Changing Our Consciousness - From Sense Gratification to Kṛṣṇa
The path to spiritual perfection is often misunderstood as requiring the total abandonment of one's life and duties. However, Śrīla Prabhupāda clarifies that the true essence of bhakti-yoga is simply an internal revolution: changing our consciousness from serving our own senses to serving the Supreme Personality of Godhead.
The Shift in Motivation
In material life, all energy is expended for personal enjoyment. Śrīla Prabhupāda explains that the core philosophy of Kṛṣṇa consciousness is to maintain one's active engagement in the world while completely shifting the motivation behind the work from personal sense gratification to the satisfaction of Kṛṣṇa.
- At the present moment our consciousness is that we are working for our own sense gratification. When this consciousness will be changed, that we work for satisfying Krsna, then our lives will be complete. You haven't got to change your work or position.
- Simply we have to change the consciousness. Everything we are now doing in the matter of sense gratification, we have to prepare ourself, we have to train ourself for the sense gratification of Krsna. That is Krsna consciousness.
- Simply you have to change the consciousness, that somebody is working for his sense gratification and somebody is working for Krsna's satisfaction. This is the difference. But after all, you have to work for satisfaction of somebody else.
- You have to change the consciousness. What you are doing? For whom you are doing? For yourself or for Krsna? This is Krsna consciousness. And that is the perfection of life.
- We are trying to change the consciousness. Krsna consciousness movement means that, that you earn as much as you like, but the enjoyer should be Krsna, not you. That is Krsna consciousness.
Changing Consciousness, Not Occupation
A common misconception is that spiritual life requires one to stop all material progress. Śrīla Prabhupāda emphasizes that one does not need to change their vocation, stop industry, or alter their external environment; they simply need to change the consciousness with which they perform their duties.
- It is prescribed that you can do anything. There is no harm. Whatever your business, or vocation, occupation, you are engaged, that has not to be changed. That has not to be changed. Simply your consciousness has to be changed.
- Do not misunderstand that by accepting Krsna consciousness everything will be stopped. No. Nothing will be stopped. Simply one has to change the consciousness.
- It is not that because one has to accept the Vedic culture, he has to stop industry or material progress. Not like that. Bhagavad-gita does not teach that. Simply to change the consciousness.
- What Krsna speaks, He speaks for all eternity; it does not change. It does not matter what our present occupation is or what Arjuna's occupation was - we only have to change our consciousness.
- If one works independently for Krsna, that is perfection. It is very simple. It is not difficult. Simply we have to change our consciousness.
The True Meaning of Liberation
Liberation is often abstractly defined, but in Kṛṣṇa consciousness, it is a practical reality. Śrīla Prabhupāda clarifies that mukti (liberation) does not mean acquiring a new type of body or becoming void; it simply means reviving one's original, eternal consciousness as a servant of Kṛṣṇa.
- Liberation means to get out of the blazing fire of this material existence. It is simply change of consciousness, that I am thinking in so many ways. But when you think that you are eternal servant of Krsna, that is your real, constitutional position.
- Liberation does not mean that when you get liberation - you have got now two hands - you will have four hands, like that, no. Liberation means change of consciousness.
- Mukti does not mean that after mukti one is finished, one becomes nirakara or another two hand grow. Not like that. It is a change of consciousness. That is called mukti. Real mukti means change of consciousness.
- It is the change of consciousness. The same man, if he changes his criminal consciousness, then he's no more subjected to go to the jail. Similarly, liberation means, if you become complete in Krsna consciousness, then you are liberated.
- If you change your consciousness that, "I have never been satisfied, happy, by giving service to the maya. Now let me serve Krsna," that is your liberation.
Protection in the Material World
The material world is a place of danger, but a change of consciousness provides ultimate immunity. Śrīla Prabhupāda points out that if one's mind is fully absorbed in Kṛṣṇa, they remain completely unaffected by the surrounding material energy, effectively living in the spiritual world (Vaikuṇṭha).
- If we are in Krsna consciousness, even if we are in the midst of mayic activities, it will not affect. So everything is there, but if you change your consciousness, then you are safe.
- In the material world if our consciousness is changed to Krishna then even here is vaikuntha consciousness.
- If you change your consciousness to Krsna consciousness, wherever you are, you are in Vaikuntha.
- So if I get out of this temporary creation and be situated in my own position, then there is no more pains and pleasure. It is simply pleasure. Therefore Krsna consciousness means to change the consciousness.
- We are going to Krsna consciousness means we are going to our eternal consciousness. We are changing from the temporary, bodily consciousness to the eternal consciousness. This is the sum and substance of Krsna consciousness.
The Remedy for Society
False bodily designations—such as "I am American" or "I am Hindu"—are the root cause of global conflict. Śrīla Prabhupāda concludes that the only way to achieve actual peace and uniformity in human society is to elevate everyone's consciousness to the spiritual platform.
- Simply by his changing the rubber stamp, "I am Hindu," "I am Muslim," "I am Christian," that does not make any benefit. Therefore our Movement is Krsna consciousness. We don't talk of any religion. The consciousness should be changed.
- We are trying to push on this movement, change the consciousness. Now our consciousness is polluted, muddy. Somebody is thinking, "I am Indian," somebody is thinking, "I am American," and they are fighting one another.
- Unless you come to the spiritual platform, there is no question of uniformity, peace, prosperity, nothing. Therefore our movement is - Change consciousness. Come to the spiritual platform, Krsna conscious. Then everything will be all right.
- We are anxious for peace. This is the process of peace; you change your consciousness. Don't accept anything for your sense gratification.
- The whole Krsna consciousness movement is to purify the bhava. Bhava. That is stated here. Parisuddha-bhava. We are not negativating everything. We are simply changing from material bhava to spiritual bhava. That's all.
Conclusion
As Śrīla Prabhupāda clearly explains, the philosophy of Kṛṣṇa consciousness is eminently practical because it does not demand the impossible cessation of all activities; it simply requires the purification of intent. As long as a living entity labors solely for their own sense gratification, they remain bound by the relentless laws of material nature, suffering repeated birth and death. However, the moment one changes their consciousness and decides to work exclusively for the satisfaction of the Supreme Lord, they are instantly liberated. This shift in consciousness cleanses the heart, neutralizes the effects of māyā, and transforms any environment—even the midst of the material world—into the spiritual realm of Vaikuṇṭha. By abandoning false bodily designations and embracing this eternal, spiritual consciousness, human society can finally achieve the uniform peace and unending happiness it so desperately seeks.
