God's Anxiety - The Supreme Compassion for the Fallen Souls
When we think of anxiety, we typically associate it with fear, incompleteness, or the struggle for material survival. Because the Supreme Personality of Godhead is the master of all creation and possesses all opulences in full, it may seem contradictory to suggest that He experiences anxiety. However, Śrīla Prabhupāda explains that while the Lord is entirely free from mundane worry, He exhibits a beautiful, transcendental anxiety. This divine anxiety is not rooted in a lack of personal fulfillment, but in an overwhelming, causeless compassion for the suffering of the conditioned souls and a deep, eager love for His pure devotees.
Free from Material Anxiety
Material anxiety is the byproduct of seeking pleasure from temporary, external sources. Śrīla Prabhupāda establishes that because the Supreme Lord is completely self-sufficient and eternally blissful, He is entirely devoid of such worldly distress.
- The Lord does not need to search for external enjoyment, because He is self-sufficient. He has no anxiety. One who has to seek pleasure from other sources is always full of anxiety.
- This creation emanates from Bhagavan, the Supreme Lord, who is without anxiety. Krsna very pleasantly associates with His consort Srimati Radharani and enjoys playing His flute.
- If God is anxious, what kind of God is He? Even Lord Brahma and other demigods are anxious. Lord Brahma is engaged in meditation, Lord Siva dances to annihilate the universe, the goddess Kali is engaged in killing with her sword, and so forth.
- It is due to God's grace that you are eating daily. That is a fact. Either you say, "God give us our daily bread," or you don't say, God is anxious to supply you bread. He is so kind because you are His son.
Anxious for the Fallen Souls
Despite His own supreme satisfaction, the Lord's heart aches for the suffering living entities who have forgotten Him. Śrīla Prabhupāda reveals that the Lord's greatest anxiety is figuring out how to bring His lost parts and parcels back to the spiritual world.
- The Supreme Lord descends out of compassion because He is more anxious to have us return home, back to Godhead, than we are to go.
- He, however, is always anxious to get the fallen souls back home, back to Godhead, and for this He has given so many chances to the conditioned souls via the authoritative scriptures, His representatives, and personal incarnations also.
- The Supreme Lord is more anxious to give us education and enlightenment than we are to receive them. He gives us His literature, His devotees and the parampara system, but it is up to us to take advantage of these.
- The Lord, being very kind to fallen souls, is always anxious to get the living entity out of the ocean of nescience.
Relieving the Lord's Compassionate Anxiety
Because the Lord is distressed by the ignorance of the material world, the highest duty of a pure devotee is to alleviate that divine anxiety. Śrīla Prabhupāda explains that preaching the message of Kṛṣṇa consciousness is the most intimate service one can render to console the Supreme Lord.
- Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu was always anxious to deliver the fallen souls because their fallen condition gave Him great unhappiness. That is the platform on which one can propagate the mission of Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu.
- The Lord is very much anxious to get back His parts and parcels, as stated in the Bhagavad-gita. No one is more dear than the one who takes the task of reclaiming the fallen souls back to Godhead.
- When the Lord is unhappy because of the condition of the fallen souls, the devotee consoles Him, saying, "My dear Lord, do not be in anxiety." This is service.
- The word vivigna-cetah, "very anxious," is significant. It is not that Lord Visnu was afraid of Hiranyakasipu; rather, because of compassion, Lord Visnu was in anxiety about how to act for his welfare.
Anxious to Reciprocate with Devotees
The Supreme Lord's anxiety also takes the form of profound, eager love for His surrendered servants. Śrīla Prabhupāda highlights how the Lord is constantly thinking of ways to please, protect, and personally associate with His pure devotees.
- Just as the devotees are always anxious to see the Supreme Lord satisfied in every way, similarly the Supreme Lord is very anxious to present Himself before His devotees.
- The Lord is always anxious to serve sages like the Kumaras, but in spite of knowing this fact, the doormen, astonishingly and outrageously, prohibited them from entering.
- Kapiladeva was anxious that His mother not feel the absence of His father, and He was ready to take the best care of her and give her knowledge.
- The Supreme Lord was also anxious, thinking that if He appeared as an ordinary child, she would not believe that Lord Visnu had appeared. Such are the dealings between devotees and the Lord.
Conclusion
A deep study of the Absolute Truth reveals that the Supreme Personality of Godhead is not a detached, emotionless overseer. While it is true that He is eternally free from the agonizing material anxieties born of bodily attachment and unfulfilled desires, He is remarkably vulnerable to the spiritual anxiety of pure love. Śrīla Prabhupāda beautifully explains that the Lord, as the supreme father, is constantly anxious for the welfare of the conditioned souls. He feels genuine unhappiness seeing His parts and parcels suffering in the ocean of nescience, and He actively provides the śāstra, the paramparā, and His own incarnations to guide them back home. It is this profound compassionate anxiety that drove Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu to unconditionally distribute the holy names. For the pure devotee, understanding God's anxiety is a call to action. By dedicating one's life to the preaching mission, a devotee actively consoles the Supreme Lord, relieving His anxiety by returning His beloved children to His eternal, blissful shelter. Simultaneously, the Lord is ever-anxious to serve and protect those who surrender to Him, proving that in the spiritual world, anxiety is simply another manifestation of inexhaustible, reciprocating love.
