Connection with Women - Overcoming the Pillar of Sinful Life
In the material world, the strongest binding force is the attraction between male and female. Śrīla Prabhupāda explains that to make genuine spiritual progress, one must conquer this deep-rooted bodily attachment. Illicit connection with women is identified as one of the four primary pillars of sinful life. By strictly adhering to the regulative principles and adopting a life of true renunciation, a sincere spiritual practitioner can overcome this powerful illusion and awaken their original, pure consciousness.
The Pillar of Sinful Life
The foundation of spiritual life is built upon morality and self-control. Śrīla Prabhupāda warns that any illicit connection with women immediately destroys a person's finer spiritual qualities, making advancement in Kṛṣṇa consciousness impossible until this vice is abandoned.
- Four sinful principles, namely illegitimate connection with women, intoxication, gambling and unnecessary killing of animals.
- Illicit connection with woman, is sinful life. Unnecessarily killing animals, that is sinful life. Intoxication, that is sinful life. Gambling, that is also sinful life.
- The progressive religionists and those who are responsible human beings or those who do not want to spoil their valuable human lives should refrain from all the principles of irreligiosity, especially illicit connection with women.
- The fault of illicit connection with women is that it makes one lose all brahminical qualities.
The Strict Vows of Renunciation
To cultivate spiritual knowledge, the mind and brain must be clean and focused. Śrīla Prabhupāda emphasizes that the Vedic systems of brahmacarya (student life) and sannyāsa (the renounced order) are specifically designed to keep a practitioner completely free from the distractions of sexual connections.
- Brahmacaris should have no connection with women; they should live a life of celibacy and engage the mind in the study of Vedic literature for cultivation of spiritual knowledge. This is called svadhyayah.
- Student life, if one remains brahmacari, he becomes determined. His brain becomes very receptive. Therefore in the brahmacari system, complete celibacy, no connection with woman.
- A sannyasi cannot meet his wife again. That is renouncement. Renouncement means renouncing connection with woman, or renouncing sex life.
- What we have renounced? We have renounced... We are using the motorcar, we are using this machine, we are eating, we are sleeping in nice room - what is the renouncement? Only renouncement is no connection with woman.
Avoiding the Pitfalls of the Sahajiyās
Throughout history, hypocritical men have adopted the dress of advanced devotees while secretly maintaining sinful habits. Śrīla Prabhupāda points out that Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu set a severe and uncompromising standard to expose these sahajiyās and protect the purity of the Vaiṣṇava tradition.
- This chastisement (of Lord Caitanya) was given to Junior Haridasa as an example to future sahajiyas who might adopt the dress of the renounced order to imitate Rupa Gosvami and other bona fide sannyasis but secretly have illicit connections with women.
- So-called devotees of God would have exploited the example of Junior Haridasa to continue their habit of illicit connections with women unrestrictedly. Indeed, they still preach that such behavior is allowed for a Vaisnava. But it is strictly not allowed.
- They will show like that in a very advanced and vairagya and taking three times bath and everything, but they have got connection with at least three, four woman. This is their bhajana.
- If one is not liberated and listens to a relation of the rasa dance, he may remember his own mundane activities and illicit connections with some woman whose name may also be Radha.
The Path to Purity and Liberation
Liberation is not a cheap achievement; it requires profound internal purification. Śrīla Prabhupāda concludes that by strictly accepting the "medical treatment" of devotional service and intentionally avoiding illicit connections, a sincere soul attains the exalted status of a truly liberated person.
- Intoxication should be avoided. Animal killing should be avoided. Illicit connection with woman should be avoided. And gambling, speculation, that should be eliminated, avoided. Then you get the chance of becoming pure.
- By this process of medical treatment people become gradually free from the following four kinds of addictions of sins namely - (1) Illegitimate connection with women. (2) Habit of animal killing. (3) Addiction to intoxication habits. (4) Lure of gambling.
- One who is serious going back to home, back to Godhead - for such person, one should be niskincana, no connection with these material woman and money.
- If one can renounce woman's connection, then he's liberated man. That is very, very difficult.
Conclusion
In conclusion, the restriction against illicit connection with women is not a mundane moral imposition, but a profound spiritual necessity. As heavily stressed by the ācāryas, illicit sex is a foundational pillar of material illusion that completely destroys a person's brahminical qualities and spiritual receptivity. To conquer this formidable attachment, the Vedic culture establishes the strict celibate orders of brahmacarya and sannyāsa, where true renunciation is measured not by giving up food or shelter, but by the absolute cessation of sexual connections. Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu’s uncompromising dealings with Junior Haridāsa serve as an eternal warning against the sahajiyā mentality, which attempts to mix the pure dress of a Vaiṣṇava with the filthy habits of illicit life. Ultimately, to become a spotless paramahaṁsa and return back to Godhead, a sincere practitioner must utilize the powerful medical treatment of Kṛṣṇa consciousness to completely eradicate this vice, thereby achieving the rare and glorious status of a truly liberated soul.
