God's Dealings - The Intimate Exchanges of the Supreme Lord
In most religious traditions, God is worshiped exclusively as the supreme creator, judge, and provider. Consequently, the relationship between the Lord and the living entity is often dominated by awe and reverence. While this reverential posture is appropriate for a neophyte, the Vedic literatures reveal a much deeper, more intimate reality in the spiritual sky. The Supreme Personality of Godhead is the supreme enjoyer, and His primary business is to relish loving exchanges with His pure devotees. Śrīla Prabhupāda explains that these divine dealings—whether they involve friendship, parental affection, or conjugal love—are entirely transcendental. By understanding the simplicity, absolute nature, and deep confidentiality of God's dealings, we can elevate our consciousness from distant awe to spontaneous, pure love.
The Simplicity and Humanity of Divine Dealings
When the Lord descends to the material world, He often adopts a human-like persona to facilitate intimate exchanges with His devotees. Śrīla Prabhupāda explains that these simple, open dealings are not signs of material limitation, but expressions of the Lord's supreme affection.
- The Lord deals with His devotees exactly like a human being, but this does not mean that the Lord is one of the human beings, for this is the conclusion of nondevotees (avajananti mam mudha manusim tanum asritam).
- Although the dealings between the Lord and His devotee are always very simple and open, there is formality. All these things happen because of the connection between the Lord and the devotee.
- The Supreme Lord was also anxious, thinking that if He appeared as an ordinary child, she (Devaki) would not believe that Lord Visnu had appeared. Such are the dealings between devotees and the Lord.
- The dealings between a devotee and the Lord are very simple. The young brahmana said to the Lord - You know everything, but if You do not bear witness, You will be involved in sinful activities.
Beyond Reverential Awe
Worshiping the Lord with strict adherence to rules and regulations is highly recommended, but it limits the scope of intimacy. Śrīla Prabhupāda highlights how the Lord desires to transcend this formality, deliberately appearing as Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu to teach the world the path of spontaneous, personal dealings.
- By following scriptural injunctions one may enhance his appreciation for the glories of the Lord, but there is no chance for one to enter into personal dealings with Him.
- Giving too much attention to understanding the exalted glories of the Lord reduces the chance of one's entering into personal loving affairs with the Lord. To teach the principles of such loving dealings, the Lord decided to appear as Lord Caitanya.
- In the spiritual world the Supreme Personality of Godhead has all the dealings of love, displaying the symptoms called sattvika, sancari, vilapa, murccha and unmada. Thus when Lord Ramacandra was separated from Sita, all these spiritual symptoms were manifested.
- That is the beauty of the Lord's dealings with His devotees; sometimes the Lord gives more credit to His devotees than He takes for Himself.
The Absolute Nature of Transcendental Bliss
To mundane eyes, some of the Lord's dealings may appear ordinary or even troublesome. However, Śrīla Prabhupāda clarifies that because the Supreme Lord is absolute, every dealing He enacts—even those that appear cunning or distressing—is saturated with transcendental bliss.
- Since the Lord is absolute, there is no difference in the transcendental nature of each and every dealing of the Lord.
- This transcendental situation comprises His (God's) dealings with devotees engaged in transcendental loving service, as exhibited at Dvaraka and Vrndavana.
- When Krsna was playing in so many ways, sometimes it appeared that He caused distress to the gopis, but actually such dealings were full of transcendental bliss.
- When this cunning behavior of the Lord with the girls became known to the people in general, it did not create misunderstandings among them. Rather, they enjoyed happiness in these dealings.
Approaching the Most Confidential Pastimes
The peak of all divine dealings occurs in Vṛndāvana, specifically in the Lord's exchanges with the gopīs. Śrīla Prabhupāda strongly warns that these highly confidential dealings must be approached with caution and systematic study, lest they be misunderstood as material romance.
- These dealings (between Krsna and the gopis) are given in the Tenth Canto of Srimad-Bhagavatam, and this indicates that we have to understand Krsna as He is by first reading the preceding nine cantos.
- We have to learn from the proper person about Krsna's activities. We should not immediately try to understand Krsna's dealings with the gopis, for they are very confidential.
- As soon as the inhabitants of Vrndavana saw that Krsna was in the river Yamuna enveloped by the serpent Kaliya & that all the boys & cows were lamenting, they simply began to think of Krsna's friendship, smiling face, sweet words & His dealings with them.
- God is all-attractive. Otherwise how He can be God? God cannot be attractive for you and not for me. This is very accurate word. God has no name. That's a fact. But we coin His name according to His dealings. Just like we call God Yasoda-nandana.
Conclusion
A true understanding of the Absolute Truth requires us to recognize that God is not a sterile, emotionless force. As Śrīla Prabhupāda beautifully illustrates, the Supreme Personality of Godhead is the supreme person, capable of the most intricate, endearing, and intimate dealings with His devotees. While focusing on the exalted glories of the Lord creates awe and reverence, it simultaneously restricts the living entity from entering into deep, personal loving affairs. To demonstrate the unparalleled sweetness of these dealings, the Lord descended as Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu, teaching the world how to approach Him with spontaneous affection. In these transcendental exchanges, the Lord often sets aside His majestic supremacy, dealing with His devotees so simply and intimately that He acts exactly like a human being. The pinnacle of these dealings is witnessed in Vṛndāvana, where the Lord's interactions with His pure devotees are so absolute that even His seemingly cunning or distressing behaviors produce nothing but pure transcendental bliss. Yet, Śrīla Prabhupāda cautions that these highly confidential dealings—especially those with the gopīs in the Tenth Canto of Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam—must never be interpreted materially. To properly understand them, one must systematically study the preceding nine cantos under the guidance of a bona fide spiritual master. Ultimately, the Lord is so defined by these loving relationships that He is eternally known by the names derived from His dealings, such as Yaśodā-nandana, the beloved son of mother Yaśodā.
