God's Authority - Surrendering to the Absolute Truth
The foundation of material existence is the living entity's desire to act independently as the supreme enjoyer and controller. Consequently, the material world is filled with endless friction as individuals, nations, and empires clash over supremacy. However, the Vedic literatures explain that true peace and spiritual liberation can only be achieved when we abandon this false ego and recognize the actual proprietor of all existence. Śrīla Prabhupāda systematically establishes that accepting the supreme authority of the Personality of Godhead is the very definition of religion and sanity. By examining the contrasting mentalities of the devotees and the demons, we learn that defying God's authority always leads to destruction, while humble surrender opens the door to the eternal, spiritual sky.
The Devotees and the Demons
According to Vedic understanding, humanity is not divided by race, nationality, or wealth, but by consciousness. Śrīla Prabhupāda explains that the fundamental distinction between a godly person (deva) and a demon (asura) rests entirely on their acceptance or rejection of God's authority.
- The conditioned life of a living being is caused by his revolting against the Lord. There are men called deva, or godly living beings, and there are men called asuras, or demons, who are against the authority of the Supreme Lord.
- The devotees of the Supreme Lord are called devas because they also become like God, whereas those who defy the authority of the Supreme are called asuras or demons. These two classes are always found in human society.
- There are two classes of men, the demons and the demigods. The demigods are fully aware of the Supreme Lord's position, and therefore they are obedient to Him, but even if demons know about the supremacy of the Lord they purposely defy His authority.
- Asadhu, or demon, means persons who deny the authority of God. They are called demons.
The Futility of Defiance
Throughout history, powerful materialists have attempted to usurp the position of the Supreme Lord. Whether they are ancient kings like Rāvaṇa or modern atheistic scientists, Śrīla Prabhupāda warns that their rebellion is always met with absolute defeat.
- Atheists like Ravana and Hiranyakasipu had to undergo severe penances before they could flout the authority of the Lord, but ultimately they were so helpless that they could not save themselves when the Lord appeared before them as cruel death.
- Any nation, any empire, any man, as soon as one begins to defy the authority of the Supreme Lord, like Ravana, he'll be finished. Sooner or later, he's going to be finished.
- They do not admit, especially the so-called scientist rascals and atheist philosophers, politicians. They do not accept the authority of God. They think they will be able to manage things in their own way.
- Demonic men, who have no relationship with God, gradually become puffed up by material acquisitions and begin to challenge the authority of the Supreme Lord and torture those who are devotees of the Lord.
Receiving Authorized Knowledge
To accept the authority of God, one must know who God is. Śrīla Prabhupāda strictly advises against mental speculation, emphasizing that perfect knowledge must descend through the authorized channel of the disciplic succession.
- We have to know the Supreme Personality of Godhead through authority, not by speculation. Speculation is no use.
- Spiritual master is servant authority, and God is the master authority. Therefore sevya bhagavan, seva bhagavan.
- Sri Vyasadeva is the authorized incarnation of Narayana, the Personality of Godhead. Therefore, there is no question as to his authority. He is the author of all other Vedic literatures, yet he recommends the study of Srimad-Bhagavatam above all others.
- This Krsna consciousness movement means we are presenting the Bhagavad-gita as it is. That's all. We have no difficulty because Krsna is accepted as authority, the Supreme Personality of Godhead, by all the acaryas; not only formerly, like Vyasadeva, Narada, Asita, Devala, many, many big, big stalwart.
The True Meaning of Religion
Real religion transcends bodily designations like "Hindu," "Christian," or "Muslim." Śrīla Prabhupāda distills the essence of all religious paths into one simple, universal principle: unreserved surrender to the supreme authority.
- What is the method of religion? To accept the authority of God. That is the primary principle of every religion, may be Christian religion or Hindu religion or Muhammadan religion. It doesn't matter.
- In every country and in every sect of religion it appears that the women are more interested than the men. This simplicity of acceptance of the Lord's authority is more effective than showy insincere religious fervor.
- One cannot challenge the authority of the Supreme Personality of Godhead in any circumstance. It is better to surrender unto Him and take His protection at all times.
- Those really learned leaders of society like Madhvacarya, Ramanujacarya, Sri Caitanya and many others, who are faithful philosophers, politicians, educators, scientists, etc., surrender to the lotus feet of the God, the all-powerful authority.
Conclusion
The supreme authority of the Personality of Godhead is the immovable bedrock of all spiritual and cosmic law. Śrīla Prabhupāda rigorously establishes that the living entity's suffering in the material world is born exclusively from their foolish revolt against this divine authority. This rebellion is the defining characteristic of the asuras (demons). Whether it is Hiraṇyakaśipu in ancient times or puffed-up scientists and politicians in the modern era, those who proudly flout God's authority are ultimately rendered completely helpless when He appears before them as inevitable death. Conversely, the devas (devotees) recognize their subordinate position and peacefully accept the Lord's supremacy. To practically accept God's authority, one must abandon the futile path of mental speculation and submissively hear from the "servant authority"—the bona fide spiritual master and the authorized Vedic literatures compiled by Śrīla Vyāsadeva. Ultimately, the true method of religion has nothing to do with sectarian labels; it simply means recognizing our constitutional position as eternal servants and unconditionally surrendering to the supreme authority, Kṛṣṇa. By doing so, the conditioned soul prepares themselves to escape the cycle of birth and death and return home, back to Godhead.
