Describing Viṣṇu - The Supreme Puruṣa Expansions
The Absolute Truth is often misunderstood by those who rely on mental speculation. However, Śrīla Prabhupāda explains that the Vedic literatures provide exact, authorized descriptions of the Supreme Personality of Godhead, Lord Viṣṇu, detailing His majestic expansions, His transcendental form, and His role as the origin of all creation.
The Origin of Everything
The supreme cause of all causes is not a void or a blind force. Śrīla Prabhupāda emphasizes that according to all authentic scriptures, Lord Viṣṇu is definitively described as the ultimate origin of everything, completely free from the contamination of the material modes.
- According to different phases of understanding, Lord Visnu is differently described, but in fact He is the origin of everything.
- In all Vedic scriptures Visnu has been described as being free from all material qualities.
- Krsna, Visnu, is the actual origin of everything. As stated in the Vedas, yasya bhasa sarvam idam vibhati. The Absolute Truth is described later in the Srimad-Bhagavatam (SB 10.28.15) as satyam jnanam anantam yad brahma-jyotih sanatanam.
- Lord Siva says that spirit and matter are not creations of various philosophers, but are manifested by Lord Visnu, as described in this verse (SB 4.24.63): tvam eka adyah purusah.
The Puruṣa Expansions
To execute the creation, maintenance, and annihilation of the material cosmos, the Lord expands Himself. Śrīla Prabhupāda points out that the scriptures meticulously describe the three puruṣa-avatāras—the magnificent forms of Mahā-Viṣṇu—who manage the workings of the entire material energy.
- The three different forms of Maha-visnu - namely Karanodakasayi Visnu, Garbhodakasayi Visnu and Ksirodakasayi Visnu, who are the origin of creation and maintenance - are gradually being described - in SB 7.9.33.
- It has been described in many places before this that the Lord assumed a gigantic body, like that of Karanodakasayi Visnu, from whose hair pores innumerable universes have generated.
- In the tenth and eleventh verses Krsnadasa Kaviraja describes Garbhodakasayi Visnu and Ksirodakasayi Visnu, successive plenary expansions of Maha-Visnu. Brahma appears upon a lotus growing from the navel of Garbhodakasayi Visnu - CC Intro.
- This is only a general description. Please try to understand another meaning of tryadhisa. The three purusa incarnations of Visnu are the original cause of the material creation.
The Personal Form of the Lord
Despite His immense power over the cosmic manifestation, the Lord remains a person. Śrīla Prabhupāda highlights how the texts defeat impersonalist philosophy by providing vivid descriptions of Lord Viṣṇu's beautiful face, His smile, and the specific weapons held in His four hands.
- These particular descriptions of meditation on the smile, laughter, face, lips and teeth all indicate conclusively that God is not impersonal. It is described here (in SB 3.28.33) that one should meditate on the laughter or smiling of Visnu.
- In his description of Krsna's beauty, Lord Siva uses the words carvayata-catur-bahu sujata-rucirananam, indicating the beautiful four-armed form of Narayana, or Visnu. Those who worship Lord Krsna describe Him as sujata-rucirananam.
- In the spiritual sky the representations of Narayana are described as follows: Govinda (disc, mace, flower and conch), Visnu-murti (mace, flower, conch and disc), Madhusudana (disc, conch, flower and mace), Trivikrama - flower, mace, disc and shell.
- The real tattva, Absolute Truth, is Bhagavan, but due to incomplete realization of the Absolute Truth, people sometimes describe the same Visnu as impersonal Brahman or localized Paramatma.
The Perfection of Śravaṇaṁ Kīrtanam
The prescribed method for understanding this supreme science is simply hearing and narrating. Śrīla Prabhupāda concludes that describing the forms and pastimes of Lord Viṣṇu (śravaṇaṁ kīrtanam viṣṇoḥ) is the most purifying and joyful process of spiritual realization.
- Sravanam kirtanam visnoh (SB 7.5.23). One must simply hear about and describe Lord Visnu and His various incarnations. This narration concerning Prahlada Maharaja and Lord Nrsimhadeva, therefore, has properly described spiritual, transcendental subjects.
- Pariksit Maharaja was listening, and Sukadeva Gosvami was performing kirtana by describing the glories of the Lord. Prthu Maharaja simply worshiped the Lord, and Laksmidevi massaged Visnu's lotus feet.
- O rsis, who are as powerfully pure as the sun, I (Suta Gosvami) shall try to describe to you the transcendental pastimes of Visnu as far as my knowledge is concerned.
- Now, if you (Sukadeva Gosvami) will, kindly describe the wonderful, glorious activities of Lord Visnu, or Krsna, who appeared in that Yadu dynasty with Baladeva, His plenary expansion - SB 10.1.2.
Conclusion
In conclusion, Śrīla Prabhupāda establishes that the Absolute Truth is ultimately realized as the Supreme Person, Lord Viṣṇu. The vast body of Vedic literature decisively refutes impersonalist speculation by providing concrete, authorized descriptions of the Lord's transcendental forms and majestic expansions. The scriptures meticulously detail how the three puruṣa-avatāras—Kāraṇodakaśāyī Viṣṇu, Garbhodakaśāyī Viṣṇu, and Kṣīrodakaśāyī Viṣṇu—effortlessly generate, manage, and pervade the entire cosmic manifestation. Yet, despite this unfathomable greatness, Lord Viṣṇu retains His beautiful, eternal, four-armed form, inviting the loving meditation of His devotees. The highest perfection of human life is to immerse oneself in śravaṇaṁ kīrtanam viṣṇoḥ—submissively hearing and enthusiastically describing these divine forms and pastimes. By dedicating one's consciousness to these pure, transcendental narrations, the sincere soul easily transcends the illusion of the material world and attains the supreme eternal shelter at the lotus feet of Lord Viṣṇu.
