Describing the Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam - The Spotless Purāṇa
The ultimate goal of all Vedic knowledge is to understand the Supreme Personality of Godhead. Śrīla Prabhupāda explains that the Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam stands supreme above all other literatures because it flawlessly describes the Absolute Truth, offering the conditioned souls the direct path back to the spiritual world.
The Essence of Vedic Literature
The Vedas contain vast amounts of knowledge covering every aspect of material and spiritual life. However, according to Śrīla Prabhupāda, the Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam is the ripened fruit of the Vedic desire tree, offering the perfect, uncontaminated description of the Supreme Lord.
- Caitanya Mahaprabhu describes Srimad-Bhagavatam as the spotless Purana because it contains transcendental narrations of the pastimes of the Supreme Personality of Godhead Sri Krsna.
- Here it is recommended that "Srimad-Bhagavatam is the essence of all Vedic literature, and it was first spoken by Sukadeva Gosvami." The Vedic literature is full of knowledge. That I have described. And the essence of Vedic literature is Srimad-Bhagavatam.
- Srimad-Bhagavatam is the greatest contribution of Vedic literature. In the Vedic literature we find a desire tree. Whatever knowledge you want to derive, there is in the Vedic literature, and SB is described as nigama-kalpa-taror galitam phalam.
- Srimad-Bhagavatam is the perfect description of the all-perfect Personality of Godhead by the all-perfect personality Srila Vyasadeva, the compiler of the Vedas.
The Compassion of Śukadeva Gosvāmī
The narration of this great literature is an act of supreme spiritual welfare. Śrīla Prabhupāda highlights how Śukadeva Gosvāmī, although completely situated in transcendental bliss, mercifully described the Bhāgavatam to Mahārāja Parīkṣit to deliver the suffering souls of this age.
- Still, he (Sukadeva) was attracted by the transcendental pastimes of the Supreme Personality of Godhead, and out of compassion for the people he described the transcendental historical literature called Srimad-Bhagavatam. This is compared to the light of the Absolute Truth.
- Sukadeva Gosvami is addressed as maha-bhaga. Maha means great, and bhaga means fortunate. Because he is very fortunate, he is describing Srimad-Bhagavatam.
- Sukadeva Gosvami, he described also the Srimad-Bhagavatam to Maharaja Pariksit for seven days only. He also became fully Krsna consciousness. So it is a thing which is not material. In material calculation one has to wait.
- This Bhagavata reading is also described as kirtana by Sukadeva Gosvami. Abhavad vaiyasakih kirtane. Kirtane. It is called kirtana.
The Potency of Hearing and Describing
Spiritual realization is an active, dynamic process of reception and transmission. Śrīla Prabhupāda points out that after one submissively hears the descriptions of the Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam, the natural and purifying next step is to continuously chant and describe those same narrations to others.
- One can attain the highest perfection if one hears Srimad-Bhagavatam. This hearing is described as nityam bhagavata-sevaya.
- One who has actually heard (Srimad Bhagavatam) attentively, his next business will be how to describe it, kirtanam. One who has heard nicely from the spiritual master, the next business will be how to chant it, repeat it. That is natural.
- What I am speaking before you from Srimad-Bhagavatam or Bhagavad-gita, that is also chanting. This is also kirtana. Kirtana means describing.
- The endeavor of one who constantly hears or describes this narration of the churning of the ocean of milk will never be fruitless. Indeed, chanting the glories of the Supreme Personality of Godhead is the only means to annihilate all sufferings in this material world.
The Mercy of the Ācāryas
The profound meanings of the Bhāgavatam cannot be unlocked by mundane academic study. Śrīla Prabhupāda concludes that one must strictly avoid the speculative interpretations of the Māyāvādīs and instead receive the descriptions through the causeless mercy of the authorized disciplic succession.
- Thereupon the supplementary Vedic literature, Srimad-Bhagavatam, which was described by the Personality of Godhead and which contains ten characteristics, was told with satisfaction by the father (Brahma) to his son Narada.
- The great souls expert in describing Srimad-Bhagavatam have very diligently delineated the other nine categories, sometimes by direct narrations and sometimes by indirect narrations such as stories.
- They (mayavadis) have no faith. On the contrary, they describe it (Srimad-Bhagavatam) in their own way. We should not hear, therefore, from the Mayavadis.
- Were we not favored by Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati, by our first meeting for a few minutes only, it would have been impossible for us to accept this mighty task of describing Srimad-Bhagavatam in English.
Conclusion
In conclusion, Śrīla Prabhupāda establishes that the Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam is not merely a book of ancient histories, but the radiant, spotless Purāṇa that directly illuminates the Absolute Truth. Compiled by Śrīla Vyāsadeva and first spoken by the immensely fortunate Śukadeva Gosvāmī, it represents the very essence of all Vedic knowledge, completely devoid of mundane religiosity and material motives. The practice of hearing and subsequently describing the Bhāgavatam is identical to performing kīrtana; it is the most powerful method for vanquishing all sinful reactions and escaping the miseries of material existence. However, this transcendental vibration must be received in the proper mood of submissive hearing. By rejecting the faithless speculations of the Māyāvādīs and taking shelter of the descriptions provided by the great ācāryas in the disciplic succession, any sincere soul can successfully access the supreme nectar of the Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam and attain the ultimate perfection of eternal loving service to Lord Kṛṣṇa.
