God's Agitating - The Glance That Awakens the Cosmos
In studying the origins of the universe and the psychology of spiritual life, the concept of agitation plays a central role. Mundane scientists attempt to explain creation through the explosion of an unconscious cosmic chunk, while ordinary people struggle endlessly with the restless agitation of their own minds. Śrīla Prabhupāda provides the perfect Vedic synthesis: all agitation ultimately originates from the Supreme Personality of Godhead. It is His divine glance that agitates the dormant material energy to spark the cosmic creation, and it is His transcendental beauty that agitates the hearts of the pure devotees. Yet, amidst all this dynamic action, the Lord Himself remains the supreme, eternally unagitated Absolute Truth.
Agitating the Material Energy
The material nature is naturally dull and inert. It cannot produce the complex, moving universe without an external, conscious force. Śrīla Prabhupāda explains that the Supreme Lord initiates the entire process of creation simply by casting His glance and agitating the total material energy.
- This material nature is working under My direction, O son of Kunti, and producing all moving and unmoving beings. The Supreme Lord casts His glance over material energy, and His glance agitates the three modes of nature. Creation then takes place.
- The glancing power of the Lord agitates the entire cosmic energy, and thus its actions begin at once.
- This cosmic manifestation, the material world, is also Your body. This total lump of matter is agitated by Your potent energy known as kala-sakti, and thus the three modes of material nature are manifested.
- Western philosophers sometimes think that the original cause of creation was a chunk that exploded. If one thinks of this chunk as the total material energy, the mahat-tattva, one can understand that the chunk was agitated by the glance of the Lord.
The Manifestation of the Virāṭ-puruṣa
As the material elements are agitated and combined, the universal form of the Lord begins to develop. Śrīla Prabhupāda describes how the Lord's internal agitation generates the fundamental functions of life within the cosmos.
- The Supreme Lord Himself does the real creation by agitating His material energy, and then, by His order, Brahma, the first living creature in the universe, attempts to create the different planetary systems and their inhabitants.
- This material world does not develop unless agitated by the Supreme Lord as the virat-purusa. Yasmad udatisthad asau virat: by His agitation, space was created, and the universal form of the Lord also manifested therein.
- O Lord, O supreme eternal, by expanding Your plenary portion You have created the subtle bodies of the living entities through the agency of Your external energy, which is agitated by time.
- The living force, being agitated by the virat-purusa, generated hunger and thirst, and when He desired to drink and eat, the mouth opened.
The Unagitated Supreme Controller
While the Lord agitates the entire cosmic manifestation and easily bewilders the greatest personalities, His own consciousness is never disturbed. Śrīla Prabhupāda emphasizes that because the Lord is entirely transcendental, one must take shelter of Him to achieve true peace.
- The Supreme Personality of Godhead, being always in a transcendental position, is never agitated by anything. Therefore someone who wants to become dhira must take shelter of the lotus feet of the Lord.
- Narada said, "His transcendental form is full of knowledge which never becomes agitated by ignorance, pride, attachment, envy or sense enjoyment."
- The mind is by nature very restless, and one should not make friends with it. If we place full confidence in the mind, it may cheat us at any moment. Even Lord Siva became agitated upon seeing the Mohini form of Lord Krsna.
- When the ocean did not come, the Lord exhibited His pastimes of anger, and simply by His glancing over the ocean, all the living entities within it, including the crocodiles and sharks, were agitated by fear.
Agitating the Hearts of the Devotees
In the spiritual realm, agitation is not a product of fear or material illusion, but a symptom of profound ecstatic love. Śrīla Prabhupāda beautifully illustrates how the Lord purposefully agitates the consciousness of His pure devotees to exchange the highest spiritual mellows.
- Hearing news of the Lord's arrival from Balabhadra Bhattacarya, hordes of devotees became so happy that they seemed to be getting their lives back. It was as though their consciousness had returned to their bodies. Their senses also became agitated.
- When Sri Gopala fainted, Advaita Acarya hastily took him upon His lap. Seeing that he was not breathing, He became very much agitated.
- I wanted to agitate you, the Lord said, "but you did not become agitated. Indeed, you could not say anything in anger. Instead, you tolerated everything."
Conclusion
A comprehensive understanding of the Supreme Personality of Godhead reveals Him as the ultimate source of all cosmic and spiritual dynamism. Śrīla Prabhupāda carefully dismantles the mechanistic view of creation by explaining that the total material energy (mahat-tattva) remains completely inert until the Lord glances over it. Through the agency of His time potency (kāla-śakti), He agitates the three modes of material nature, initiating the birth of space, the virāṭ-puruṣa, and all subsequent planetary systems. Yet, while He wields the power to agitate the mighty ocean with a glance of anger or bewilder the great Lord Śiva, the Lord Himself remains eternally dhīra—unagitated by ignorance, pride, or the material modes. Only by taking shelter of this unagitated Supreme Person can a conditioned soul find true peace. Paradoxically, achieving this ultimate peace in Kṛṣṇa consciousness awakens a new, completely transcendental type of agitation. In the perfection of bhakti, the Lord lovingly agitates the hearts and senses of His pure devotees, plunging them into the boundless, ever-increasing waves of ecstatic spiritual love.
