Emanating from Viṣṇu - Universes, Avatars, and the Sacred Ganges
The sheer scale of the material creation is beyond the comprehension of ordinary science. Śrīla Prabhupāda explains that the countless universes, the demigods who manage them, and the incarnations who protect them all perfectly and effortlessly emanate from the gigantic expansions of Lord Viṣṇu.
The Breathing of Mahā-Viṣṇu
The origin of all material universes is traced back to a single, gigantic form of the Lord. Śrīla Prabhupāda describes how Mahā-Viṣṇu rests in a mystic slumber, and with His effortless breathing, infinite universes emanate from His pores like molecular particles of dust.
- The first form of Lord Visnu is called Maha-Visnu. He is the original creator of the total material energy. The innumerable universes emanate from the pores of His body.
- Millions of universes emanate from the breathing of the Maha-Visnu. In the Tenth Chapter of Bhagavad-gita (BG 10.42), Krsna gives Arjuna some indication of His infinite glory, and He concludes His descriptions with the following statement.
- When Maha-Visnu exhales, the spiritual seeds of the universes emanate from Him in the form of molecular particles like those that are visible, three times the size of an atom, when sunlight is diffused through a small hole.
- These innumerable universes are produced from the pores of the Maha-Visnu's body. As innumerable particles of dust pass through the tiny holes in a screen, similarly from the pores of the Maha-Visnu's body innumerable universes emanate.
The Source of Incarnations
To maintain cosmic order, the Lord periodically descends into the material world. Śrīla Prabhupāda clarifies that while Kṛṣṇa is the original Supreme Personality of Godhead, the avatāras who appear within the material universes specifically emanate from His plenary expansions as Lord Viṣṇu.
- Devaki said - My dear Lord, Your eternal forms, like Narayana, Lord Rama, Sesa, Varaha, Nrsimha, Vamana, Baladeva, and millions of similar incarnations emanating from Visnu, are described in the Vedic literature as original.
- All the incarnations within the universe are emanations from this Ksirodakasayi Visnu.
- For affairs of the material creation, Lord Maha-Visnu, the plenary portion of Krsna, is in charge. Thus, when the Lord descends, the incarnation emanates from Visnu.
- This chapter (of Bhagavad-gita) reveals Krsna as the cause of all causes. He is even the cause of the Maha-visnu, from whom the material universes emanate. Krsna is not an incarnation; He is the source of all incarnations.
The Birth of Brahmā
Before creation can be detailed within each universe, an chief engineer is required. Śrīla Prabhupāda notes that Garbhodakaśāyī Viṣṇu enters each individual universe, and from His transcendental navel emanates the magnificent lotus flower that serves as the birthplace for Lord Brahmā.
- Another name for Lord Brahma is Svayambhu because he was born from a lotus flower emanating from the navel of Lord Visnu. Since he was not born of a father and mother, he is therefore called Svayambhu.
- After devotedly worshiping the upraised lotus feet of the Supreme Lord with oblations of water, Lord Brahma, who was born of the lotus emanating from Lord Visnu's navel, offered prayers to the Lord.
- He (Lord Maha-Visnu) is known as Purusottama, the supreme or best Personality of Godhead, because from this form emanates within the material world another form of Visnu, known as Garbhodakasayi Visnu.
- There are innumerable brahmandas, all of which emanate from the pores of Karanodakasayi Visnu, and in every brahmanda there is a Garbhodakasayi Visnu, who is a partial expansion of Aniruddha.
The Sacred Ganges
The purifying power of sacred rivers is a central feature of Vedic geography. Śrīla Prabhupāda explains that the River Ganges is revered above all others because its waters emanate directly from the toe of Lord Viṣṇu, making it capable of washing away all material sins.
- The water of the Ganges is sanctified because it emanates from the toe of Lord Visnu.
- The Ganges is called a sacred river because it emanates from the toe of Visnu. The Ganges is meant to eradicate all the material distresses of the conditioned souls.
- The greatness of mother Ganges always brilliantly exists. She is the most fortunate because she emanated from the lotus feet of Sri Visnu, the Personality of Godhead.
- Lord Siva, the best of demigods, who carries on his forehead the emblem of the moon, receives on his head with great devotion the Ganges water emanating from the toe of Visnu. Being aware of religious principles, Bali Maharaja knew this.
Conclusion
In conclusion, Śrīla Prabhupāda paints a majestic picture of the Vedic cosmos, where all of material creation rests entirely upon the inconceivable potencies of Lord Viṣṇu. Far from being a random explosion of matter, the cosmic manifestation is a highly organized structure that begins when infinite molecular universes emanate from the pores of Mahā-Viṣṇu. Within each of these spheres, Garbhodakaśāyī Viṣṇu expands, from whose navel emanates the magnificent lotus bearing Lord Brahmā, the secondary creator. Whenever the universes require protection, the Supreme Lord answers the call, with avatars like Lord Rāma and Narasiṁha emanating directly from Kṣīrodakaśāyī Viṣṇu. Even the highest planetary systems are sanctified by the River Ganges, which derives its absolute purifying power by emanating from the lotus toe of Lord Viṣṇu. By contemplating these staggering facts, the conditioned soul is meant to recognize their own tiny position and lovingly surrender to Lord Kṛṣṇa, the original cause of all causes, from whom even the great expansions of Viṣṇu eternally emanate.
