God's Consciousness - Complete, Active, and Unlimited
Consciousness is the fundamental symptom of life. Without consciousness, the physical body is nothing more than a lump of dead matter. However, a major philosophical point of confusion arises when analyzing the difference between the consciousness of the ordinary living entity and the consciousness of the Supreme Personality of Godhead. Atheists deny supreme consciousness altogether, attributing creation to random chance, while impersonalists believe that individual consciousness merges into a stagnant, inactive spiritual void. Śrīla Prabhupāda systematically defeats these misconceptions by thoroughly explaining the dynamic, unlimited, and all-pervading nature of God's consciousness. By understanding how the Supreme Lord perceives and directs the universe, we can learn how to perfectly align our own limited awareness with the Absolute Truth.
Limited Versus Unlimited Consciousness
Both the individual soul (jīva) and the Supreme Lord are eternal, blissful, and conscious. However, Śrīla Prabhupāda draws a vital distinction regarding the jurisdiction of their awareness: the individual is confined to one body, while the Lord pervades everything.
- Both God and the living entity are fully conscious. As living entities, we are conscious of our bodily existence. Similarly, the Lord is conscious of the gigantic cosmic manifestation. This is confirmed in the Vedas.
- The difference (between the soul and the Supersoul) is that the individual soul is conscious within the limited jurisdiction of the body, whereas the Supersoul is conscious of all bodies.
- You are not conscious of my bodily pains and pleasure, I am not conscious of your bodily pains. But God is conscious of your consciousness and my consciousness and everything. That is the difference between God and you and me.
- The soul is existing, spreading its influence all over the body, just like the sun is existing, spreading the sunshine all over the universe. Similarly, God is existing, spreading His consciousness all over the universe, all over the creation.
The All-Knowing Paramātmā
The Supreme Lord does not merely watch the universe from a distance; He accompanies every single living entity. Śrīla Prabhupāda explains that as the Paramātmā (Supersoul) situated in the heart, God is intimately conscious of our deepest thoughts, desires, and entire karmic history.
- Because He (the Lord) lives in the heart of every living being, He is conscious of the psychic movements of the particular jivas. We should not forget this.
- The Supersoul, or Paramatma, however, being present everywhere and within everyone, is also conscious of everyone's existence. The theory that the soul and the Supersoul are one is not acceptable because it is not confirmed by authoritative Vedic literature.
- He (God) knows everything. In the Bhagavad-gita also He says that, "I know past, present, future everywhere." So consciousness is there. One is the supreme consciousness, and the other is this limited consciousness.
- The Lord is conscious of all of His previous appearances and disappearances, but a common living entity forgets everything about his past body as soon as he gets another body.
The Supreme Director of Creation
Modern science attempts to explain the wonders of the universe through blind physical laws. However, Śrīla Prabhupāda points out that laws require a lawmaker. The incredible symmetry and functionality of the material world are direct evidence of the Lord's active, supreme consciousness.
- Unless the Supreme Lord is conscious, the supreme source of all generation is conscious, wherefrom this consciousness can come.
- The supreme source is abhijna. He is not a stone or a void. How could He be? The creation itself is evidence of the consciousness of the Supreme. Everyone can appreciate the cosmic manifestation and how nicely it is working.
- The rose in the garden gradually takes its shape and color to become beautiful and sweet not by a blind physical law, although it appears like that. Behind that physical law is the direction of the complete consciousness of the Supreme Lord.
- I meditate upon that eternally effulgent Lord, who is directly and indirectly conscious of all manifestations and yet is fully independent.
Beyond Impersonal Realization
A significant philosophical error is the Māyāvāda concept that supreme consciousness is ultimately inactive and formless. Śrīla Prabhupāda clarifies that the absolute consciousness belongs to an eternal, highly active Supreme Person, and the goal of life is to actively harmonize with Him.
- Many verses can be quoted from the Upanisads and Vedas which prove that the Supreme Godhead is not impersonal. In the Katha Upanisad it is also said: He is the supreme eternally conscious person, who maintains all other living entities.
- Mayavada philosophy simply informs us of the consciousness of the Absolute Truth but does not give us information of how He acts with His consciousness. That is the defect of that philosophy.
- To understand that Brahman, the Supreme, is conscious is not sufficient. One must know how He consciously acts through His different energies.
- The individual soul's consciousness cannot act in superconsciousness. This superconsciousness can be achieved, however, by dovetailing individual consciousness with the consciousness of the Supreme. This process is called surrender or Krsna consciousness.
Conclusion
A comprehensive understanding of the Absolute Truth requires us to recognize the profound distinction between the individual jīva and the Supreme Personality of Godhead. As Śrīla Prabhupāda clearly explains, while we are conscious entities, our awareness is severely limited; we cannot even feel the bodily pains or pleasures of the person sitting next to us. In stark contrast, the Supreme Lord's consciousness is unlimited. Expanding as the Paramātmā within the heart of every single living being, He is instantly and perfectly conscious of everyone's psychological movements, past lives, and future destinies. Furthermore, God’s consciousness is not passive. Against the atheistic theory of blind physical laws, Śrīla Prabhupāda establishes that the Lord is abhijña (fully cognizant), actively directing the cosmic manifestation down to the unfolding of a rose's petals. This dynamic, active nature of God also defeats the Māyāvāda philosophy, which incorrectly assumes that the ultimate consciousness is a static, impersonal void. The Upaniṣads confirm that the Supreme is an eternally conscious Person who utilizes His energies to maintain the creation. Because our individual consciousness is minute, we can never artificially expand it to become God. The true perfection of human life is simply to dovetail our tiny, limited awareness with the unlimited, supreme consciousness of the Lord through the sublime process of Kṛṣṇa consciousness.
