Cleansing the Dirty Things Within the Heart
Śrīla Prabhupāda teaches that the ultimate goal of all spiritual practice is to purify our consciousness and revive our eternal relationship with the Supreme Lord. Although Kṛṣṇa is intimately situated within us, our vision is clouded by lifetimes of material contamination. By engaging in pure devotional service, we can wash away these impurities and awaken the dormant love of Godhead resting within the heart.
The Supersoul Residing Within
We are never truly alone in our material journey. Śrīla Prabhupāda explains that the Supreme Personality of Godhead, in His localized feature as Paramātmā, accompanies the individual soul across all lifetimes. He sits within the core of the heart as the supreme witness, guide, and best friend of every living entity.
- According to the sruti-mantra (dva suparna sayuja sakhayah), the Lord is sitting within the heart of every living entity as suhrt, the best friend.
- Andantara-stha-paramanu-cayantara-stham (BS 5.35). The Lord resides within this universe, He resides within the hearts of all living entities, and He resides even within the atom.
- Isvara, means Supreme Lord, is sitting in everyone's heart. So He is witness. Whatever you are doing, He is witness. He is giving you facility to do whatever you like, but at the same time you may forget.
- My dear Aditi, engage in devotional service to the Supreme Personality of Godhead, who is the master of everything, who can subdue everyone's enemies, and who sits within everyone's heart.
The Fire of Material Existence
Due to contact with the material energy, the conditioned soul's heart becomes filled with artificial desires. Śrīla Prabhupāda vividly describes this condition as a blazing fire of anxiety and lust. These impurities—the accumulated dirt of countless births—prevent us from experiencing true peace and spiritual bliss.
- Everyone has blazing fire within the heart. That is the proof of material existence. Nobody is without anxieties. That blazing fire means anxieties, always.
- The real disease is within our heart. We have got a disease, heart disease. What is that? Kama, lusty desires.
- An inordinate desire for economic development is considered to be like straws and grains of sand within the heart. If one is overly engaged in material activity, the heart will always remain disturbed.
- We have accumulated many inauspicious things within our hearts due to our material contamination during the course of many, many births. Many, many births - not only this birth, but past births as well.
The Process of Cleansing
To extinguish this blazing fire, a potent spiritual remedy is required. Śrīla Prabhupāda confirms that by regularly hearing the messages of the Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam and constantly chanting the holy names of the Lord, all misgivings and dirty things within the heart are effectively washed away.
- Hare Krsna, Hare Krsna, Krsna Krsna, Hare Hare is the transcendental process for reviving this original pure consciousness. By chanting this transcendental vibration, we can cleanse away all misgivings within our hearts.
- By chanting the holy name of God gradually your dirty technique within the heart will be cleansed and you will see properly your constitutional position and then you will act accordingly and then your life will be happy and prosperous.
- We have got abhadrani, so many inauspicious things, within our heart. This can be cleansed simply by hearing the message of Krsna from Srimad-Bhagavatam, from Bhagavad-gita, from the lips of devotees.
- One must be freed from all the dirt accumulated within the heart due to fruitive activities performed one after another. One must wash off this dirt by practicing bhakti-yoga.
The Seed of Devotion
When the heart becomes a fertile, purified ground, true spiritual life can begin to grow. Śrīla Prabhupāda explains that the spiritual master plants the bhakti-latā-bīja (the seed of devotional service) within the heart of the disciple. Nourished by the water of hearing and chanting, this seed flourishes into a magnificent creeper.
- In many places devotional service has been compared to a creeper. One has to sow the seed of the devotional creeper, bhakti-lata, within his heart.
- The seed of Krsna consciousness is sown within the heart of the conditioned soul, and when one hears instruction from the spiritual master, the seed fructifies, and one's life is blessed.
- After getting the seed of devotional service, if one sows it within his heart and pours water on it by hearing and chanting, the seed grows into a big plant, and there are fruits and flowers which the living entity can enjoy, even in this material world.
Seeing Kṛṣṇa Everywhere
The ultimate result of a purified heart is the continuous vision of the Supreme Lord. Śrīla Prabhupāda beautifully illustrates that just as one constantly thinks of a loved one, a pure devotee whose heart is saturated with transcendental love always sees Kṛṣṇa present within.
- Anyone you love, you see always within your heart. Similarly, if you have love for God, Krsna, then you can see Krsna always. That is called yoga system.
- If you come to the temple and you get the impression of Radha-Krsna so nice and if you keep within you (your) heart... But that can be kept when you love. Just like if you love somebody, you always keep within your heart the form of your lover.
- The conclusion is that everyone sees God at every moment, but the atheist class, they do not accept that he is seeing God. He denies or telling lies that he is not seeing God. But a devotee of God, he sees God at every moment within his heart.
- As soon as the Krsna sun is arisen within one's heart, the darkness of materialistic speculations about the Absolute Truth and the living beings is at once cleared off.
Conclusion
Śrīla Prabhupāda masterfully outlines the journey of the soul from material bondage to pure spiritual vision. By recognizing the presence of Paramātmā within and acknowledging the severe disease of material desires that covers our consciousness, we can begin the crucial work of internal cleansing. Taking up the potent process of bhakti-yoga—specifically chanting the holy names and hearing transcendental literature—washes away the dirt of countless lifetimes. In this purified state, the seed of devotion blossoms, allowing the sincere Vaiṣṇava to experience the supreme perfection of seeing Kṛṣṇa constantly within the heart.
