God's Enemies - The Causeless Mercy of the Absolute Truth
In the material world, the concept of an enemy invokes feelings of hatred, fear, and malice. Worldly conflicts are characterized by cruelty and a desire for the absolute destruction of the opposition. However, when we study the activities of the Supreme Personality of Godhead, the concept of an "enemy" takes on an entirely different, transcendental dimension. Because God is absolute, everything associated with Him—even His wrath—is perfectly pure and ultimately beneficial. Śrīla Prabhupāda explains that the Lord actually has no enemies, but He creates them simply to enjoy the dynamic flavor of a fight. Furthermore, those who act as God's enemies receive an astonishing benediction: simply by being killed by the Lord, they achieve spiritual liberation. By understanding the nature of God's enemies, His use of divine weapons, and the final destination of the demons, we gain profound insight into the causeless mercy of the Absolute Truth.
The Illusion of Enmity
The very idea that the Supreme Lord could have an enemy is a material illusion. Śrīla Prabhupāda highlights the statements of the Bhagavad-gītā, confirming that the Lord is completely equal to everyone and that no living entity possesses the power to actually threaten or harm Him.
- Dear Lord, You have no enemies or friends. Therefore You are equal to everyone. You cannot be contaminated by sinful activities, and Your transcendental form is always beyond the material creation.
- In Bhagavad-gita (9.29) the Lord says, I am equal to everyone. No one is dear to Me, nor is anyone My enemy.
- No one can be the Lord's enemy, since who could be more powerful than the Lord? There is actually no question of anyone's being His enemy.
- The Supreme Lord cannot have any enemy, nor can a so-called enemy harm Him because He is ajita, or unconquerable. But still He takes pleasure when His pure devotee beats Him like an enemy or rebukes Him from a superior position.
The Desire to Fight
If the Lord is peaceful and has no actual enemies, why are the Purāṇas filled with epic battles? Śrīla Prabhupāda reveals that the Lord possesses every possible desire, including the fighting spirit. To fulfill this, He specifically arranges for His own eternal servants to temporarily play the role of adversaries.
- When He (The Lord) desires to fight with someone, He has to find an enemy, but in the Vaikuntha world there is no enemy. Therefore He sometimes comes to the material world as an incarnation in order to manifest His fighting spirit.
- Hiranyakasipu and Hiranyaksa were formerly Jaya and Vijaya, the gatekeepers in Vaikuntha, but by the desire of the Lord, they became His enemies for three lives.
- Jaya and Vijaya were very much perturbed (by the curse), but the Lord advised them to act as enemies, for then they would return after three births; otherwise, ordinarily, they would have to take seven births.
- The Lord is supremely perfect, and whenever He enacts His transcendental pastimes as a son, a rival or an object of enmity, He plays the part so perfectly that even pure devotees like Uddhava are bewildered.
The Weapons of Annihilation
When the Lord descends to protect the pious, He brings His transcendental weapons to crush the atheists. Śrīla Prabhupāda vividly describes how the Lord expertly wields His club, arrows, and the fearful Sudarśana cakra to smash the earthly bodies of the demons and save the universe.
- My Lord, You kill all the enemies of the world in Your multifarious incarnations in the families of men, animals, demigods, rsis, aquatics and so on. Thus You illuminate the worlds with transcendental knowledge.
- Being very pleased by the unalloyed devotion of Maharaja Ambarisa, the Supreme Personality of Godhead gave the King His disc, which is fearful to enemies and which always protects the devotee from enemies and adversities.
- O protector of the universe, you are engaged by the Supreme Personality of Godhead as His all-powerful weapon in killing the envious enemies. For the benefit of our entire dynasty, kindly favor this poor brahmana. This will certainly be a favor for all of us.
- As mud is kneaded with water and earth, so the earthly bodies of the enemies of the Lord, or the atheists, are smashed by the club of the Lord, which becomes muddied with the blood of such demons.
Liberation Through Enmity
The yoga system demands that a practitioner constantly fix their mind upon the Supreme Lord. Ironically, the Lord's enemies achieve this constant meditation through sheer terror and hatred. Śrīla Prabhupāda teaches that this intense absorption (vairānubandhena) is so powerful that it actually grants them salvation.
- Vairanubandhena. Acting like the Lord's enemy is also beneficial for the living entity.
- If even the enemies of the Lord achieve salvation by constantly thinking about the Lord, what is to be said of pure devotees who always engage in the Lord's service and who think of nothing but the Lord in every activity.
- Kamsa was attached to bhakti-yoga by dint of fear of his death. Thus bhakti-yoga is so powerful that even becoming an enemy of the Lord and always thinking of Him can deliver one very quickly.
- He (God) is so kind that He awards salvation even to His enemies because they come into contact with Him and are indirectly absorbed in Him by their inimical thoughts.
The Destination of the Enemies
When a demon is struck by the transcendental hand or weapon of the Lord, their material contamination is instantly destroyed. Śrīla Prabhupāda confirms that the Lord, out of His causeless mercy, allows these vanquished enemies to enter the spiritual kingdom and merge into His bodily effulgence.
- The Lord, being all that is described above, maintains the affairs of the creation, and by His so doing He gives salvation even to His enemies who are killed by Him.
- The Lord is so kind, however, that even though they are His enemies, they are still allowed to enter into the spiritual kingdom and remain in the impersonal brahma-jyoti, the undifferentiated light of the absolute.
- The impersonalists, yogis and enemies of the Lord enter into the Lord's transcendental effulgence.
- In spite of his strenuous efforts to attain perfect knowledge, the impersonalist attains merging into the impersonal oneness of the brahmajyoti of the Lord, which is also attained by the enemies of the Lord simply because of their being killed by Him.
Impersonalists as Enemies
There is a profound philosophical parallel between the sword-wielding demons and the speculative impersonal philosophers. Śrīla Prabhupāda equates the two, explaining that because impersonalists are envious of the Lord's personal form and opulence, they are considered enemies of God and receive the exact same reward as the slain demons.
- So it is to be understood that they are of similar classification. And actually the impersonalists are enemies of God because they cannot tolerate the unparallelled opulence of the Lord.
- The impersonalist philosophers are in one sense like the enemies of the Lord because the out-and-out enemies of the Lord and the impersonalists are both allowed to enter only into the impersonal effulgence of the brahma-jyoti.
- The impersonalists, therefore, are no more favored than the enemies of the Lord; rather, they are both on the same level of spiritual salvation.
- The personified Vedas continued, "In other words, both the yogis and the great, wise philosophical speculators ultimately attain the impersonal Brahman effulgence, which is automatically attained by the demons who are regular enemies of the Lord."
Conclusion
A comprehensive understanding of the Absolute Truth requires acknowledging the supreme benevolence of the Lord's actions—even when He appears to act aggressively. As Śrīla Prabhupāda systematically explains, the Supreme Personality of Godhead does not possess any actual enemies. No living entity has the power to rival or conquer Him. However, because the Lord is full in all desires, He occasionally wishes to exhibit His fighting spirit. To execute these thrilling pastimes, He orchestrates for His own exalted, eternal associates—such as Jaya and Vijaya—to temporarily descend into the material world and act as His adversaries. When the Lord subsequently descends to battle these demons, His use of transcendental weapons is not an act of mundane hatred, but an act of supreme purification. Because the enemies of God, such as Kaṁsa and Hiraṇyakaśipu, are constantly absorbed in thoughts of the Lord through fear and enmity (vairānubandhena), they inadvertently perform a highly concentrated form of meditation. Śrīla Prabhupāda confirms that by the touch of the Lord's hand or weapon, these enemies are immediately purified of their material contamination and granted spiritual liberation. They are allowed to enter the spiritual sky and merge into the brahmajyoti, the impersonal effulgence radiating from the Lord's body. Interestingly, this exact same destination is the highest goal sought by the Māyāvādī impersonalists and dry mental speculators. Because the impersonalists deny the beautiful, personal form of the Lord and envy His unparalleled opulence, the Vedic literatures classify them on the same level as the demons. Ultimately, whether one opposes the Lord physically with a sword or philosophically with flawed logic, the Absolute Truth is so magnanimous that He awards them both spiritual salvation, reserving the highest perfection of eternal, loving service only for His surrendered devotees.
