God's Agents - The Authorized Deputies of the Supreme Lord
A persistent illusion of the conditioned soul is the belief in absolute independence. Modern scientists and politicians often believe they can manage the world without acknowledging a higher authority. However, Śrīla Prabhupāda explains that the Supreme Personality of Godhead is the ultimate controller, and He governs the entire cosmic manifestation flawlessly through a vast network of authorized agents. From the supply of basic necessities to the administration of justice and the distribution of spiritual knowledge, everything is handled by the Lord's deputies. By understanding who these agents are and how they function, we realize that our only true choice is deciding which of the Lord's agents will control our destiny.
The Supplying Agents of Nature
Mundane society boasts of its manufacturing enterprises, but Śrīla Prabhupāda points out a humbling reality: human beings cannot create anything original. Every raw material used in human industry is supplied by the agents of the Supreme Lord.
- Even for our manufacturing enterprises, we require so many raw materials like metal, sulphur, mercury, manganese, and so many essentials, all of which are supplied by the agents of the Lord.
- Either you take metal or this wood or water or food grains, whatever you are taking, using, you are exploiting the resources of material nature, but material nature is the agent of God. Material nature is an energy of God.
- One should know that all the necessities of life that the human society requires are supplied by the demigod agents of the Lord. No one can manufacture anything.
- If we forget the purpose of human life and simply take supplies from the agents of the Lord for sense gratification and become more and more entangled in material existence, which is not the purpose of creation, certainly we become thieves.
The Administrative Demigods
The universe is not governed by blind chance. Just as a government has various ministers, the Supreme Lord empowers exalted living entities, known as demigods, to act as His administrative agents, managing the complex affairs of the cosmos.
- The demigods are authorized supplying agents who act on behalf of the Supreme Personality of Godhead, Visnu. Therefore, they must be satisfied by the performance of prescribed yajnas.
- Narada questioned him that "So far we know, that you are the supreme, but you also sometimes meditate and worship somebody." So in that connection Brahma explained that "We are not supreme. We are all appointed agents."
- Brahma creates, Visnu maintains, and Lord Siva destroys. But all such agents and creative energies are emanations from the Lord, and as such there is nothing except the Lord, or the one supreme source of different diversities.
- Even when one performs yajnas, as stated here, he should always remember that the demigods are but agents of the Supreme Lord. Actually the worshipful Lord is Visnu, Yajnesvara.
The Punishing Agent of Māyā
For those who rebel against the authority of the Supreme Lord, there is no escape from control. Śrīla Prabhupāda explains that the Lord utilizes His external energy, māyā (personified as Durgā), to act as the strict punishing agent for the nondevotees.
- God is the controller always. When one becomes a devotee, he is controlled by God; when he is a nondevotee, he is controlled by His agent, maya. But he has to be controlled.
- Asuram bhavam asritah refers to those who are out and out atheists. Although there are no disadvantages to surrendering unto the Father, people who are thus characterized never do it. As a result, they are constantly punished by the agents of the Father.
- One has to give account of one's actions to the state or to the agents of the Supreme Lord called the Yamadutas.
- There are many agents of the Lord, such as Indra, Candra, Varuna, goddess Durga, and Kali, who can chastise any formidable miscreants in the world.
The Agents of Spiritual Knowledge
While the demigods supply material necessities, the Lord appoints highly elevated devotees to distribute the ultimate necessity: spiritual knowledge. Śrīla Prabhupāda highlights the role of the twelve mahājanas and the bona fide spiritual master as the Lord's agents of enlightenment.
- Twelve personalities, Brahma, Narada, Lord Siva, Kumara, Kapila, Manu, Prahlada Maharaja, Janaka Maharaja, Bhisma, Bali, Sukadeva Gosvami and Yamaraja, are agents of the Lord authorized to speak and propagate the principles of religion.
- Laws of religion are directly enacted by the Personality of Godhead, and except for the mahajanas, or the authorized agents of the Lord, no one knows the purpose of religion.
- An impersonalist cannot be a bona fide spiritual master, for such a spiritual master's only purpose in life must be to render service to God. He preaches the message of Godhead as the Lord's appointed agent and has nothing to do with sense gratification.
- Our business is to please guru. If he is satisfied, then Krsna immediately becomes satisfied, because he is the agent. That is very easy to understand.
Conclusion
A careful study of the cosmic manifestation reveals that the Supreme Personality of Godhead acts flawlessly through a vast, interconnected network of authorized agents. Śrīla Prabhupāda systematically explains that the Lord does not need to personally supply food, administer justice, or punish miscreants; these tasks are perfectly executed by His deputed agents, including the material energy (māyā) and the administrative demigods like Lord Brahmā, Indra, and Yamarāja. Conditioned souls who try to exploit these resources without acknowledging the Supreme Lord are considered thieves and are inevitably punished by the Lord's strict agents of karma. However, the Lord is supremely compassionate. To guide the conditioned souls out of this material prison, He appoints spiritual agents—the twelve mahājanas and the bona fide spiritual masters—to broadcast the true principles of religion. Furthermore, although His agents are fully capable of destroying any demon, the Lord personally descends into the material world simply to satisfy and protect His pure devotees. Ultimately, every living entity must realize that independence is an illusion; the only real choice is whether to be forced into unfavorable service by the punishing agent of māyā or to voluntarily and joyfully serve the Lord under the guidance of His bona fide spiritual agents.
