to annihilate him, and joyfully entering the blossoming forests of Vṛndāvana to exchange pure love with His cowherd friends. Ultimately, by constantly meditating on how the Lord enters the universe and our hearts, we attain the perfection of samādhi and prepare ourselves to enter His eternal, transcendental abode.
