Divine Intervention - The Mercy of Kṛṣṇa's Stopping
The activities of Kṛṣṇa often involve a sudden halting of worldly momentum. Śrīla Prabhupāda teaches that when the Supreme Lord stops an activity — whether it is a religious ritual, a material law, or a demoniac plan — it is always an act of divine intervention intended to bring the living entity closer to the Truth. Through these acts of stopping, Kṛṣṇa asserts His position as the supreme controller and the most compassionate friend of all.
Stopping the Rituals of the Demigods
One of the most famous examples of Kṛṣṇa's intervention was His stopping the sacrifice intended for Indra. Śrīla Prabhupāda explains that Kṛṣṇa wanted to stop the worship of demigods among His devotees to establish exclusive devotional service. By stopping this age - old ceremony, Kṛṣṇa humbled Indra and reminded all the residents of Vraja that their faith should be placed in the Supreme Lord alone.
- King Indra was certainly a devotee, not a demon, but because he was puffed up, Krsna wanted to teach him a lesson. He first made Indra angry by stopping the Indra-puja, which had been arranged by the cowherd men in Vrndavana.
- Indra said, "I acted out of severe anger caused by Your stopping the sacrifice which was to be held to satisfy me. But, my dear Lord (Krsna), You are so kind to me that You have bestowed Your mercy upon me by destroying all my false pride."
- Lord Sri Krsna, when He was personally present at Vrajadhama, stopped the worship of the demigod Indra and advised the residents of Vraja to worship by their business and to have faith in God.
- In order to stop all such activities (of worshiping the demigods) by His devotees, Krsna wanted to firmly establish exclusive devotional service during His presence in Vrndavana.
Stopping the Reactions of Karma and Sin
Śrīla Prabhupāda frequently highlights that Kṛṣṇa has the unique power to stop the consequences of a person's past actions. While the material world operates under strict laws, devotional service to Kṛṣṇa is so powerful that it can stop the reactions of sinful life immediately. This mercy allows the devotee to be liberated from the mechanical burdens of karma.
- Devotional service is so strong that if one fully surrenders to Krsna and takes fully to His devotional service, the reactions of his sinful life immediately stop.
- In the Brahma-samhita (BS 5.38) it is said, karmani nirdahati kintu ca bhakti-bhajam. Lord Krsna is so merciful that He can stop the reactions of karma for His devotee.
- His (Krsna's) name is anumanta. Without His sanction, you cannot have anything. Just like I am moving this hand. It is by His sanction. As soon as He stops His sanction, immediately paralyzed.
- Krsna continued, "My dear wife, I am the bestower of all benedictions, even up to the standard of liberation from this material world, and it is I only who can stop the continuation of material existence and call one back home, back to Godhead."
Stopping Demoniac and Disturbing Activities
Kṛṣṇa's intervention is often required to stop the nonsense created by those with a demoniac mentality. Śrīla Prabhupāda notes that Kṛṣṇa appeared as Lord Buddha to stop the unnecessary slaughter of animals. Furthermore, the Lord kills demons to stop them from continuing their nefarious activities, effectively purifying them and stopping their habit of blaspheming the Divine.
- He (Krsna) is compassionate always; He becomes so compassionate that He comes to stop this nonsense. That is buddha-sarira. Lord Buddha appeared when there was too much animal slaughter.
- Krsna is so merciful that because the demon Putana came to offer her breast milk to Him, He fulfilled her desire and accepted her activity as motherly. But to stop her from further nefarious activities, He immediately killed her.
- Their (Krsna's, Arjuna's and Bhima's) purpose in killing Jarasandha was to stop him from creating a disturbance to the proper discharge of world peace.
- When Krsna punishes a demon or conditioned soul, He stops that soul's habit of blaspheming Him, and when the soul becomes completely pure, the Lord takes him back to Godhead.
Stopping for the Sake of His Devotees
In His intimate pastimes, Kṛṣṇa often stops His own plans or speech to reciprocate with His devotees. Śrīla Prabhupāda describes how Kṛṣṇa stopped Mother Yaśodā from churning yogurt so that she would focus on Him. He also stopped at Hastināpura, delaying His departure for Dvārakā, simply to oblige Mahārāja Yudhiṣṭhira and show mercy to Bhīṣmadeva.
- Krsna was sleeping within the room, and as soon as He got up, He became hungry and went to His mother. Wanting to stop her from churning and drink the milk of her breasts, He stopped her from moving the churning rod.
- Krsna was to start for Dvaraka, His own kingdom, after the Battle of Kuruksetra & Yudhisthira's being enthroned, but to oblige the request of Yudhisthira and to show special mercy to Bhismadeva, Lord Krsna stopped at Hastinapura, the capital of the Pandavas.
- After thus informing the King of the demons, Krsna stopped speaking, and Bali Maharaja understood the Lord's purpose.
- Krsna took the wheel of the chariot and came before him that, - Bhisma, you stop this fight, otherwise I'll kill you.
Conclusion
The various instances of Kṛṣṇa's stopping are all manifestations of His absolute control and causeless mercy. Whether He is stopping the cycle of birth and death for a distressed prince or stopping the flow of a sacrifice to purify a demigod's heart, His intent is always the welfare of the living entity. The Lord's pastimes themselves never truly stop; they only become invisible to the material eye. By understanding the science of Kṛṣṇa's interventions, the devotee learns to pray for the Lord to stop their own material attachments and reestablish their eternal spiritual position. Through the guidance of Śrīla Prabhupāda, we see that Kṛṣṇa's checking of material nature is the ultimate protection for the soul.
