From Analysis to Devotion - The True Purpose of Analytical Study
Human intelligence is naturally inquisitive, always seeking to break down and understand the components of reality. The Vedic literature provides the ultimate framework for this inquiry through Sāṅkhya philosophy. However, Śrīla Prabhupāda teaches that an analytical study of the universe is only successful if it leads to a specific conclusion. If our analysis of matter and spirit does not ultimately awaken our dormant love for the Supreme Personality of Godhead, it remains an incomplete and fruitless endeavor.
Distinguishing Soul from Matter
The first step in spiritual realization is understanding that we are not the physical body. Śrīla Prabhupāda explains that a proper analytical study of the material elements allows a sober person to clearly see the distinction between the temporary physical covering (earth, water, fire, etc.) and the eternal, conscious spirit soul within.
- A sober person can study himself and distinguish the soul from the body by analytical study.
- By an analytical study of the entire constitution of the body, one can surely come to the conclusion that the soul is different from all the body's material constituents, such as earth, water, fire and air.
- Sober and expert persons should search for the spirit soul with minds purified through analytical study in terms of the soul's connection with and distinction from all things that undergo creation, maintenance and destruction.
- Sankhya-yoga, or the analytical study of the nature of spirit and matter, is the subject matter for persons who are inclined to speculate and understand things by experimental knowledge and philosophy.
The True Aim of Sāṅkhya
What is the purpose of counting the elements of the universe? Śrīla Prabhupāda emphatically states that the ultimate goal of examining the cosmic manifestation is to locate the supreme energetic source. A perfect analytical study must bring the student to the realization that Lord Viṣṇu, or Kṛṣṇa, is the underlying cause of all causes and the true soul of the material world.
- The aim of the analytical study of the material world is to find the soul of existence. The soul of the material world is Visnu, or the Supersoul. Devotional service to the Lord entails service to the Supersoul.
- From all points of view, if we make an analytical study of the Vedic literatures, we will find that the ultimate summit of knowledge is to surrender unto Krsna.
- When we can understand by an analytical study that the Supreme Personality of Godhead is the cause of all causes, our knowledge is perfect.
- Let them perpetually engage in such imaginations. However, when one analytically studies all these Vedic literatures collectively, he comes to the conclusion that Lord Visnu is the one and only Supreme Personality of Godhead.
The Danger of Dry Speculation
Modern scientists and impersonal philosophers often pride themselves on their exhaustive research of the physical world. However, Śrīla Prabhupāda warns that if their analysis fails to recognize the Supreme Lord, all their hard work is completely useless. Studying nature without acknowledging its Creator is as foolish and unrewarding as beating an empty husk of rice.
- Material scientists can make an analytical study of the physical elements, the body, the senses, the sense objects and even the air that controls the vital force, but still they cannot understand that above all these is the real spirit soul.
- They (intelligent people) also analytically study all the material elements, but despite their expert knowledge and expert scientific analysis of the whole cosmic manifestation, their endeavors are useless because they cannot understand the Supreme Personality of Godhead.
- If we give up bhakti-yoga and simply busy ourselves in the analytical study of the nature of things as they are, then the result will be practically nil.
- It is stated in the Bhagavatam that such engagement (the analytical study of the nature of things as they are) is something like husking a paddy. There is no use beating the husk if the grain has already been removed.
Analyzing the Science of Devotion
Analytical study is not restricted to material elements; it is also applied to the spiritual realm. Śrīla Prabhupāda highlights how the Six Gosvāmīs of Vṛndāvana, under the order of Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu, conducted an exhaustive analytical study of the Vedic scriptures to systematically present the science of devotional service, categorizing every symptom and mellow (rasa) of pure love.
- The Gosvamis carried out the preaching work of devotional service on the basis of an analytical study of all confidential Vedic literatures. This was in compliance with the order of Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu.
- The transcendental mellows are experienced in different stages. Similarly, there are many other forms of expression that have been analytically studied by the Gosvamis. In the Brs, Rupa Gosvami gives each and every symptom a particular name.
- This mentality of the direct servitor of Krsna is called dhurya. According to expert analytical studies of the direct associates of the Lord, Srila Rupa Gosvami has divided these into three classes - namely, dhurya, dhira and vira.
- The first part (of the Brhad-bhagavatamrta) is an analytical study of devotional service, in which there is also a description of different planets, including the earth, the heavenly planets, Brahma-loka and Vaikuntha-loka.
Conclusion
Śrīla Prabhupāda reveals that the truest intellectual is the pure devotee. While speculators endlessly debate the nature of the physical universe, the devotee arrives directly at the highest truth. By understanding through analytical study that Kṛṣṇa is the complete whole and the ultimate shelter of everything, the devotee naturally engages their entire being in His loving service, bypassing all confusion and achieving the supreme perfection.
