God's Bed - The Cosmic Resting Place of Ananta Śeṣa
For the conditioned soul in the material world, sleep is a biological necessity. Because the physical body becomes exhausted by the daily struggle for existence, the living entity is forced to lose consciousness and rest. However, when the Supreme Personality of Godhead takes rest, it is an entirely transcendental affair. Śrīla Prabhupāda explains that the Lord's sleep is a conscious, spiritual pastime (yoga-nidrā) performed upon a magnificent cosmic bed. By understanding the nature of the Lord's resting place—from the grand serpent bed of Ananta Śeṣa supporting the universe, to the intimate flower beds prepared by His loving devotees in the temple—we can glimpse the absolute, blissful nature of the Supreme Lord.
The Cosmic Bed of Ananta Śeṣa
Before the universe is populated, the Supreme Lord creates a massive, watery expanse and lies down upon a divine bed to initiate the process of creation. This bed is not made of material elements; it is a gigantic, multi-hooded serpent known as Śeṣa Nāga.
- Ananta-sayana sleeps on the bed of Sesa Naga, who has a form like a serpent but is identical with the Lord. Because He sleeps on a serpent bed, the Lord is also known as Naga-sayana.
- With the perspiration produced from His own body, the Lord filled half the universe with water. He then lay down on that water, on the bed of Lord Sesa.
- The Ksirodakasayi Visnu has His own planet on the northern top of the universe, and there is a great ocean of milk where the Lord resides on the bed of the Ananta incarnation of Baladeva.
- O Mukunda, my Lord! Please let me become a constant reciter of Your names, addressing You as Natha, the Supreme Lord, Jagan-nivasa, the resort of the cosmos, and Naga-sayana, the Lord who lies down on the serpent bed.
The Mystic Slumber of Creation
The Lord's rest upon this serpent bed is not a state of ignorance or unconsciousness. It is from this "mystic slumber" that the entire cosmic manifestation is generated, maintained, and eventually destroyed.
- Before Brahma took up the task of creation, he found the Lord sleeping on the serpent bed in the waves of the water of devastation. Therefore, sleeping exists in the internal potency of the Lord, and this is not denied by pure devotees of the Lord.
- This creation takes place by the glance of the Lord from His bedstead of mystic slumber. And thus all the universes and the lord of the universe, Brahma, are again and again manifested and annihilated.
- You awaken from the bed of Sesa, Ananta, and from Your navel a small transcendental seed is generated. It is from this seed that the lotus flower of the gigantic universe is manifested, exactly as a banyan tree grows from a small seed.
- All the planets of the materialistic persons, including all the heavenly planets, such as the moon, are vanquished when the Supreme Personality of Godhead, Hari, goes to His bed of serpents, which is known as Ananta Sesa.
Intimate Loving Service
While the puruṣa-avatāras rest upon the cosmic serpents, the Supreme Lord in His original, personal features (like Kṛṣṇa and Rāma) enjoys taking rest upon beautiful beds prepared by His most intimate devotees. Preparing the Lord's bed is a highly elevated form of transcendental loving service.
- She cooks nice foods for Him, fans Him while He eats, smoothes sandalwood pulp on His face and sets His bed and sitting places in the right order.
- Putting flower garlands on His neck, dressing His hair, getting Him to lie down on the bed and assisting Him in taking His bath. Thus they served always in every respect, especially when Krsna was eating.
- Early the following morning, Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu went to see Lord Jagannatha in the temple, and He saw the Lord rise from His bed.
- One day in the house of Srivasa Thakura, Lord Caitanya Mahaprabhu sat down on the bed of Visnu, and all the devotees worshiped Him with the Vedic mantras of the Purusa-sukta, beginning with sahasra-sirsa purusah sahasraksah sahasra-pat.
Putting the Deity to Rest
The pastimes of the spiritual world are practically replicated in the temple through the process of arcana (Deity worship). Śrīla Prabhupāda gives strict instructions on how devotees must personally assist the Deity in taking rest, utilizing beautifully decorated beds and specific mantras.
- The Deity should be placed in bed with Srimati Radharani, and this should be indicated by bringing the wooden slippers from the altar to the bedside.
- One should take the remnants of the Lord's food. One should sit before the Lord and think that he is massaging the Lord's legs. One should decorate the Lord's bed with flowers before the Lord takes His rest.
- One should offer one's hand to the Lord. One should take the Deity to His bed. One should wash the feet of the Lord and then sit Him on the bed. One should place the Lord on the bed and then massage His feet.
- This mantra should be chanted: agaccha sayana-sthanam priyabhih saha kesava. "O Kesava, kindly come to Your bed along with Srimati Radharani."
Conclusion
A comprehensive understanding of the Supreme Personality of Godhead reveals that He is never an inactive, formless void, even when He is resting. Śrīla Prabhupāda meticulously explains that sleep is not a defect or a sign of exhaustion for the Supreme Lord; it is a manifestation of His internal spiritual potency. On a universal scale, the Lord expands as Garbhodakaśāyī Viṣṇu and Kṣīrodakaśāyī Viṣṇu, peacefully resting upon the magnificent serpent bed of Śeṣa Nāga. Because Ananta Śeṣa is an expansion of Lord Baladeva, the Lord's bed is absolutely non-different from the Lord Himself. From this majestic bedstead of mystic slumber, the Lord simply glances over the material energy to trigger the creation of unlimited universes, and when He returns to His serpent bed at the end of the millennium, the entire cosmos is dissolved. Yet, the most endearing aspect of the Lord's resting pastimes occurs in His intimate interactions with His devotees. In the spiritual world and in temples across the globe, pure devotees eagerly decorate the Lord's bed with fragrant flowers, gently massage His lotus feet, and lovingly chant mantras inviting Him to take rest. By faithfully engaging in this process of arcana, the conditioned soul transcends the exhaustion of material existence and awakens to the eternal, blissful reality of serving the Supreme Lord.
