God's Direction - Seated as on a Machine
When we observe the precision of the universe—the exact orbit of the planets, the reliable succession of the seasons, and the complex biology of living entities—it is natural to wonder who is orchestrating this massive display. Atheistic scientists confidently declare that nature operates automatically, driven by blind physical laws. However, the Vedic literatures dismantle this theory, explaining that laws cannot exist without a lawmaker, and machines cannot operate without a director. Śrīla Prabhupāda establishes that every aspect of existence, from the macrocosmic movements of the galaxies to the microcosmic beating of a human heart, functions strictly under the direction of the Supreme Personality of Godhead. By understanding how the Lord directs material nature, orchestrates the laws of karma, and guides His pure devotees, we can learn how to perfectly align our lives with the supreme will.
The Superintendent of Material Nature
The material energy, though incredibly powerful, is entirely dependent. Śrīla Prabhupāda continuously quotes the Bhagavad-gītā (mayādhyakṣeṇa prakṛtiḥ) to prove that the flawless execution of physical laws—such as gravity, weather, and planetary orbits—is entirely due to the Lord's direction.
- The Lord states in Bhagavad-gita, mayadhyaksena prakrtih suyate: "Nature is working under My direction." The foolish person thinks that nature is working automatically, but such an atheistic theory is not supported in the Vedic literature.
- As stated in the Bhagavad-gita, the modes of nature act under His direction only and as such no natural functions are blind or automatic. The power behind the activities is the supervision of the Lord and thus He is never inactive as is wrongly conceived.
- The materialists can explain that the planets are floating by the law of gravitation, but the law of gravitation works under the control or direction of the Supreme Lord.
- The rose in the garden gradually takes its shape and color to become beautiful and sweet not by a blind physical law, although it appears like that. Behind that physical law is the direction of the complete consciousness of the Supreme Lord.
Seated as on a Machine
For the individual soul, the material body is merely a vehicle. Śrīla Prabhupāda explains the famous Bhagavad-gītā verse confirming that the Lord is seated within the heart, directing the living entity who is riding on the machine of the material body, driven by the modes of nature.
- The Supreme Lord is situated in everyone's heart, O Arjuna, and is directing the wanderings of all living entities, who are seated as on a machine, made of the material energy. The Lord gives everyone an opportunity to fulfill his ambitions.
- The body is a kind of machine created and offered to the living entity by the material energy under the direction of the Supreme Personality of Godhead.
- According to the living entity's desires, he is wandering from one body to another and from one planet to another, under the direction of the Supreme Personality of Godhead, Paramatma.
- The legs move forward because the eyes see what is in front of them, and the hand touches because the eyes see touchable entities. Similarly, every living being acts according to the direction of the Supersoul, who is situated within the heart.
The Master of the Demigods
Even those who recognize higher powers often mistake the demigods as independent creators or controllers. Śrīla Prabhupāda clarifies that the greatest universal administrators, including Lord Brahmā, Lord Śiva, and the sun-god, are strictly subordinate to the Lord's direction.
- The Supreme Personality of Godhead is the supreme independent controlling person, and all the demigods, including Lord Brahma, Lord Siva, Indra (the King of heaven), the king of the moon planet and the king of the sun planet, work under His direction.
- In the Second Canto of Srimad-Bhagavatam, Lord Brahma says, "Both Lord Siva and I are engaged by the Supreme Personality of Godhead to act in different capacities under His direction."
- Atri Muni, by his breathing exercise, concentrated on the Supersoul, or the Lord of the universe. As confirmed in Bhagavad-gita, the Lord of the universe is Vasudeva and, by the direction of Vasudeva, Lord Brahma and Lord Siva work.
- The sun-god, the moon-god, the fire-god and the air-god are working under the direction of the Supreme Lord.
The Law of Karma and Forgetfulness
When a soul decides to rebel and act independently of God, they are not left entirely alone; they are placed under the jurisdiction of māyā. Śrīla Prabhupāda explains that the Lord directs the rebellious souls by providing them with forgetfulness and the reactions of their karma.
- One must act according to the direction of the Lord within the heart, but because the conditioned soul wants to act independently, the Lord gives him the facility to act and experience the reactions.
- The Lord says, "I am sitting in everyone's heart, and due to Me one is forgetful or one is alive in knowledge." The forgetfulness of the conditioned soul is also due to the direction of the Supreme Lord.
- The nondevotees challenge the authority of the Supreme Lord, and therefore the Lord dictates in such a way that the nondevotees forget the Lord's service, life after life, and are punished by the laws of nature.
- If one refuses to act under the direction of the Supreme Lord, then he is compelled to act by the modes in which he is situated. Everyone is under the spell of a particular combination of the modes of nature and is acting in that way.
Guiding the Sincere Devotee
The Lord's direction changes drastically for those who wish to return to Him. Instead of orchestrating karma, the Lord becomes the supreme guide. Śrīla Prabhupāda highlights how the Lord directs sincere souls both from within as the Supersoul, and from without as the spiritual master.
- Directions are given to the sincere devotee in two ways: one is by way of the saints, scriptures and spiritual master, and the other is by way of the Lord Himself, who resides within the heart of everyone.
- The Lord helps us by giving us directions how to act in devotional service and thus advance on the path back home, back to Godhead. He instructs us outwardly in the form of the spiritual master.
- In the beginning, when a devotee is serious and sincere, the Lord gives him directions from within to approach a bona fide spiritual master.
- In order to show specific favor to the devotee, directs the devotee from within in such a way that ultimately he is delivered from the entanglement of material existence.
Transcending Karmic Reactions
When a person acts entirely under the direction of the Supreme Lord, they are freed from all material consequences. Śrīla Prabhupāda compares this to a citizen acting under the order of the state; because the devotee acts for the Lord, their actions are considered akarma (without reaction).
- In one case we are acting according to our own whims, and in the other we are acting under the direction of the government. Similarly, when we act under direction of Krsna, our actions performed are called akarma, for that kind of activity has no reaction.
- He (Krsna) is engaging everyone in certain activities. Acts done under His direction from within yield no reaction, either in this life or in the life after death.
- Anyone who is acting in Krsna consciousness under the direction of the Supersoul or the Supreme Personality of Godhead, even though killing, does not kill. Nor is he ever affected with the reaction of such killing.
- The Supreme Lord is the super cause. Under these circumstances, he who is acting in Krsna consciousness under the direction of the Supersoul situated within the heart is naturally not bound by any activity.
The Perfection of Surrender
The ultimate goal of human life is not to become an independent master, but a perfectly directed servant. Śrīla Prabhupāda explains that when a living entity voluntarily surrenders and accepts the direction of the Supreme Lord, they achieve the absolute perfection of religion and happiness.
- The Isopanisad directs that one should live by the direction of the Lord and not at one's sweet will.
- Good citizenship means living under the direction of the government. That is good citizenship. Similarly, human life means to live nicely under the direction of God. The cats and dogs, they cannot understand.
- When we accept the leadership of God and His direction, that is religion; I don't think on principle the Communist can change this idea.
- The Lord takes charge of fully surrendered souls; thus all problems are solved simply by surrendering oneself unto the Lord and acting in terms of His directions.
Following the Spiritual Master
Because the Supreme Lord is not physically present before our eyes, He provides His direction through His authorized representative. Śrīla Prabhupāda emphasizes that following the direction of the bona fide spiritual master is identical to following the direction of the Supreme Lord Himself.
- Because the spiritual master is the representative of the Supreme Lord, his direction is directly the direction of the Supreme Lord.
- If we act in Krsna consciousness under the direction of the Lord and His representative, then everything is sanctified.
- This false sense of proprietorship can be avoided simply by engaging oneself in devotional service under the direction of the Supreme Lord or His bona fide representative.
- The word mad-vyapasrayah means under the protection of the Supreme Lord. To be free from material contamination, a pure devotee acts under the direction of the Supreme Lord or His representative, the spiritual master.
Conclusion
A comprehensive understanding of the Vedas completely shatters the illusion of independence. As Śrīla Prabhupāda repeatedly clarifies, absolutely nothing in the universe moves without the direction of the Supreme Personality of Godhead. The atheistic idea that nature functions automatically or blindly is a foolish misconception. Under the Lord's superintendence (mayādhyakṣeṇa prakṛtiḥ), the material energy executes physical laws with perfect precision, causing the sun to shine, the rain to fall, and the planets to float. Even the most exalted universal officers, such as Lord Brahmā and Lord Śiva, perform their duties strictly under the Lord's direction. For the individual living entity, the Lord resides in the heart as the Supersoul, directing the soul's wanderings as it rides on the machine of the material body. When a soul rebelliously desires to exploit the material world, the Lord directs them into the clutches of māyā, awarding them forgetfulness and the reactions of their karma. However, when a soul displays genuine sincerity, the Lord's direction becomes an act of supreme compassion. He directs the sincere soul from within, providing the intelligence to advance, and directs them from without through the spiritual master and the scriptures. By voluntarily surrendering to this divine guidance, the devotee is completely freed from all karmic reactions, just as a soldier acting under the direction of the state is not held responsible for their actions on the battlefield. Ultimately, true religion and the perfection of human life are simply defined by giving up one's whimsical desires and living peacefully under the flawless direction of the Supreme Lord and His bona fide representative.
