God's Conducting - The Supreme Superintendent of the Cosmos
A fundamental symptom of material illusion is the false ego—the deep-seated belief that "I am the doer." We proudly point to the achievements of modern science, architecture, and governance, assuming we are the ultimate conductors of our own destiny. However, the Vedic literatures dismantle this misconception, revealing that not a single blade of grass moves without the sanction of the Supreme Personality of Godhead. Śrīla Prabhupāda expertly explains that God is the supreme conductor. Whether He is managing the colossal forces of material nature, directing the senses of an individual, or orchestrating His own sweet pastimes on earth, everything is conducted under His absolute superintendence. By understanding how the Lord conducts the universe, we can surrender our false pride and align ourselves with His supreme will.
The Conductor of the Cosmic Manifestation
To the untrained eye, the material universe appears to function automatically, driven by blind physical laws and the interaction of the three modes of nature. However, Śrīla Prabhupāda clarifies that material nature is simply an instrument; the actual conductor is the Supreme Lord.
- Creation, maintenance and annihilation are all conducted personally by the Supreme Personality of Godhead, and this is confirmed in Bhagavad-gita (mayadhyaksena prakrtih suyate sa-caracaram).
- By the interaction of the material modes of nature, creation, maintenance and also annihilation take place inevitably. But at the same time we should know that all is conducted under the superintendence of the Supreme Personality of Godhead.
- My dear Lord, You are the complete conductor of the material creation. You have created this cosmic manifestation and the three material qualities, and therefore You have created me, the planet earth, the resting place of all living entities.
- All the activities in both the spiritual and material world are certainly conducted by the orders of the Supreme Personality of Godhead through the agency of either the material or spiritual nature.
The Conductor of the Senses (Hṛṣīkeśa)
On an individual level, we believe we control our own bodies and actions. Yet, Śrīla Prabhupāda points out that the living entity is completely dependent. The Supreme Lord, residing in the heart as the Supersoul, is the actual conductor of the senses and the ultimate controller of all results.
- The Supreme Lord is called Hrsikesa; He is the only conductor of the senses. Unless empowered by His energy, our senses cannot act. In other words, He is the only seer, the only worker, the only listener, and the only active principle or supreme controller.
- A foolish person cannot understand that the Supersoul is sitting as a friend within and conducting his actions.
- Beginning from Brahma down to the ant, everyone is conducted by the Supersoul (isvarah sarva-bhutanam hrd-dese 'rjuna tisthati). But because of a particular person's advancement in spiritual consciousness, he is considered to be important.
- One who studies carefully, under the direction of a bona fide spiritual master, can understand the real knowledge that the Supreme Personality of Godhead is actually the conductor of all the activities of the individual soul, and the controller of their results as well.
Conducting the Destiny of the Living Entities
When the soul rebels against the Lord, it is placed under the jurisdiction of the external energy (māyā). Śrīla Prabhupāda uses a brilliant analogy to explain how the Lord, acting as the supreme conductor, guides the living entity through the miseries of the material world based on their desires.
- The living entities, who are part of You, have no cause for miseries like birth, death and old age, except when these living entities are conducted by Your external energy.
- The material world, conducted by the Supreme Lord's external energy, is called Devi-dhama and is a manifestation of one fourth of His energy.
- In a train there are first-class, second-class seats, and the conductors directs, "Here is your reserved seats, sir. Come here. Sit down." Similarly, the conductor is the Supreme Personality of Godhead. He is called Paramatma. He is giving you different types of bodies as you desire.
- The Supreme Lord is the reservoir of the twenty-five elements, and as the Supreme Being, the conductor of cause and effect, He causes their manifestation.
Conducting Divine Pastimes and Universal Affairs
While the conditioned souls are conducted by the stringent laws of karma, the Lord remains entirely transcendental. Śrīla Prabhupāda emphasizes that when the Lord descends, His pastimes and His governance of the world are conducted purely by His internal, spiritual energy.
- Any pastime conducted by the Supreme Personality of Godhead is an arrangement by yogamaya, not mahamaya.
- In His incarnation as Gaurasundara, Lord Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu, the Lord conducts His pastimes in three areas: Navadvipa, Jagannatha Puri (and South India) and Vraja-mandala (the area of Vrndavana-dhama).
- As the Supreme Lord, He can increase or decrease the duration of life of a living being. Thus the Lord conducted the Battle of Kuruksetra according to His own plan.
- Indeed, people still hanker for rama-rajya, a government conducted like that of Lord Ramacandra.
Conclusion
The philosophy of Kṛṣṇa consciousness provides the ultimate cure for the disease of false ego. As Śrīla Prabhupāda systematically establishes, the living entity is never the independent doer; the Supreme Personality of Godhead is the absolute conductor of everything. At the macrocosmic level, the creation, maintenance, and annihilation of the universe are not the result of blind scientific laws. Rather, as confirmed in the Bhagavad-gītā (mayādhyakṣeṇa prakṛtiḥ), these massive events are personally conducted under the Lord's flawless superintendence. At the microcosmic level, the Lord sits within the heart of every being—from the exalted Lord Brahmā down to the insignificant ant—as the Paramātmā. As Hṛṣīkeśa, the master of the senses, He is the only active principle. Śrīla Prabhupāda beautifully compares the Lord to a train conductor: just as a conductor directs a passenger to their reserved seat, the Paramātmā conducts the conditioned soul into a specific material body according to their karma and desires. Miseries only arise when the living entity chooses to be conducted by the Lord's external energy in Devī-dhāma. However, when the Supreme Lord descends into this world, His activities are never subjected to these material laws. Whether He is conducting the massive Battle of Kurukṣetra, ruling the perfect civic society of rāma-rājya, or dancing in ecstasy across Navadvīpa and Purī as Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu, His pastimes are entirely conducted by yogamāyā. To recognize the Lord as the supreme conductor of all energies is the dawn of true spiritual intelligence, allowing the soul to harmoniously engage in His eternal, loving service.
