God's Calling - The Supreme Lord's Invitation Back Home
In the material world, we are constantly being called by the demands of our senses, our families, and society. These persistent calls drag the living entity deeper into the illusions of temporary existence. However, the Vedic literatures explain that above all these mundane demands, there is a supreme, compassionate voice continuously inviting the soul to return to its original, eternal state. Śrīla Prabhupāda explains that the Supreme Personality of Godhead is not a passive, distant observer; He actively descends and makes specific arrangements to call the conditioned souls back home, back to Godhead. By understanding how the Lord issues this divine summons, we can learn to recognize His voice and prepare ourselves to respond.
Calling the Forgotten Souls
The primary reason the Supreme Lord descends into the material world is not simply to display His power, but to issue a profound invitation. Śrīla Prabhupāda emphasizes that God's overarching mission is to recall His lost, rebellious children back to the spiritual sky.
- The Lord descends to reclaim all of these fallen, conditioned souls to call them back to the sanatana eternal sky so that the sanatana living entities may regain their eternal sanatana positions in eternal association with the Lord.
- The Lord is very kind to the forgetful souls. He therefore comes Himself and leaves behind necessary instructions and also sends His good sons as representatives to call all the conditioned souls back to Godhead.
- Prahlada Maharaja expecting, "When the Lord will call me?" That is real mercy. You cannot call God, or Krsna, "Please come me and save me." Krsna is not your servant; He does not agree to be your servant. But when He's pleased, He says, He calls you.
- Prahlada Maharaja expected that the Lord, by His kindness, would call him again to the shelter of His lotus feet.
Tragedy as a Divine Summons
For a pure devotee, the call of the Lord does not always arrive in the form of a pleasant invitation; sometimes it comes disguised as a severe calamity. What mundane observers view as a tragic end is understood by advanced Vaiṣṇavas to be a special arrangement made by the Lord to rapidly call His devotee back home.
- The Supreme Lord is so kind to His pure devotees that in proper time He calls such devotees up to Him and thus creates an auspicious circumstance for the devotee.
- In the case of Maharaja Pariksit, the situation was different. Apparently the King was condemned to death by an inexperienced brahmana boy, but factually he was called by the Lord to return to Him.
- They were never captivated by the glare of the imperial throne they occupied, and they sought always the opportunity of being called by the Lord to associate with Him eternally. Maharaja Pariksit was the worthy grandson of Maharaja Yudhisthira.
Calling His Eternal Associates
The Lord's supreme authority is demonstrated by how quickly the universe responds to His call. When the Lord descends to execute His pastimes, He calls upon His confidential servants, demigods, and even His divine weapons, who all appear immediately to serve Him.
- The Lord and His eternal associates appeared on earth to help the administrative demigods in eradicating the burden of the world. He called for some of the confidential demigods to appear in the Yadu family and serve Him in His great mission.
- As soon as He saw the demon, Lord Balarama prepared to attack him. He first considered how He could smash the great demon to pieces. Lord Balarama then called for His plow and club, and they immediately appeared before Him.
- Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu called all His devotees together and, holding them by the hand, humbly informed them, "You are all more dear to Me than My life. I can give up My life, but to give you up is difficult for Me."
The Loving Response
When the Lord calls, the reaction of a pure soul is instantaneous and completely devoid of material calculation. Śrīla Prabhupāda beautifully describes how the residents of Vṛndāvana, specifically the cows, responded to Kṛṣṇa's call with an overwhelming surge of spontaneous love.
- When called by the Lord the cows were overwhelmed by joyous affection, just as the mother's breast overflows with milk when the child cries for it.
- Krsna Himself is like the newly arrived clouds. The gopis are like footbells on His feet, and when the cloud pours rain on the grains in the field, it appears that Krsna is nourishing the hearts of the gopis by calling down His pastime rain of mercy.
- The Lord calls such a rare devotee the best amongst the yogis.
Conclusion
A true understanding of the Supreme Personality of Godhead requires abandoning the arrogant attitude that God is a cosmic servant obliged to answer our demands. As Śrīla Prabhupāda clearly explains, we cannot cheaply order the Lord to come and save us. The perfection of spiritual life is to adopt the mood of Prahlāda Mahārāja, patiently and humbly waiting for the Lord to call us. Because the Lord is supremely compassionate to the forgetful souls, He constantly issues this divine summons by personally descending to the material world, leaving behind the Vedic instructions, or sending His pure representatives. For an advanced devotee, this call is the ultimate goal of existence. Consequently, pure devotees like the Pāṇḍavas were never captivated by their royal opulence; they simply waited for the opportunity to be called back by the Lord. This profound understanding allows the pure devotee to see past the illusion of material misfortune. When Mahārāja Parīkṣit was cursed to die in seven days, he did not lament; he recognized that the Supreme Lord had created a perfectly auspicious circumstance to call him back to the sanātana eternal sky. By faithfully executing devotional service and rejecting the distracting calls of the material energy, the conditioned soul prepares their heart so that, when the supreme call finally comes, they can respond with the same joyous, overflowing affection as the cows of Vṛndāvana.
