Following the Advice of Nārada
Śrīla Prabhupāda highlights Nārada Muni as the supreme spiritual master and wandering preacher of the universe. Throughout the Vedic histories, whenever great personalities found themselves morose, bewildered, or entangled in material complexities, Nārada Muni appeared to provide perfect guidance. Whether advising an exalted literary incarnation like Śrīla Vyāsadeva, a determined prince like Dhruva Mahārāja, or even a sinful, cruel hunter, Nārada Muni’s counsel is always the same: abandon fruitive activities, mental speculation, and worldly attachments, and take direct shelter of the Supreme Personality of Godhead through pure devotional service.
Directing Vyāsadeva to the Absolute Truth
Even after compiling the Vedas, Purāṇas, and the Vedānta-sūtra, Śrīla Vyāsadeva felt a profound sense of dissatisfaction. Seeing his disciple’s moroseness, Nārada Muni identified the root cause: Vyāsadeva had not sufficiently glorified the transcendental activities of the Supreme Personality of Godhead. Nārada advised him to abandon compromising instructions that encouraged gradual material elevation and instead directly broadcast the absolute science of Kṛṣṇa consciousness. Following this advice, Vyāsadeva composed his masterwork, the Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam.
- He (Vyasadeva) was not satisfied until he wrote Srimad-Bhagavatam. His dissatisfaction was observed by his spiritual master, and consequently Narada advised him to write on the transcendental activities of the Lord Sri Krsna.
- Narada advised meditation upon the transcendental activities of the Lord. Impersonal Brahman has no activities, but the Personality of Godhead has many activities, and all such activities are transcendental, without any tinge of material quality.
- Sri Naradaji advised Vyasadeva to describe the glories of the Lord just to do good to all eight classes of men, both good and bad.
- This compromising spirit of Vyasadeva is directly condemned by Narada, who advises him to directly proclaim that the prime necessity of human life is to realize one's eternal relation with the Lord and thus surrender unto Him without delay.
Guiding Kings and Princes
Great rulers are often heavily burdened by state affairs, political entanglements, and Vedic ritualistic performances. Nārada Muni frequently intervened to save royal figures from wasting their lives in temporary pursuits. He advised King Prācīnabarhi to stop performing animal sacrifices and instead take to austerities in the forest. When the young prince Dhruva Mahārāja was insulted by his stepmother, Nārada Muni expertly guided him to the forest of Madhuvana, instructing him on how to perfectly worship the Supreme Person and achieve ultimate success.
- Dhruva Maharaja, having arrived at Madhuvana, took his bath in the River Yamuna and observed fasting in the night with great care and attention. After that, as advised by the great sage Narada, he engaged himself in worshiping the Supreme Person.
- The significance of this particular verse (SB 4.8.71) is that Dhruva Maharaja acted exactly according to the advice of his spiritual master, the great sage Narada.
- When Pracinabarhi was performing Vedic rituals in which the killing of animals was recommended, Narada Muni, out of compassion, advised him to stop. Pracinabarhi understood Narada properly and then left the kingdom to perform austerities in the forest.
- Maharaja Yudhisthira is advised by Narada not to worry about his uncles' suffering for want of food, for they could live on vegetables available in the jungles as prasada of the Supreme Lord and thus realize the path of salvation.
Delivering the Fallen
Nārada Muni's mercy is not restricted to exalted sages and kings; he is equally compassionate toward the most fallen souls. In the story of Mṛgāri, a cruel hunter who took pleasure in half-killing animals, Nārada Muni intervened, broke the hunter's bow, and advised him to chant the Hare Kṛṣṇa mantra before a Tulasī plant. By strictly following this simple but profound advice, the murderous hunter was transformed into a gentle, pure Vaiṣṇava who would not even step on an ant.
- Narada gave them (the hunter and his wife) 1 Tulasi plant, and they sat down near the Tulasi plant, and he advised that "Go on chanting Hare Krsna mantra." In the meantime, in the village it was advertised that - The hunter has become a Vaisnava. Let us go and see him.
- Narada Muni then advised the hunter, 'Return home and distribute whatever riches you have to the pure brahmanas who know the Absolute Truth'.
- According to the advice of Narada Muni, one should directly engage in devotional service. This will include all pious activity.
- Narada Muni advises Vyasadeva thusly, "Even if one does not execute his specific occupational duty, but immediately takes direct shelter of the lotus feet of Hari (Krsna), there will be no fault on his part, & in all circumstances his position is secure."
Inspiring Complete Renunciation
For those who are spiritually advanced, entering into the entanglements of family life is a great risk. When Prajāpati Dakṣa begot thousands of sons known as the Haryaśvas to populate the universe, Nārada Muni approached them. He advised the young boys that instead of becoming ordinary karmīs and begetting progeny, they should immediately leave home to achieve the perfection of spiritual understanding. The boys took his instructions to heart and departed, never to return.
- Narada Muni advised the Haryasvas not to enter household life. Since they were already advanced in spiritual knowledge, why should they be entangled in that way?
- Narada Muni described to the boys (the Haryasvas) their ultimate goal of life and advised them not to become ordinary karmis to beget children. Thus all the sons of Daksa became enlightened and left, never to return.
- Narada Muni advised the Haryasvas, the sons of Prajapati Daksa, that instead of begetting progeny, it would be better to leave and achieve the perfection of spiritual understanding according to the instructions of the sastras.
- The disciples of Narada Muni advise all the members of the younger generation to join the Krsna consciousness movement immediately. There is nothing wrong in this.
Conclusion
In summary, Śrīla Prabhupāda teaches that the path of perfection lies in submissively hearing and following the advice of authorized spiritual masters in the line of Nārada Muni. Mental speculation and material planning only lead to frustration, whether one is a king, an author, or a common laborer. By embracing Nārada's timeless counsel to abandon temporary bodily designations and surrender fully to the chanting of the holy names and the service of Śrī Kṛṣṇa, anyone can swiftly cross over the ocean of material existence and attain eternal, blissful life.
