Descending Process - The Path of Perfect Knowledge
The pursuit of the Absolute Truth requires a flawless method of inquiry. Śrīla Prabhupāda explains that trying to understand the infinite through finite, independent speculation is impossible; one must receive perfect knowledge through the authorized, descending process of disciplic succession.
Two Processes of Knowledge
Vedic philosophy clearly divides epistemology into two distinct categories. Śrīla Prabhupāda notes that humanity attempts to acquire knowledge either through the material method of inductive research or through the spiritual method of deductive reception from a higher authority.
- According to Brahma-samhita there are two ways of acquiring knowledge - the ascending process and the descending process.
- One is called ascending process, or inductive logic, and another process is descending process, or deductive logic. So ascending process is based on speculation, and descending process is based on fact.
- This is the way of understanding. It is called descending process. And there is another process, which is called ascending process. In Sanskrit it is called aroha-pantha, avaroha-pantha.
- There are two kinds of processes to receive knowledge. The Vedic process says avaroha-pantha, descending process. And the material process is aroha-pantha, ascending process, research.
The Flaw of the Ascending Process
Relying on one's own intellect to understand God is a fundamentally flawed strategy. Śrīla Prabhupāda explains that the ascending process, favored by empiricists and mental speculators, is doomed to fail because it is entirely dependent on the inherently imperfect senses of the conditioned soul.
- Ascending process and descending process. So by ascending process, we can never come to the real knowledge. That is not possible, because our senses are imperfect.
- Mayavadi philosopher's policy or system is ascending policy. I want to understand the Absolute Truth by exercising my mental power - that is called ascending process or inductive process. But our process is deductive process.
- Subject which is beyond their understanding by experimental knowledge, and if they try to understand it by the same experimental knowledge, that means confusion. This has to be understood by descending process of disciplic succession.
- Our process is avaroha pantha, descending process, and the Mayavadi philosopher's policy or system is ascending policy. I want to understand the Absolute Truth by exercising my mental power - that is called ascending process, or inductive process.
The Perfection of Avaroha-panthā
Rather than exhausting oneself through mental gymnastics, a wise person accepts the established truth. Śrīla Prabhupāda emphasizes that the descending process (avaroha-panthā) is effortless and perfect because it involves receiving facts directly from the infallible authority of the Vedas.
- Vedic knowledge is to receive knowledge by descending process, knowledge coming from authority. That, that you will find in the Bhagavad-gita, Fourth Chapter: evam parampara praptam imam rajarsayo viduh.
- Vedic process is not to acquire knowledge by ascending process, inductive process. Vedic knowledge is to receive knowledge by descending process, knowledge coming from authority.
- This process - hearing from higher authorities - is called the deductive, or descending, process of knowledge. It is the only authorized way to learn transcendental knowledge. By this method alone is eternal truth transmitted.
- Our process is descending process. We are not trying to understand by the ascending process. Inductive or deductive. We accept the statements of the Vedas. Therefore we haven't got to make much effort to understand the thing.
The Paramparā System
The descending process is practically applied through the disciplic succession. Śrīla Prabhupāda clarifies that perfect knowledge originates with Lord Kṛṣṇa and flows downward through an unbroken chain of spiritual masters, ensuring the message remains pure and unadulterated.
- That is the way of explaining the Vedic knowledge (it is disseminated by authorities like Sukadeva Gosvami), technically known as the parampara system, or descending process.
- One must follow the avaroha-pantha, the process of descending knowledge. Therefore one must accept the parampara system. And the best parampara is that which extends from Krsna.
- Spiritual master means one who has heard correctly from his Spiritual Master. In this way, ultimately it goes to Krishna, the Supreme Spiritual Master. There is no possibility of understanding the Vedic knowledge without this descending process.
- Transcendental knowledge has to be accepted by the descending process of disciplic succession as Brahma presents the knowledge of Krsna in the Brahma-samhita.
Conclusion
In conclusion, Śrīla Prabhupāda establishes that the approach one takes to acquiring knowledge determines their spiritual success. The ascending process—relying on personal research, inductive logic, and the speculation of the imperfect mind—is an exercise in vanity that inevitably ends in confusion. The Absolute Truth cannot be conquered by the tiny human brain. Therefore, the only viable method for understanding the spiritual reality is the descending process, or avaroha-panthā. By abandoning the pride of independent research and submissively hearing from the paramparā—the unbroken chain of bona fide spiritual masters originating from Kṛṣṇa Himself—a sincere student receives the eternal truth effortlessly. This descending process protects the transcendental message from being contaminated by human imperfection, allowing the conditioned soul to successfully bypass the limitations of material logic and become firmly situated on the absolute platform.
