Engaging in God's Service - The Eternal Duty of the Soul
The material world is a place of deep forgetfulness where the living entity falsely attempts to become the supreme enjoyer. Śrīla Prabhupāda explains that the only way to cure this illusion and achieve true liberation is by realizing our eternal constitutional position and fully engaging all our senses, wealth, and intelligence in the loving service of the Supreme Personality of Godhead.
The Constitutional Position of the Soul
True self-realization is not the realization that one is God, but the realization that one is God's eternal servant. Śrīla Prabhupāda emphasizes that regardless of one's material situation, recognizing and acting upon this eternal relationship is the foundation of all spiritual success.
- Every living entity is by constitutional position an eternal servant of Krsna. As soon as one engages in the service of Lord Vasudeva, he attains his normal constitutional position. This position is called the liberated stage.
- Jivera 'svarupa' haya-krsnera 'nitya-dasa.' (CC Madhya 20.108). The living entity is eternally the servant of the Lord, and thus when he engages himself in the service of the Lord in all respects, he enjoys the perfection of life.
- The living entity, his real constitutional position is to serve God. We have several times explained this fact, that the part and parcel of God must be engaged in the service of the Lord.
- Self-realization is when you actually engage yourself in the service of the Lord. That is your self-realization. Because you are part and parcel, your duty is to serve the whole. If you think yourself, "I am whole," that is wrong conception.
- I may have many activities. But my identity is that I am eternal servant of God. So if I love myself, because I am eternal servant of God, therefore, if I actually I love myself, I must always engage myself in the service of the Lord. This is love.
Purifying the Senses
The material senses are notoriously difficult to control and constantly drag the mind into illusion. However, Śrīla Prabhupāda points out that rather than artificially stopping the senses, the safest and most effective method of control is to actively dovetail them in the service of the Lord.
- When the senses are engaged in the Lord's service, they are like poisonous snakes with their fangs removed, and so they are no longer dangerous.
- If a venomous serpent is bereft of its poison fangs, it is no longer fearful. Similarly, if the senses are engaged in the service of the Lord, there is no need to fear their activities.
- The senses and the action of the senses are to be considered impure or materialistic as long as they are employed only in sense gratification. The purified senses are engaged not in sense gratification but in the service of the Lord in toto.
- Everything - the mind, the body and all the sense organs - should be engaged in Krsna's service. This is to be learned from expert devotees like Narada, Svayambhu and Sambhu. This is the process.
- As far as the eyes are concerned, they should not be allowed to see anything but Krsna. That will control the eyes. Similarly, the ears should be engaged in hearing about Krsna and the nose in smelling the flowers offered to Krsna.
Yukta-vairāgya: The True Renunciation
The philosophy of Kṛṣṇa consciousness does not demand the rejection of the material world, but its proper utilization. Śrīla Prabhupāda teaches the principle of yukta-vairāgya, wherein all material elements—money, technology, and talents—are spiritualized the moment they are practically engaged in Kṛṣṇa's service.
- If one engages all material things in relation with the loving service of the Lord, one is situated in yukta-vairagya, proper renunciation.
- This is required, that everything engaged in Krsna's service. That is called yukta-vairagya. Not phalgu-vairagya. Rupa Gosvami says, "Motor car is material; therefore we should not touch it" - this is phalgu-vairagya.
- When the material energy is engaged in the service of the Supreme Spirit, so-called material energy is also transformed into spiritual energy, just as an iron rod becomes fire when placed in contact with fire.
- The material conception of a thing is at once changed as soon as it is put into the service of the Lord. That is the secret of spiritual success.
- Anything which can be engaged in the service of the Lord should not be given up. This is our philosophy. Should not be given up. We do not say, "Oh, money is material. I do not touch. My hand becomes turned up." No.
Purity of Motive
A genuine devotee does not approach the Supreme Lord to fulfill a shopping list of material desires. Śrīla Prabhupāda strongly asserts that the highest perfection is to serve Kṛṣṇa simply out of spontaneous love, completely free from the desires for wealth, mystic power, or impersonal liberation.
- One who is engaged in the service of the Lord, purified, unalloyed . . . unalloyed means no motive. No motive. Anyabhilasita-sunyam (Brs. 1.1.11). Other motives, completely zero.
- A pure devotee should be free from all kinds of material desire. He simply engages in the service of the Lord.
- When a devotee prays to the Lord, it is not to ask for material benefits but to ask the Lord for His favor; he prays that he may be engaged in the service of the Lord's lotus feet birth after birth.
- If you are engaged in the service of the Lord without any motive and without being impeded, spontaneously loving, then you will feel complete satisfaction. Svamin krtartho 'smi varam na yace.
- The pure devotee refuses to accept all the five different types of liberation in order to be engaged in the service of the Lord.
Protection from Material Laws
The laws of karma and material nature rigidly bind the ordinary conditioned soul, but they have no jurisdiction over a fully surrendered devotee. Śrīla Prabhupāda clarifies that continuous engagement in Kṛṣṇa's service elevates a person to the transcendental platform, immediately freeing them from the fears and punishments of māyā.
- Anyone who is not devotee, who is not engaged in the service of the Lord, he is under the control of maya. And anyone who has surrendered to Krsna and is simply twenty-four hours engaged in the service of Krsna, he is not under the control of maya.
- Anyone who is engaged in the service of the Lord, he is transcendental to all these material laws. He is not material. Just like this child: he does not know what is Krsna Consciousness, but he is also dancing, because he is already on the transcendental platform.
- The criminal department is troublesome for the criminal but not for the obedient citizen. Similarly, this material energy is troublesome for the conditioned soul, but it has nothing to do with the liberated souls who are engaged in the service of the Lord.
- If our minds, senses, speech, money and energies are thus engaged in the service of Krsna, we cannot be considered to be existing in material nature. By virtue of spiritual consciousness, or Krsna consciousness, we transcend the platform of material nature.
- Perfect self-realized souls, engaged in the service of the Lord, are unafraid of maya, just as law-abiding citizens of a state never fear the police.
The Perfection of Jīvan-mukta
One does not have to wait until death to achieve liberation. Śrīla Prabhupāda confirms that any person who employs their entire life, wealth, words, and intelligence in the absolute service of the Supreme Lord is considered a liberated soul (jīvan-mukta), even while residing within the material body.
- If one engages himself in the service of the Lord through his life, wealth, words, intelligence and everything he possesses, he will always be liberated in any condition. Such a person is called a jivan-mukta, one who is liberated during this lifetime.
- If one always remains a servant of Krsna and engages everything in His service, one is accepted as jivan-mukta, a liberated soul, even during his lifetime within the material world.
- One who desires to engage all these (his vital energy, his wealth, his intelligence and his words) in the service of the Lord, no matter how he is situated, is to be considered a liberated soul, or satya-drk. Such a man has understood things as they are.
- If someone is one-hundred-percent engaged in the service of the Lord, he is to be understood as liberated.
- That very service to the Supreme Personality of Godhead is the process of his liberation because to engage oneself in the service of the Lord is to liberate oneself from material entanglement.
Examples of Supreme Engagement
The Vedic histories document the lives of exalted individuals who demonstrated the highest standard of devotional engagement. Śrīla Prabhupāda highlights how figures like King Pratāparudra, the Pāṇḍavas, and the great Gosvāmīs transcended their social status by engaging in menial and profound service for the Lord's pleasure.
- When Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu saw the King (Prataparudra) engaged in menial service for Lord Jagannatha, He became very happy. Thus the King became eligible to receive Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu's mercy.
- Yudhisthira Maharaja and his brothers the Pandavas were all engaged in the service of the Lord Sri Krsna, and they had very little attraction for the illusory happiness of this material world.
- A paramahamsa simply engages exclusively in the service of the Lord without caring even for eating or sleeping. It was stated about the six Gosvamis: nidrahara-viharakadi-vijitau.
- He (Maharaja Ambarisa) engaged his senses and mind in the service of the Lord. This process is called yukta-vairagya, or feasible renunciation, which is quite suitable for worship of the Supreme Personality of Godhead.
- When Raghunatha dasa Gosvami approached Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu at Jagannatha Puri, the Lord entrusted him to the care of Svarupa Damodara, His secretary. Thus they both engaged in the confidential service of the Lord.
The Ultimate Destination
The perfection of a life dedicated entirely to the service of Kṛṣṇa culminates at the moment of death. Śrīla Prabhupāda assures us that a pure devotee who constantly engages their body, mind, and words in Kṛṣṇa's service effortlessly transfers to the spiritual world, never to return to material existence.
- In the Vaikuntha planets the Lord is perfect, and the inhabitants also perfectly engage in the service of the Lord.
- The difference between the inhabitants of a Vaikuntha planet and those of a material planet is that in Vaikuntha all the residents engage in the service of the Lord Himself and are equipped with all His good qualities.
- It is confirmed in Bhagavad-gita (tyaktva deham punar janma naiti (BG 4.9)). If one is free from the bondage of both the gross and subtle material bodies and remains a pure soul, he returns home, back to Godhead, to be engaged in the service of the Lord.
- As soon as we engage ourselves in the service of Krsna, there is no longer any chance of falling down again into the material world.
- Please continue to engage wholeheartedly in Krsna's service and there is no doubt that you may go back to home, back to Godhead in this life.
Conclusion
In conclusion, Śrīla Prabhupāda masterfully delineates that engaging in the service of the Supreme Personality of Godhead is not merely an optional religious activity, but the absolute, eternal constitutional duty of every living entity. When the soul attempts to exploit the material world, their senses become like dangerous, venomous snakes that repeatedly inject the poison of material suffering. However, through the sublime process of yukta-vairāgya, a devotee actively engages these very senses, along with their wealth, intelligence, and talents, directly in the service of Kṛṣṇa. This profound engagement extracts the poisonous fangs of material desire, instantly spiritualizing the devotee's entire existence. True devotional service must be executed anyābhilāṣitā-śūnyam—without the slightest tinge of personal motive for material opulence or impersonal liberation. Great historical figures like the Pāṇḍavas, King Pratāparudra, and the six Gosvāmīs perfectly demonstrated this unalloyed dedication. By remaining fully engaged in Kṛṣṇa's service twenty-four hours a day, a sincere practitioner transcends the stringent laws of māyā and is recognized as a jīvan-mukta, a liberated soul even within the material body. Ultimately, this continuous, joyful engagement guarantees that at the end of life, the devotee effortlessly crosses beyond the material universe to assume their eternal, blissful residence in the Vaikuṇṭha planets, forever engaged in the loving service of the Lord.
