God's Assurance - The Infallible Promises of the Supreme Lord
In the material world, promises are routinely broken. Politicians fail to deliver on their manifestos, businesses default on contracts, and even the most well-meaning friends are often thwarted by circumstances beyond their control. Therefore, the conditioned soul lives in a constant state of anxiety, unable to find absolute security. Śrīla Prabhupāda explains that true fearlessness can only be achieved by accepting the assurance of the Supreme Personality of Godhead. Because the Lord is the supreme controller of all energies, His word of honor is infallible. By understanding the specific assurances God has given to His devotees throughout the Vedic literatures, a sincere spiritual practitioner can completely banish all material anxiety.
The Infallible Word of Honor
The Supreme Lord is the Absolute Truth; therefore, His promises are absolute. Śrīla Prabhupāda emphasizes that once the Lord gives His word, no material force, no matter how powerful, can prevent its execution.
- The Lord never deviates from His word of honor. When He gives assurance for protection, the promise is executed in all circumstances.
- The Lord has confirmed this statement in the Bhagavad-gita by assuring Arjuna: You may declare to the world, My devotee shall never be vanquished.
- The Lord assures herein that He is ready to give protection to His devotee even if there is need to cut off part of His own body.
- Devotees should stick to their principles as sincere servants of the Lord and rest assured that the demoniac activities directed against them will not be able to stop their devotional service.
Assurance of Protection and Victory
When a soul surrenders to Kṛṣṇa, they are no longer under the jurisdiction of the material energy. The Lord personally assumes responsibility for their welfare, assuring them of victory over both external enemies and internal material desires.
- In the Bhagavad-gita the Lord states that He wants every soul to surrender unto Him only, and He assures everyone that if one does so He will give protection from the reactions of all sins.
- All good counsel was available to Arjuna in the matter of executing the battle of Kuruksetra. In such auspicious conditions, arranged by the Lord for His eternal devotee, lay the signs of assured victory.
- Because the Lord was present on the Battlefield of Kuruksetra, it became a dharma-ksetra, a place of pilgrimage. Therefore the Pandavas, who were extremely religious, were assured of victory.
- Owing to the presence of the Supreme Personality of Godhead, Aditi was fully assured that the troublesome condition created for her by the demons would now be ended.
Assuring the Great Devotees
Throughout the Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam, we see the Lord personally appearing to pacify and assure His pure devotees. Whether they are concerned about their past mistakes or their future spiritual standing, the Lord removes all their doubts.
- The Lord assured Dhruva Maharaja that Dhruva would not be bereft of the Lord's love. He encouraged Dhruva not to be worried that he childishly had material desires and at the same time had the pure aspiration to be a great devotee.
- This program of constant remembrance can be disturbed by many things, but Dhruva Maharaja's life would be so pure, as assured by the Lord Himself, that Dhruva would never forget Him.
- The Lord assured Bali Maharaja of all protection, and finally the Lord assured him of protection from the effects of bad association with the demons.
- The Supreme Personality of Godhead assured Bali Maharaja that he would always remain under the Lord's protection.
The Ultimate Assurance: Returning to Godhead
The most significant promise the Lord makes is regarding the ultimate destination of the soul. While the demigods can only offer temporary, exhaustible results within the material world, the Supreme Lord assures His devotees of eternal, immortal life.
- The human life is meant for achieving this end. The Lord has assured us in the Bhagavad-gita many times that going back to Godhead, His eternal abode, is the highest achievement.
- In the Bhagavad-gita the Lord also assures that whoever may go to His abode of immortality shall never return to this mortal land of threefold miseries.
- If one returns to the Supreme Personality of Godhead, one need not reenter the limits of time. Therefore, devotees who have taken shelter of the lotus feet of the Supreme Lord can sleep very peacefully with this assurance from the Supreme Personality of Godhead.
- The worshipers of the demigods are not very intelligent persons because they derive only temporary, exhaustible results. Their endeavors are those of less intelligent men. On the other hand, the Lord assures that His devotee has no fear of falling.
Conclusion
Anxiety is the defining characteristic of material existence, born from the constant threat of loss and the unreliability of material shelter. Śrīla Prabhupāda meticulously establishes that the only logical cure for this existential fear is to accept the absolute assurance of the Supreme Personality of Godhead. Because the Lord is the infallible supreme controller, His promise to protect His devotees is executed under all circumstances, transcending all material impediments. He assured Arjuna of victory on the battlefield, He assured Bali Mahārāja of protection from demonic association, and He assured Dhruva Mahārāja that his pure devotion would never be compromised by past childish desires. Most importantly, the Lord explicitly assures all of humanity in the Bhagavad-gītā that if they simply surrender unto Him, He will personally absolve them of all sinful reactions and grant them entry into His eternal, spiritual abode, from which no one ever falls down. By anchoring their faith in these divine assurances, pure devotees can execute their spiritual duties with absolute confidence and sleep peacefully, knowing their ultimate victory is guaranteed by the Supreme Lord Himself.
