Giving Affection and Service to Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu
The transcendental pastimes of Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu are a continuous display of loving reciprocation between the Supreme Personality of Godhead and His pure devotees. Throughout His life—from His childhood as Nimāi to His travels as a sannyāsī—devotees were constantly engaged in giving Him their love, service, and assistance. Whether it was Sītā Ṭhākurāṇī giving Him ornaments, Govinda giving Him personal service, or His intimate associates giving Him consultation and permission to travel, every interaction was saturated with spiritual affection. The Lord, perfectly playing the part of a devotee, humbly accepted their offerings of prasādam, sought their advice, and expressed profound compassion for the fallen souls. This article explores the various ways the devotees gave themselves to Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu across eight different phases of His pastimes.
Childhood Affection and Maternal Love
In His early years, Lord Caitanya displayed the playful and sometimes mischievous nature of a young boy, giving His family and the local residents great joy. Sītā Ṭhākurāṇī gave Him His childhood name, Nimāi, and brought Him beautiful garments. As a child, the Lord would playfully interact with His mother, Śacīmātā, demanding answers for His actions, and ultimately begging a profound boon from her to observe the vow of Ekādaśī.
- She blessed the newborn child by placing fresh grass and paddy on His head and saying, "May You be blessed with a long duration of life." But being afraid of ghosts and witches, she gave the child the name Nimai.
- On the day the mother and son bathed and left the maternity home, Sita Thakurani gave them all kinds of ornaments and garments and then also honored Jagannatha Misra.
- Crying, the child inquired from His mother, "Why are you angry? You have already given Me dirt to eat. What is My fault?
- His mother replied, "My dear son, I will give You whatever You ask." Then the Lord said, "My dear mother, please do not eat grains on the Ekadasi day."
Moral Lessons and Parental Guidance
As Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu grew, His father, Jagannātha Miśra, diligently took on the responsibility of guiding Him. Playing the perfect role of a loving father, he gave his son lessons in morality to establish ideal human behavior. The Lord also exhibited His supreme nature by giving playful warnings to the local girls, demanding their offerings, and ultimately falling at the feet of His mother to ask for charity, showing the sweet dynamic of divine family life.
- On another occasion, Jagannatha Misra, seeing the mischievous acts of his son, gave Him lessons in morality after rebuking Him greatly.
- It is the duty of a father to educate his son in both religion and morality. If I do not give Him this education, how will He know of it?
- If you are miserly and do not give Me the offerings, every one of you will have an old husband with at least four co-wives.
- One day Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu fell down at the feet of His mother and requested her to give Him one thing in charity.
Devotees Eagerly Offering Prasādam
The devotees of Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu were always eager to feed and serve Him. Even though the Lord maintained the strict vows of a sannyāsī, He gracefully accepted the prasādam prepared by His associates. From Advaita Ācārya insisting He eat more, to Tapana Miśra hosting Him for lunch, every act of offering food was an intimate exchange of pure love and devotion.
- Formerly, when all the devotees had arrived from Bengal, they all desired to give Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu something to eat.
- Advaita Acarya said, "Please do not give up whatever I have already given You. Now, whatever I am giving, You may eat half and leave half."
- Tapana Misra took Caitanya Mahaprabhu to his house and gave Him lunch. Candrasekhara invited Balabhadra Bhattacarya to take lunch at his home.
- Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu said, "You can give Me the ordinary vegetable known as laphra-vyanjana, and you may deliver to all the devotees better preparations like cakes, sweet rice and amrta-gutika."
Accepting Personal Service and Care
The loving reciprocation continued through acts of personal care. Devotees like Jagadānanda Paṇḍita and Vallabha Bhaṭṭācārya dedicated themselves to ensuring the Lord was comfortable, offering Him sitting places, washing His feet, and massaging His legs. The Lord even accepted a simple offering of drinking water from Murāri Gupta to cure His indigestion, demonstrating how Kṛṣṇa empowers and honors the service of His devotees.
- After finishing His noontime ritualistic duties, the Lord arrived for lunch. Jagadananda Pandita washed the Lord's feet and gave the Lord a sitting place.
- The Lord was then given spices to purify His mouth. Afterwards He was made to rest, and Vallabha Bhattacarya personally massaged His legs.
- Lord Caitanya accepted some water from the waterpot of Murari Gupta, and thus He was cured. The natural remedy for indigestion is to drink a little water, and since Murari Gupta was a physician, he gave the Lord some drinking water and cured Him.
- Both Kasisvara and Govinda were Godbrothers of Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu, and thus the Lord duly honored them as soon as they arrived. But because Isvara Puri had ordered them to give Caitanya Mahaprabhu personal service, the Lord accepted their service.
Begging Permission to Travel
Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu beautifully demonstrated the loving dependence a devotee has on their spiritual family. Before embarking on preaching tours to South India or Vṛndāvana, He humbly asked His senior devotees, such as Rāmānanda Rāya, for their permission and consultation, not wanting to cause them any distress by His absence.
- Now I wish that you all will be pleased with Me and give Me good consultation. Tell Me how I shall be able to go to Vrndavana without impediments.
- I now beg all of you for one bit of charity. Please give Me permission to leave for a tour of South India.
- Please give Me your permission with great pleasure and do not be unhappy. If you are happy, I shall be happy on My way to Vrndavana.
- The next day Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu begged Ramananda Raya to give Him permission to leave, and at the time of farewell the Lord gave him the following orders.
Receiving Assistance for Preaching Tours
When the Lord traveled extensively to spread the mahā-mantra, His devotees and admirers ensured He was protected and assisted. They provided qualified brāhmaṇas to carry His waterpot and cook, government officials gave Him necessary intelligence for the journey, and even the wild animals of the jungle gave way to the Supreme Lord as He chanted.
- During the month of Vaisakha, He (Lord Caitanya) began to tour South India. When He proposed to travel to South India alone, Sri Nityananda Prabhu gave Him a brahmana assistant named Krsnadasa.
- Our Lord, please take one very nice brahmana with You. He will collect alms for You, cook for You, give You prasadam and carry Your waterpot while traveling.
- For two or four days, the government officer served the Lord. He also gave the Lord detailed information of what was ahead.
- When the Lord passed through the solitary forest chanting the holy name of Krsna, the tigers and elephants, seeing Him, gave way.
The Anguish of Separation from Kṛṣṇa
In His most intimate pastimes, Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu tasted the intense ecstatic love of Śrīmatī Rādhārāṇī in separation from Kṛṣṇa. He expressed that whether Kṛṣṇa gave Him pleasure or distress, He remained His unconditional Lord. This deep anguish of separation is the highest expression of transcendental love, showcasing the Lord's complete surrender to the will of Kṛṣṇa.
- Taking My words as defamation, Lord Krsna has left Me. I know that He is gone, but kindly hear My prayers in praise: 'You are the satisfaction of My eyes. You are My wealth and My life. Alas, please give Me your audience once again.'
- Or, since after all He is a very cunning, obstinate debauchee with a propensity to cheat, He takes to the company of other women. He then indulges in loving affairs with them in front of Me to give distress to My mind.
- If He likes He can tightly embrace Me and make Me feel oneness with Him, or by not giving Me His audience, He may corrode My mind and body. Nevertheless, it is He who is the Lord of My life.
- I do not mind My personal distress. I only wish for the happiness of Krsna, for His happiness is the goal of My life. However, if He feels great happiness in giving Me distress, that distress is the best of My happiness.
Compassion and the Gift of Love of God
Simultaneously, the Lord exhibited profound compassion, feeling deep unhappiness upon seeing the suffering of the conditioned souls. Through His sankīrtana movement, He freely gave the gift of the mahā-mantra, making devotees mad with spiritual bliss. His ultimate prayer was to be given the "salary" of ecstatic love of God, setting the perfect example for all humanity.
- Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu was always anxious to deliver the fallen souls because their fallen condition gave Him great unhappiness. That is the platform on which one can propagate the mission of Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu.
- My dear lord, what kind of mantra have you given Me? I have become mad simply by chanting this maha-mantra.
- Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu called Pundarika Vidyanidhi "father," and He gave him the title Premanidhi.
- Without love of Godhead, My life is useless. Therefore I pray that You accept Me as Your servant and give Me the salary of ecstatic love of God.
Conclusion
The pastimes of Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu illustrate that the perfection of life is found in giving oneself entirely to the Supreme Lord. As Śrīla Prabhupāda has systematically presented, whether it was through the simple offering of drinking water, the careful preparation of prasādam, or the vital travel assistance given by His devotees, every act of giving was an expression of pure, unmotivated love. In return, the Lord taught by His own example the ultimate standard of devotion—praying only for the "salary" of ecstatic love of Godhead, regardless of whether Kṛṣṇa gives happiness or distress. Through these beautiful exchanges of affection, Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu not only accepted the loving service of His followers but also gave the entire world the supreme gift: the path to reawaken our dormant love for Kṛṣṇa.
