God's Begetting - The Omnipotent Father of Creation
In the material world, reproduction is a biological necessity bound by strict physical laws. For a child to be born, there must be a physical union between a mother and a father. However, when the Vedic literatures describe the Supreme Personality of Godhead as the original father, they clarify that His method of begetting children is entirely transcendental. Śrīla Prabhupāda explains that the Lord is completely self-sufficient and omnipotent; He does not rely on material mechanics to populate the universes. By understanding how the Supreme Lord begets the first created being, Lord Brahmā, and how He impregnates the material nature, we can appreciate the absolute, inconceivable power of the supreme father.
The Birth of Lord Brahmā
The most striking example of the Lord's absolute independence in begetting children is the birth of Lord Brahmā. As Garbhodakaśāyī Viṣṇu lay on the causal waters, He generated Brahmā directly from a lotus flower that sprouted from His navel.
- Being self-sufficient, the Lord begot Brahma from His own navel.
- The Personality of Godhead in His Garbhodakasayi Visnu feature begets Brahma, the first created person in the material world, from His navel lotus stem and not in the womb of the goddess of fortune, who is eternally engaged in His service.
- Laksmiji was present near Narayana, engaged in the service of the Lord, but still, without contact with Laksmiji, Narayana begot Brahma. That is the omnipotency of the Lord.
- When Garbhodakasayi Visnu begot Lord Brahma from His navel, He did not take any help from Laksmi, who was just sitting by Him and massaging His lotus feet.
The Omnipotency of the Lord's Body
How is it possible to beget a child from a navel? Śrīla Prabhupāda explains that unlike a material body, every part of the Supreme Lord's spiritual body (sac-cid-ānanda-vigraha) possesses the functions of all other parts.
- Narayana is all-powerful, and therefore He can beget a child from His navel. Every part of His body has full potency, as explained in the Brahma-samhita, angani yasya sakalendriya-vrttimanti.
- Brahma is known as atma-bhu because he was begotten directly from the father, Narayana, or Visnu, without the contact of mother Laksmiji.
- One who is detached from the lotus feet of the Supreme Personality of Godhead, from whose abdomen a lotus is grown for begetting Brahma, if one is bereft of attachment to the Supreme Lord, then his qualification of vipra is not accepted, or not very fruitful.
Impregnating Material Nature
Beyond the birth of Brahmā, the Lord is the father of all living entities within the material universe. To impregnate the vast womb of material nature (prakṛti), the Lord does not require any physical contact; He simply uses His glancing potency.
- The Lord as Garbhodakasayi Visnu or Hiranyagarbha Supersoul enters into each and every universe and causes it to be animated by begetting the living entities within the womb of the material nature, as confirmed in the Bhagavad-gita.
- The sruti mantras say that God impregnates material nature with the seeds of living beings simply by casting His glance at her. He does not need any other kind of intercourse with mother nature to beget the living beings in her womb and become their father.
- Lord Siva is neither the Supreme Personality of Godhead nor a living entity. He is the form through which the Supreme Lord works to beget living entities within this material world.
- The word svanga-visesabhasa-rupe, indicating the form by which the Lord begets living entities in the material world, is explained herein. He is Lord Siva.
The Uncaused Cause
While every entity in the universe traces their lineage back to a father, the chain stops at the Supreme Personality of Godhead. He is the original seed-giving father (ahaṁ bīja-pradaḥ pitā) who begot everyone, but who is Himself completely independent.
- The supreme father has no other father. Every one of the living entities of all grades, up to Brahma, the original creature of the universe, is begotten by a father, but He, the Lord, has no father.
- The God has begotten many sons. The only worthy son was Jesus Christ, you can interpret it like that, because he was giving service to the Lord, to the father. He brought the message of father.
- The Lord of the ritualistic performance of yajna later married Daksina, who was anxious to have the Personality of Godhead as her husband, and in this wife the Lord was also very much pleased to beget twelve children.
Conclusion
A true understanding of the Supreme Personality of Godhead requires abandoning our limited, material frameworks. Śrīla Prabhupāda meticulously explains that when the Vedic literatures describe God as the supreme father, it is not merely a metaphor, nor is it a biological process. The Lord's ability to beget children is a display of His absolute omnipotence. Because every part of His spiritual body can perform the function of any other part, He effortlessly begot Lord Brahmā (ātma-bhū) directly from His navel. He did this entirely independent of His eternal consort, the goddess of fortune, proving that He requires no external help to create. Furthermore, to populate the vast material universes, the Lord simply casts His glance over the material energy, using the agency of Lord Śiva to impregnate nature with the countless seeds of the conditioned souls. By understanding that the Lord is the uncaused cause—the original father who begets everyone but has no father Himself—a sane human being will naturally conclude that the perfection of life is to become a "worthy son," dedicating one's energy to serving the supreme father and spreading His divine message.
