God's Different Energies - The Dynamic Expansion of the Absolute Truth
When confronted with the vastness of the universe and the infinite varieties of life, the human mind struggles to trace everything back to a single source. If God is one, how can there be so much diversity? Furthermore, if God created the material world, did He become the material world and lose His personal identity? The Vedic literatures resolve these profound questions through the science of God's energies. The Śvetāśvatara Upaniṣad states, parasya śaktir vividhaiva śrūyate: the Supreme Lord possesses multi-energies. Śrīla Prabhupāda explains that the entire cosmic manifestation is nothing but the dynamic interplay of these different energies. By understanding how the Supreme Personality of Godhead utilizes His internal, external, and marginal potencies, we can grasp the ultimate philosophical truth of simultaneous oneness and difference.
The Three Primary Energies
To understand the Absolute Truth, one must first identify the major divisions of His potencies. Śrīla Prabhupāda categorizes the Lord's expansions into three primary energies: the spiritual, the material, and the marginal living entities.
- The Supreme Personality of Godhead is manifested by His different energies - the material energy, the spiritual energy and the marginal energy.
- As discussed in the Seventh Chapter of Bhagavad-gita, the entire material cosmic manifestation is only a combination of His (Govinda's) two different energies, the superior, spiritual energy and the inferior, material energy.
- Without the living entities, this material nature has no value. Both emanate from the pores of the transcendental body of Lord Maha-Visnu. They are different energies.
- The material nature, the cosmic manifestation and the living entities, are but different energies of the Lord (fire).
The Analogy of the Fire
How can the Lord remain in His spiritual abode while simultaneously pervading the entire universe? Śrīla Prabhupāda repeatedly employs the Vedic analogy of fire to illustrate how God's energies expand endlessly without diminishing His original form.
- In the Visnu Purana it is said, Whatever we actually see in the cosmic manifestation - be it matter or the activities of the living entities - is simply an expansion of the energies of the Lord, as heat and light are the different expansions of fire.
- The Lord (Caitanya) cites a verse from Visnu Purana (1.22.52): As fire emanating from one place diffuses its illumination and heat all around, so the Lord, although situated in one place in the spiritual world, manifests His different energies everywhere.
- Whatever we see in this world is simply an expansion of different energies of the Supreme Personality of Godhead, who is exactly like a fire that spreads illumination for a long distance although it is situated in one place.
- The fact is that there is nothing but God within and without. Everything is a manifestation of His different energies, like the heat and light emanating from a fire, and in this way there is a oneness among His diverse energies.
Unchanged by Transformation
The Māyāvāda philosophers theorize that if God becomes the world, He must lose His individual personality. Śrīla Prabhupāda rigorously defeats this idea, explaining that while the energies transform into the cosmic manifestation, the supreme energetic source remains eternally unchanged.
- In this verse it is clearly mentioned that the Supreme Personality of Godhead exerts His different energies in the creation; it is not that He Himself is transformed into material creations.
- It is not necessary for the original cause, the Supreme Personality of Godhead, to change due to the changes or transformations of His different energies.
- Although the energies (the superior energy and the the inferior energy of the Supreme Lord) are simultaneously one with the Lord and different from Him, the Lord never loses His personal form due to the transformation of His different energies.
- His (God's) transcendental position is always unchanged. He is the eternal form of knowledge and bliss, and He executes His almighty will by His different energies.
Defeating the Illusion of a False World
Because the material world is temporary, some philosophers conclude it is completely false. However, Śrīla Prabhupāda establishes that because the material energy emanates directly from the Absolute Truth, it must be considered a factual reality, albeit an inferior one.
- Everything is born of the Supreme Brahman, from which everything emanates as different energies. None of these energies, therefore, should be considered false. The Mayavadis' differentiation between Brahman and maya is only due to ignorance.
- Vaisnava philosophers do not accept the different manifestations of the energy of the Supreme Lord as false; they accept them as nondifferent from the Supreme Personality of Godhead because they are a display of His diverse energies.
- The spirit soul (the living entity) and matter are different energies of the Supreme Lord, and since both the energies are products of the Supreme Eternal, or the Supreme Truth, they are factual, not false.
- To understand that Brahman, the Supreme, is conscious is not sufficient. One must know how He consciously acts through His different energies.
The Director of the Cosmos
The physical laws of nature appear to operate automatically, leading atheists to believe that nature is blind and independent. Śrīla Prabhupāda clarifies that the material energy is constantly directed by the Supreme Lord, who initiates its actions simply by His divine glance.
- The material nature full of physical laws is one of My different energies; therefore it's neither independent nor blind. Because I'm transcendentally all-powerful, simply by My glancing over material nature, the physical laws of nature work so wonderfully.
- The Supreme Personality of Godhead pushes the button of creation, and different energies create the material elements and various controllers of the physical elements, and their subsequent interactions follow the inconceivable plan of the Supreme Personality of Godhead.
- Narada Muni has explained that all paraphernalia of the cosmic universe is but an emanation from the Lord out of His different energies because the Lord has set in motion, by His inconceivable energy, the actions and reactions of the created manifestation.
- Although the Lord is silent in His abode, He is doing everything through His different energies - parasya saktir vividhaiva sruyate.
The Necessity of Divine Grace
Understanding the complex interactions of the Lord's multi-energies is beyond the capacity of mundane logic and ascending scientific research. Śrīla Prabhupāda emphasizes that true realization comes only through devotional service and the grace of a bona fide spiritual master.
- The conclusion is that a serious devotee must first approach a spiritual master who not only is well versed in the Vedic literatures but is also a great devotee with factual realization of the Lord and His different energies.
- Unless one is favored and especially endowed with grace, he cannot understand how the one Supreme Personality of Godhead acts through His different energies. The living entities are also the marginal energy of the Supreme Personality of Godhead.
- The Lord, being the Lord of intelligence in everyone (even in the nondevotee), favors His devotee with proper intelligence so that automatically the pure devotee is enlightened with the factual truth about the Lord and His different energies.
- By devotional service or by the most confidential knowledge, one can understand very easily how the different energies of the Lord are working.
Conclusion
A comprehensive study of the Vedic literatures completely resolves the philosophical paradox of how the Supreme Lord can be one, yet simultaneously manifest as the diverse, unlimited universe. As Śrīla Prabhupāda meticulously explains, the Absolute Truth possesses multi-energies—primarily categorized as the internal (spiritual), external (material), and marginal (the living entities) energies. Just as a fire remains situated in one place while distributing its heat and light everywhere, the Supreme Personality of Godhead remains eternally unchanged in His transcendental abode while diffusing His different energies to create the entire cosmic manifestation. This sublime principle defeats the Māyāvāda philosophy; because the energies emanate from the Supreme Eternal, the material world is not false, nor does the Lord lose His personal identity by transforming into matter. The physical laws of nature are not blind or independent; they are directed by the Lord, who simply glances over the material energy to set the entire universe in motion. Because the Lord and His energies are simultaneously one and different, seeing the Lord's hand in everything requires more than speculative intelligence. The true nature of God's different energies remains hidden to the atheists and impersonalists, but by the grace of a bona fide spiritual master and the execution of pure devotional service, the sincere soul is blessed from within to perfectly realize the dynamic, energetic expansions of the Absolute Truth.
