God's Destroying - The Primeval Cause of Cosmic Annihilation
In the material world, the concept of destruction is universally feared. We desperately try to preserve our bodies, our wealth, and our nations, viewing dissolution as the ultimate tragedy. However, the Vedic literatures provide a completely different perspective on the science of destruction. Śrīla Prabhupāda explains that the Supreme Personality of Godhead is not only the creator and maintainer of the universe, but also its ultimate destroyer. This destruction is never arbitrary; it is an essential mechanism of cosmic justice and divine mercy. By understanding how the Lord winds up the universal manifestation, how He appears as death to the atheists, and how He mercifully destroys the material attachments of His devotees, we can lose our fear of dissolution and take eternal shelter of the Absolute Truth.
The Primeval Cause of Dissolution
The opening aphorism of the Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam establishes that the Supreme Lord is the source from which everything emanates and into which everything ultimately merges. Śrīla Prabhupāda explains that just as a spider weaves and retracts its web, the Lord effortlessly manifests and destroys the cosmic creation.
- Srila Vyasadeva explains the Vedanta-sutra, in SB 1.1.1: I meditate upon Him (Lord Krsna), the transcendent reality, who is the primeval cause of all causes, from whom all manifested universes arise, in whom they dwell, and by whom they are destroyed.
- The whole creation is made by the Supreme Personality of Godhead in His form of Brahma, it is maintained by Him in the form of Visnu, and it is destroyed by Him in the form of Rudra, or Siva, all in due course.
- In the Mundaka Upanisad (1.1.7) it is stated, yathorna-nabhih srjate grhnate ca: "(The Lord creates and destroys the cosmic manifestation) as a spider creates a web and draws it back within itself."
- The Supreme Lord existed in the beginning, He exists after the creation and maintains everything, and after destruction everything merges in Him, as stated in Bhagavad-gita (9.7 prakrtim yanti mamikam). Thus the Supreme Lord is actually everything.
Destroying the Demons
When demonic forces rise to power and disrupt the peaceful execution of spiritual life, the Lord does not remain a passive observer. Śrīla Prabhupāda highlights that a primary mission of the Lord's incarnations is to descend, protect the pious, and actively destroy the miscreants.
- Lord Ramacandra exemplifies an incarnation of Godhead who descends for the mission of paritranaya sadhunam vinasaya ca duskrtam - protecting the devotees and destroying the miscreants.
- The world is full of two kinds of living beings, and the Lord's mission is always to protect the devatas and destroy the asuras, whenever there is such a need in the world, and to do good to both of them.
- His (God's) one signal is sufficient to destroy all our attempts. His inconceivable power, as displayed here, is so strong that the demon (Hiranyaksa), despite all his demoniac maneuvers, was killed by God when God desired, simply by one slap.
- Dear Lord, You never want the auspicious path to be destroyed, for You are the reservoir of all goodness. Just to benefit people in general, You destroy the evil element by Your mighty potency.
Appearing as All-Devouring Death
For those who refuse to acknowledge God during their lives, the Lord forces them to recognize Him at the end. Śrīla Prabhupāda explains that the Supreme Lord appears to the atheists as death, ruthlessly destroying all their false, accumulated material opulences.
- The Lord is so powerful that He destroys everything in the form of death. As Krsna says in Bhagavad-gita: "I am all-devouring death." The Lord is just like death to the atheists, for He takes away everything they accumulate in the material world.
- In Bhagavad-gita it is said that the Lord in the shape and form of death destroys all a person's possessions. Mrtyuh sarva-haras caham: "I am all-devouring death."
- My dear Lord, now I have complete experience concerning the worldly opulence, mystic power, longevity and other material pleasures enjoyed by all living entities, from Lord Brahma down to the ant. As powerful time, You destroy them all.
- The Lord's so-called blessings of economic development and sense gratification will be conclusively dissolved by destruction.
The Special Mercy of Material Ruin
Perhaps the most confidential aspect of the Lord's destructive power is how He applies it to His own devotees. Śrīla Prabhupāda reveals that the Lord sometimes shows a special favor to a sincere soul by deliberately destroying their material comforts to accelerate their spiritual surrender.
- The Lord, in order to show him (the pure devotee) a special favor, destroys his so-called economic development and material opulences.
- Persons who are too much addicted to the childish activities of economic development and sense gratification are sometimes especially favored by the Lord when He destroys their construction of these things.
- This kind of action may also be accepted as isa-vidhvam-sitasisam, whereby the Lord destroys one's material opulences but enriches one in spiritual understanding.
- Full knowledge of Brahman, Paramatma and Bhagavan is revealed to the pure devotees. The Lord says in Bhagavad-gita: Out of compassion for them, I, dwelling in their hearts, destroy with the shining lamp of knowledge the darkness born of ignorance.
Conclusion
A comprehensive understanding of the Absolute Truth requires accepting both the creative and destructive potencies of the Supreme Personality of Godhead. As Śrīla Prabhupāda clearly explains, the universe is not eternal; it is created by Lord Brahmā, maintained by Lord Viṣṇu, and ultimately destroyed by Lord Śiva in due course of time. This cosmic dissolution is entirely under the direction of the Supreme Lord, who withdraws the material energies back into His own body just as a spider retracts its web. On a historical scale, the Lord's destructive power is utilized to protect the cosmic order. As stated in the Bhagavad-gītā, He descends millennium after millennium with a vow to destroy the demonic miscreants (vināśāya ca duṣkṛtām) and protect the pious devotees. For atheists who stubbornly deny the existence of God, the Lord eventually appears before them as all-devouring death (mṛtyuḥ sarva-haraś cāham), forcefully destroying their physical bodies and all the illusory wealth they spent their lives accumulating. However, the most profound application of God's destroying potency is found in His intimate dealings with His devotees. Out of supreme compassion, the Lord sometimes acts as the ultimate surgeon, deliberately destroying a devotee's material opulence and economic development. By smashing these childish material attachments, the Lord destroys the darkness of ignorance within the heart, allowing the shining lamp of pure spiritual knowledge to burn brightly, and guiding the soul safely back home, back to Godhead.
