Engaging in Loving Service to God - The Ultimate Perfection of Life
Spiritual life is not a void or a cessation of activity. According to Śrīla Prabhupāda, the true awakening of the soul occurs only when one shakes off the illusions of material sense gratification and fully engages in the spontaneous, unmotivated loving service of the Supreme Personality of Godhead.
The Constitutional Position of the Soul
To serve is the inescapable nature of the living entity. Śrīla Prabhupāda explains that when this serving propensity is directed toward Kṛṣṇa rather than material illusion, the soul instantly regains its original, healthy constitutional position, which is the actual definition of liberation.
- The constitutional position of every living being is that of the Lord's servant; therefore when a living entity is engaged in the Lord's loving service, he has already attained mukti.
- When the conditioned soul attains his real spiritual energy and fully surrenders unto the Lord’s lotus feet, he tries to engage in the Lord’s service. This is the real constitutional position of the living entity.
- The answer is that the Lord clearly wishes that every living entity be in his pure consciousness as a part and parcel of the Lord and thus be engaged in the loving service of the Lord as he is constitutionally made.
- Our philosophy is that when one is liberated, his actual life begins. What is that actual life? The actual life is to be engaged in the transcendental loving service of the Lord. That is actual life.
The Necessity of Purity
One cannot approach the Supreme Purity with contaminated motives. Śrīla Prabhupāda emphasizes that a genuine devotee rejects all desires for material prosperity or personal gain, praying only for the causeless opportunity to engage in the Lord's loving service.
- Without being pure, you cannot be engaged in the loving service of the Lord. The Lord is pure. Param brahma param dhama pavitram paramam bhavan. So you cannot approach Lord being impure.
- The Lord is the purest, and thus anyone who wants to serve the Supreme Lord must also be pure. Unless a person is pure, he can neither understand what the Personality of Godhead is nor engage in His service in love.
- Anyone who is engaged in the loving service of the Lord should never ask for material prosperity from the Lord. The awarding of material prosperity simply depends on the stringent rules and regulations of the external energy.
- Nrsimha-deva wanted to give him benediction, blessings, "Whatever you like." He refused, he said "I'm not a mercantile devotee that I'll get some benefit from You, but first benediction I want that let me engage in service of Your servant, Narada Muni."
Transcending Mundane Qualifications
Spiritual realization is entirely independent of material education or societal status. Śrīla Prabhupāda notes that even a completely illiterate person can fully realize God simply by submissively hearing from a pure devotee and engaging in sincere loving service.
- Even one is illiterate. Even he does not know what is ABCD, he can realize God provided he engages himself in this submissive transcendental loving service. And one may be very learned, high scholar, but he cannot realize God.
- One may stay in his position of life but if one hears from the mouth of a pure devotee, he gradually comes to the understanding of his relationship with the Lord and thus engages in His loving service, and his life becomes completely perfect.
- Those who engage in the loving service of the Lord become sudhiyah, intelligent, but this is not so of a Vedic scholar who does not understand Krsna's name, fame and qualities.
- The mind being spiritually cleansed, one should at once engage himself in the transcendental loving service of the Lord by the different devotional activities of hearing, chanting, etc.
The Ultimate Destination
The result of dedicating one's life to unalloyed devotion is complete freedom from the cycle of birth and death. Śrīla Prabhupāda concludes that the soul engaged in loving service is instantly freed from karma and is guaranteed eternal residence in the spiritual world.
- As soon as he (the living being) engages himself in the loving service of the Lord, he at once becomes free from the chain of karma. His actions no longer create any reaction.
- Mukti: When freed from all material affection, the soul, giving up the gross and subtle material bodies, can attain the spiritual sky in his original spiritual body and engage in transcendental loving service to the Lord in Vaikunthaloka or Krsnaloka.
- Perfection means to regain one's original spiritual form and engage in the loving service of the Lord.
- In the spiritual world, the Lord is the sublime enjoyer of everything, and the living entities there are all engaged in His transcendental loving service without any contamination of the modes of material nature.
Conclusion
In conclusion, Śrīla Prabhupāda establishes that engaging in the loving service of the Supreme Lord is the ultimate perfection and the true constitutional position of every living entity. Real liberation is not the artificial cessation of activities sought by impersonalists, but the joyous, dynamic engagement of all one's faculties in the service of Kṛṣṇa. This transcendental service demands absolute purity; a genuine devotee rejects all mercantile mentalities, refusing to ask for material prosperity or personal benedictions, just as Prahlāda Mahārāja famously demonstrated. Furthermore, this sublime process completely bypasses the need for mundane qualifications. Even an illiterate person who submissively hears from a pure devotee and engages in sincere service achieves the highest realization of God, whereas a proud, materially educated scholar remains in the dark. By faithfully engaging in this unalloyed, spontaneous loving service, the practitioner is immediately freed from the stringent laws of karma. Ultimately, when the soul is completely cleansed of all material affection, they regain their original spiritual form and are permanently transferred to the spiritual sky, eternally absorbed in the blissful, loving service of the Supreme Personality of Godhead.
