God's Beauty - The Supreme Enchantment of the Absolute Truth
In the material world, everyone is captivated by beauty. We chase after beautiful people, beautiful landscapes, and beautiful art, hoping to find lasting satisfaction. Yet, material beauty is notoriously temporary and ultimately frustrating. Śrīla Prabhupāda explains that our intrinsic desire to appreciate beauty is not flawed; it is simply misdirected. The origin of all beauty is the Supreme Personality of Godhead. Because He is the supreme energetic source, His beauty is absolute, eternal, and perfectly fulfilling. By understanding the transcendental nature of God's beauty, we can elevate our vision from the flickering shadows of the material world to the eternal, enchanting reality of the spiritual sky.
The Definition of Supreme Beauty
To be accepted as the Supreme Being, one must possess all opulences in infinite quantities. Śrīla Prabhupāda repeatedly emphasizes that beauty is one of the six primary opulences that define the Absolute Truth.
- Supreme Being means everything supreme. In richness He is supreme. In bodily strength He is supreme. His knowledge is supreme. In beauty He is supreme. In renunciation He is supreme. That is the description, definition of God.
- To become God is not easy thing. There are some qualification, that He must be the richest, the most powerful, the most famous, He must be the most learned, He must be the most beautiful, and He must be the most renounced. This is the definition of God.
- He is the source of everyone's opulence, and no one can equal Him in opulence. Being full of all opulences, namely wealth, fame, strength, beauty, knowledge and renunciation, certainly He is the Supreme Person.
- The Advaitan wrongly thinks that he is absolutely one with God, that he himself is God. That is wrong. How can you become God? God is sad-aisvarya-purnam, full in six opulences: all power, all wealth, all beauty, all fame, all knowledge, and renunciation.
Unprecedented and Incomparable
The Lord's beauty cannot be adequately compared to anything in the material creation. Śrīla Prabhupāda notes that while poets try to compare the Lord's face to a lotus flower, the Lord's beauty actually defies and defeats the most beautiful things in nature.
- A lotus flower on the water is very beautiful when surrounded by humming bees and fish. The Lord's face is self-sufficient and complete. His beauty defies the natural beauty of a lotus.
- The beauty of the goddess of fortune is secondary in the presence of the Lord. In the words of Vaisnava poets, it is said that the Lord's beauty is so enchanting that it defeats hundreds of thousands of Cupids. He is therefore called Madana-mohana.
- In Srimad-Bhagavatam it is confirmed that although Krsna, the son of Devaki, is the last word in superexcellence and beauty, when He is amongst the gopis it appears that He is a sublime jewel set amongst divine golden craftsmanship.
- It is not that the goddess of fortune, being female, is the most beautiful. The Lord is so beautiful that He can excel any beautiful goddess of fortune by assuming a female form.
Attracting the Liberated Souls
Mundane beauty attracts people who are driven by the mode of passion. However, the transcendental beauty of the Supreme Lord is so pure that it captivates even those great sages who have already conquered their senses and achieved liberation.
- Even though they were in the liberated state, instead of remaining impersonalists they were attracted by the beauty of the Lord and became devotees.
- Great impersonalists like Sukadeva Gosvami and the four Kumaras were attracted by the beauty of the Deities in the temple, by the decorations and by the aroma of tulasi offered to the Lord, and they became devotees.
- Although the Supreme Personality of Godhead in His eternal form is beautiful and pleasing to the heart of the devotee, He does not attract impersonalists, who want to meditate on His impersonal aspect. Such impersonal meditation is simply fruitless labor.
- The details of the bodily features of the Lord especially indicate the Personality of Godhead. Impersonalists cannot appreciate the beautiful body of the Lord, which is described in these prayers by Lord Siva.
Enhancing His Ornaments
In the material world, people wear jewelry to make themselves look more attractive. The Supreme Lord, however, flips this paradigm entirely. Because His body is absolute beauty, He actually beautifies the ornaments He wears.
- As far as Krsna's ornaments are concerned, when they decorate His body it appears that they do not beautify Him, but the ornaments themselves become beautiful simply by being on His body.
- The beauty of the neck of the Lord enhances the beauty of the Kaustubha gem rather than vice versa.
- The beauty of the neck of the Lord enhances the beauty of the Kaustubha gem rather than vice versa. The gem itself becomes more beautiful because it is situated on the neck of the Lord.
- The curling hair on the shoulders of a lion always appears very, very beautiful. Similarly, the shoulders of the Lord were just like a lion's, and the necklace and garlands, along with the Kaustubha pearl necklace, combined to excel the beauty of a lion.
The Antidote to Material Lust
True spiritual advancement requires detachment from material desires. Śrīla Prabhupāda explains that the easiest way to conquer material lust is not through artificial suppression, but by replacing it with a higher taste: the profound satisfaction of gazing upon the beauty of the Lord.
- Devotional service is actual liberation. When one is attracted by the beauty of the Supreme Personality of Godhead and his mind is always engaged at the Lord's lotus feet, he is no longer interested in subjects that do not help him in self-realization.
- If the yogi is able to place the beautiful face of the Lord in the core of his heart, he will be completely satisfied. In other words, when one is absorbed in seeing the beauty of the Lord within himself, the material attraction can no longer disturb him.
- The influence of devotional service is such that when a person engages in it, he gives up all material desires and becomes fully attached to Krsna, being inspired by the transcendental qualities of the Lord. Such is the beauty of the Lord in the eyes of His devotee.
- As far as the eyes are concerned, they should not be allowed to see anything but Krsna. That will control the eyes. Similarly, the ears should be engaged in hearing about Krsna and the nose in smelling the flowers offered to Krsna.
Revealed Only by Devotion
God's beauty cannot be purchased or studied through academic research; it is a spiritual revelation. Śrīla Prabhupāda emphasizes that the Lord's enchanting beauty is only visible to those who have dedicated their lives to Him with genuine love and devotion.
- This beauty of the Supreme Lord can be seen by devotees who are in love with Him, devotees whose eyes are anointed with love of Godhead (premanjana-cchurita-bhakti-vilocanena).
- Those who are attached to the Supreme Personality of Godhead in love always see the Lord's lotus eyes and lotus feet, whereas others cannot see the Lord's beauty and are therefore classified as anadrta-yusmad-anghrayah, or neglectful of the Lord's personal form.
- The sense of sight, when engaged in seeing the beauty of the Lord, is perfected; the power to hear, when engaged in hearing the glories of the Lord, is perfected; the power to taste, when one enjoys by eating prasada, is perfected.
- Only by penance can one appreciate the beauty and opulence of the Lord, and when one is acquainted with that beauty and opulence, he is no longer attracted by any other. This is confirmed in Bhagavad-gita.
Conclusion
A deep philosophical analysis of the Absolute Truth reveals that the Supreme Personality of Godhead is not a formless void, but the most beautiful, enchanting person in existence. Śrīla Prabhupāda systematically explains that because the Lord possesses all six opulences in full, His beauty is supreme, unlimited, and utterly unprecedented. It is a beauty that defeats the delicate charm of Cupid, surpasses the elegance of the goddess of fortune, and miraculously beautifies the very jewelry that adorns His transcendental body. Because this beauty is purely spiritual (sac-cid-ānanda-vigraha), it possesses a magnetic power that captivates not only ordinary living entities but also the highest, most detached liberated sages, like Śukadeva Gosvāmī. This explains the supreme strategy of the Lord's descent: He displays His enchanting face, His charming smile, and His beautiful pastimes specifically to cure the conditioned souls of their miserable infatuation with temporary, material beauty. When a sincere seeker engages their eyes in viewing the beautiful form of the Deity and their mind in contemplating His lotus feet, their material lust is completely vanquished by this higher taste. Ultimately, the unfathomable beauty of Kṛṣṇa is a deeply guarded secret; it cannot be perceived by blunt senses or academic speculation, but is revealed only to the pure devotee whose eyes are anointed with the salve of unalloyed love.
