Giving Up Material Connections for Kṛṣṇa Consciousness
The material world is a vast network of temporary relationships that bind the eternal soul to the cycle of birth and death. Srila Prabhupada teaches that true spiritual life begins when we recognize the futility of our mundane bodily connections and endeavor to reestablish our lost, eternal relationship with the Supreme Personality of Godhead, Lord Kṛṣṇa.
The Illusion of Bodily Connections
Due to the influence of illusion, we mistakenly believe that our identity is tied to flesh and blood. Srila Prabhupada explains that all our mundane pursuits for name, fame, and affection are based entirely on the temporary body, and therefore these connections are instantly dissolved at the moment of death.
- As soon as the body is finished, all name, fame and profit are finished also. It is only due to ignorance that everyone is striving after the name, fame and profit connected with the body.
- Ignorant men think of the body as the self; bodily connections with others are accepted as kinsmanship; the land in which the body is obtained is the object of worship; and the formalities of religious rituals are considered ends in themselves.
- Spiritual life begins when a person understands that he is not the body. In the material world, all our connections - whether social or political or in the field of eating, sleeping, defending, and mating - are due only to the material body.
Severing Material Attachments
To make advancement in Kṛṣṇa consciousness, one must intelligently shift their focus away from worldly entanglements. Srila Prabhupada notes that a sincere spiritual seeker learns to behave properly in the world while internally maintaining strict detachment, preparing to completely enter the spiritual family of Kṛṣṇa.
- Krsna consciousness movement means to cut off family connection and enter into Krsna's family, not void.
- In the Bhagavad-gita, it is stated, param drstva nivartate: (BG 2.59) one can give up all connection with material attachment when one is able to see the param, or the superior quality of things.
- If one finds himself entangled in worldly connections, one should behave outwardly like a worldly man but remain inwardly faithful for spiritual realization. That will help one on the progressive march of life.
The Supreme Sacrifice of Pure Devotees
A genuine devotee of the Lord values their relationship with God above all material comforts and societal expectations. Srila Prabhupada highlights the extraordinary sacrifices made by great personalities like Bali Mahārāja and the gopīs, who willingly severed their most intimate material connections to satisfy the Supreme Lord.
- Sometimes, even at the risk of having to cross many stumbling blocks, a devotee relinquishes all family connections and homely comforts for the Lord's service. Can the Lord forget all these sacrifices of His bona fide devotee? No, not even for a moment.
- Bali Maharaja is a great authority in devotional service because he sacrificed everything to please the Lord and relinquished the connection of his so-called spiritual master who obstructed him on the path of risking everything for the service of the Lord.
- Gopis said, "Even in great distress one cannot give up the connection of family members, but although it might be impossible for others, we gave up our fathers, mothers, sisters and relatives (for Krsna's friendship)."
Reconnecting with the Supreme Lord
The ultimate purpose of human life is to link our consciousness back to the supreme source. Srila Prabhupada explains that all bona fide yoga systems are designed solely to reconnect us with Kṛṣṇa, thereby instantly relieving us from the distress of material existence and establishing us in eternal bliss.
- In the human society there are many different types of yoga system just to reconnect our relationship with Krsna. In the Bhagavad-gita they are explained differently, karma-yoga, jnana-yoga, hatha-yoga, dhyana-yoga, bhakti-yoga.
- If you connect yourself again with the supreme yoga - that is called real yoga - then you get rid of this so-called material happiness and distress, which is due to this body.
- By the words of the astrologer, the poor man's connection with the treasure was established. Similarly, the Vedic literature advises us that our real connection is with Sri Krsna, the Supreme Personality of Godhead.
Conclusion
Our absorption in bodily connections is the root cause of our material bondage. So long as we identify with the temporary body and its by-products—family, society, and nation—we remain trapped in the miseries of material existence. However, through the process of bhakti-yoga, we can systematically detach ourselves from these fleeting relationships and redirect our affection toward Kṛṣṇa, the Supreme Personality of Godhead. By following the examples of the great devotees and making the necessary sacrifices to serve the Lord, we sever the tight knot of material attachment and successfully reestablish our eternal, blissful connection with the Supreme.
