From Sādhana-bhakti to Bhāva - Attachment for Devotional Service to God
The path of devotional service gradually transforms the consciousness of the conditioned soul from material attachment to pure spiritual absorption in Kṛṣṇa. Through sincere engagement in sādhana-bhakti, hearing and chanting the holy name, and associating with pure devotees, attachment for devotional service steadily awakens within the heart. Śrīla Prabhupāda repeatedly explains that this attachment is not artificial sentiment but the natural awakening of the soul’s eternal relationship with Kṛṣṇa. As devotion matures, the practitioner advances through higher stages such as ruci, āsakti, bhāva, and ultimately pure love of Godhead.
The Beginning of Spiritual Attachment
Spiritual attachment begins when the conditioned soul receives the association of devotees and develops faith in devotional service. Hearing transcendental knowledge from saintly persons gradually purifies the intelligence and redirects the heart away from material pursuits. The process of hearing and chanting awakens attraction for Kṛṣṇa consciousness and establishes the foundation of steady devotional life. In this way, attachment to devotional service develops naturally through sincere practice and proper guidance.
- After receiving spiritual messages from holy persons or pure devotees, if one tries to apply them in his own life, the path of Krsna consciousness naturally develops in faith, attachment and devotional service.
- Through good association, one develops attachment for pure devotional service and thereby accepts a bona fide spiritual master and from him begins to hear and chant and observe the regulative principles of devotional service.
- By advancing in hearing and chanting, a devotee becomes more firmly fixed in his faith, and gradually his initial faith develops into a taste for devotional service, and that taste gradually develops into attachment.
- Thus one is freed from all unwanted habits and becomes firmly fixed in devotional service. Thereafter, one develops taste and attachment. This is the way of sadhana-bhakti, the execution of devotional service according to the regulative principles.
Attachment Through Regulated Devotional Practice
The disciplined execution of devotional service under the guidance of guru, sādhus, and śāstra gradually awakens deeper absorption in Kṛṣṇa’s service. Although devotional practice initially appears regulated and deliberate, genuine attachment eventually arises from steady engagement in hearing, chanting, remembering, and worship. This attachment remains fully harmonious with scriptural principles and leads the devotee toward spontaneous devotion. The heart then naturally seeks opportunities for increasingly intimate service to Kṛṣṇa.
- Devotional service with attachment can be executed in two ways - externally and internally. Externally the devotee strictly follows the regulative principles beginning with chanting and hearing, while internally he thinks of the attachment.
- Those who have not attained the platform of spontaneous attachment in devotional service render devotional service under the guidance of a bona fide spiritual master according to the regulative principles mentioned in the revealed scriptures.
- When one is situated in firm conviction, and from that conviction he develops a taste for devotional service and advances to the stage of attachment, whereby he follows the regulative principles of devotional service.
- This particular attachment is invoked by practice of regulative devotional service to the Lord, and thus the devotee becomes attached to the eternal form of the Lord, exactly like one who is already eternally attached.
The Awakening of Rāga and Bhāva
As devotional attachment intensifies, it gradually transforms into spontaneous attraction for Kṛṣṇa known as rāga. At this stage, devotional service is no longer maintained merely by discipline but flows naturally from deep spiritual affection. The devotee develops profound emotional absorption in Kṛṣṇa’s names, forms, qualities, and pastimes. Śrīla Prabhupāda explains that this spiritual evolution culminates in bhāva, the preliminary stage of pure love of Godhead.
- According to Bhakti-rasamrta-sindhu (NOD 1.2.270), "Devotional service with ecstatic attachment for that service, which becomes natural for the devotee, is called raga, or transcendental attachment."
- When this attachment (for devotional service) intensifies, the seed of love of Krsna fructifies. This position is called priti or rati (affection) or bhava (emotion). When rati intensifies, it is called love of Godhead.
- Attainment of ecstasy is produced by execution of devotional service. When one continues the process of hearing and chanting, attachment grows and assumes the name of love of Godhead.
- When one thereby becomes completely purified of all material contamination, there develops an attachment and taste for devotional service. This taste and attachment, when gradually intensified in the course of time, becomes love.
The Example of the Residents of Vṛndāvana
The eternal residents of Vrajabhūmi demonstrate the highest perfection of attachment for devotional service. Their love for Kṛṣṇa is completely spontaneous, uninterrupted, and free from all traces of material motivation. The Vrajavāsīs do not serve Kṛṣṇa out of duty alone but out of overwhelming transcendental affection in various loving relationships. Their devotional attachment represents the supreme goal toward which all sincere practitioners of bhakti-yoga gradually advance.
- The inhabitants of Vrndavana, Vrajabhumi, are living examples of devotional service. Theirs is ideal devotional service with attachment, and such devotion cannot be found anywhere except Vrndavana.
- Whoever follows the principles of devotional service with attachment and follows a particular devotee of Vrajabhumi certainly attains the highest perfection of love of Godhead in that spirit.
- Devotional service discharged with such attachment is called ragatmika, and deep attachment with deep absorption in the object of love is called ragatmika. Examples of these can be seen in the activities of the residents of Vrajabhumi.
- If one develops devotional service and attachment by following in the footsteps of the Vrajavasis, he attains raga-marga-bhakti, or devotional service in attachment to the Lord.
Conclusion
Attachment for devotional service to God is the natural awakening of the soul’s eternal love for Kṛṣṇa. By faithfully practicing sādhana-bhakti, associating with pure devotees, and following the path given by guru, sādhus, and śāstra, the conditioned soul gradually becomes purified of material desires and fixed in transcendental service. Śrīla Prabhupāda explains that this attachment steadily matures into rāga, bhāva, and ultimately pure love of Godhead. The lives of the eternal residents of Vṛndāvana reveal the perfection of this devotional attachment and inspire all practitioners to continue advancing toward spontaneous loving service to Kṛṣṇa.
