Contamination of the Material World
The material world is compared to an ocean of contamination where the living entity struggles for existence. Śrīla Prabhupāda explains that this contamination stems from the three modes of material nature—goodness, passion, and ignorance. Just as pure rainwater becomes muddy upon touching the ground, the pure spirit soul becomes conditioned by contact with matter. However, by taking shelter of Kṛṣṇa consciousness, one can remain unaffected, like a vaccinated person in an epidemic.
The Pervasiveness of Contamination
No one in the material world is free from contamination. Śrīla Prabhupāda points out that even the mode of goodness, which is superior to passion and ignorance, is still a form of bondage. Every activity, whether it be charity or philanthropy, is flawed if devoid of God consciousness. The living entity, originally pure, becomes covered by lust, anger, and desire, forcing them to transmigrate from one body to another.
- Generally, in the material world, whatever knowledge we get is contaminated by the three modes of material nature.
- Even if we are contaminated by the quality of goodness of this material world, that is also contaminated. That is also cause of our entanglement.
- Any activity, good or bad, performed in this material world - they are all contaminated, faulty actions because of material association. The foolish conditioned soul may think that he is offering charity by opening hospitals.
- The contamination of the material world is going on, sattva-guna, rajo-guna, tamo-guna. If you contaminate with the tamo-guna, then you must suffer. If you contaminate rajo-guna, you must get disease.
The Antiseptic Vaccine
How can one survive in such a polluted environment? Śrīla Prabhupāda offers the "antiseptic vaccine" of Kṛṣṇa consciousness. By chanting the mahā-mantra and accepting prasādam, a devotee builds immunity against the material modes. This process allows one to live in the material world without being of it, effectively neutralizing the sinful reactions that would otherwise accumulate.
- Suppose there is some epidemic in the city, and one has taken the antiseptic vaccine of measure. He's not affected. Similarly this Krsna consciousness is the antiseptic method to become free from the contamination of this material world.
- The material world is full of contaminations, and one who is immunized by accepting prasadam of the Lord is saved from the attack, whereas one who does not do so becomes subjected to contamination.
- Since a devotee constantly chants the Hare Krsna mantra, no contamination of the material world can touch him. He is, therefore, actually purified.
- Lord Caitanya has recommended constant chanting of the name of the Lord for protection from all contamination of the material world.
Utilization for the Lord
Renunciation does not mean rejecting the world entirely, but using it for Kṛṣṇa. Śrīla Prabhupāda explains the principle of yukta-vairāgya—using everything in relation to the Lord. When wealth, talent, and resources are employed in the Lord's service, they lose their contaminating influence. This ambition to serve Kṛṣṇa is the secret to remaining unpolluted.
- If we want to be aloof from the contamination of this material world, then everything, whatever we use, whatever we need, it must be in relation with Krsna. Then we can keep ourself aloof from the contamination. That is the liberated condition.
- The real question is how can we remain unpolluted by material contamination while in the material world. It was Rupa Gosvami who explained that we can remain uncontaminated while in the world if we simply make it our ambition to serve Krsna.
- Rupa Gosvami said, "Because the Mayavadis do not know that everything has a utilization for the service of the Lord, they take the world to be false and falsely think they are liberated from the contamination of the material world."
- Devotees always perform yajnas in different modes of devotional service, such as sravanam, kirtanam, etc., & these performances of yajnas keep them always aloof from all kinds of contamination of sinful association in the material world.
Transcendental Knowledge and Identity
The ultimate cure for contamination is knowledge of one's constitutional position. Śrīla Prabhupāda teaches that the soul is distinct from the body and is meant for the spiritual world. By cultivating this knowledge and understanding Kṛṣṇa's transcendental nature, one becomes eligible to return back to Godhead, leaving behind the miseries of material existence.
- It is also possible for the living entity to be liberated again when by cultivation of real knowledge he becomes completely freed from the contamination of the material world.
- If one forgets all his bodily relationships within this material world and becomes situated in his spiritual identity, it is said that one has been freed from all material contamination by the blazing fire of yogic samadhi, or ecstasy.
- One who knows Krsna at once becomes free from all contamination of the material world.
- We (sages) know well that persons who have become liberated by engagement in Your devotional service are no longer contaminated by the material modes of nature; thus they have become eligible to be promoted to the kingdom of God in the spiritual world.
Conclusion
Śrīla Prabhupāda concludes that Kṛṣṇa consciousness is the only means of deliverance from the clutches of the material world. By taking shelter of the Lord, who is Himself free from all contamination, the devotee transcends the three modes of nature. Whether in distress or happiness, the devotee remains fixed in service, knowing that this path leads directly to the eternal, uncontaminated spiritual sky.
