Cannot Comprehend Kṛṣṇa Through Limited Knowledge
The Supreme Personality of Godhead cannot be measured by the limited mind of the conditioned living being. In these teachings, Śrīla Prabhupāda explains that Kṛṣṇa's greatness, energies, opulences, and spiritual world extend far beyond material calculation. The living entity may try to understand by speculation, logic, or imagination, but the Absolute Truth is not brought under the control of a small brain. Real understanding begins when one accepts the Lord's inconceivable power and hears from Vedic authority with humility.
Kṛṣṇa's Greatness Exceeds All Calculation
Kṛṣṇa's greatness cannot be limited by the categories of ordinary thought. He pervades the material world and remains beyond it, and even the vast universe is insignificant compared with His complete creation. Śrīla Prabhupāda points out that millions of universes were shown within Kṛṣṇa's mouth, a display that cannot be comprehended by finite living entities. If even material expansions are beyond full estimation, the spiritual world is still more impossible to measure by calculation.
- As far as we can conceive, the space which contains the universe is the greatest, but Krsna has shown millions of universes in His mouth. The greatness of God cannot be comprehended by the living entities, who are part and parcel of God.
- He (Krsna) pervades this material world and yet is beyond it. We cannot even comprehend this material world, which is insignificant compared to the spiritual world-so how can we comprehend what is beyond?
- It is not possible to comprehend the greatness of Krsna and His opulences.
- We should conclude that if one cannot comprehend the material expansions of the Supreme Personality of Godhead, one certainly cannot estimate the expansiveness of the spiritual world.
The Lord's Inconceivable Energy Must Be Accepted
The workings of the Lord cannot be reduced to ordinary mechanical explanation. Śrīla Prabhupāda emphasizes that the word “inconceivable” must be accepted because the living being's intelligence cannot grasp how everything is being done. A poor fund of knowledge may deny the Lord's original personal form when He expands everywhere, but such denial comes from limitation, not insight. Spiritual progress begins when one accepts that Kṛṣṇa's energies act beyond material comprehension.
- A poor fund of knowledge cannot comprehend the existence of an original personal form of the Lord when He is expanded in everything.
- How is everything being done? The word "inconceivable" has been used. It is not within the power of one's small brain to comprehend; unless one accepts the inconceivable power and energy of the Lord, one cannot make any progress.
- If Krsna cannot comprehend the limit of His own attraction and bliss, it is certainly not possible for us with our limited knowledge.
- As indicated in Srimad-Bhagavatam by Sukadeva Gosvami, we should not try to comprehend the greater mountainous areas of the universe merely by our calculations.
Great Personalities Also Meet the Limit
The inability to fully comprehend the Lord is not limited to ordinary people. Brahmā, though far superior to the demigods, could not comprehend the display of the Supreme Personality of Godhead. Bhīṣma could not understand why the Pāṇḍavas were placed in such acute distress, and the four Kumāras could not fully understand the Lord's profound words and intentions. These examples show that humility is required even among the most elevated souls.
- Brahma is not an ordinary conditioned soul. He is far, far superior to all the other demigods, and yet he could not comprehend the display of the Supreme Personality of Godhead.
- Lord Krsna put the Pandavas into a distressed condition so acute that even grandfather Bhisma could not comprehend how such distress could occur.
- The sages (the four Kumaras) tried with wide open ears to understand the words from the lips of the Supreme Lord, but although His speech was very concise and meaningful, the sages could not completely comprehend what He was saying.
- They (the four Kumaras) could not even comprehend the purport of the speech or what the Supreme Lord wanted to do. Nor could they understand whether the Lord was angry or pleased with them.
Speculation Cannot Reach the Absolute Truth
The Absolute Truth is not understood by stubborn speculation or impersonal assumptions. Śrīla Prabhupāda explains that Vedic literature must be accepted in good faith because it is the genuine source of knowledge about the Lord. Impersonalists cannot comprehend the Lord's personal dealings, senses, or the final destination of pure love of Godhead. The way forward is to hear submissively from Bhagavad-gītā and other Vedic sources rather than forcing the Lord into limited philosophical categories.
- The impersonalist philosophers, who wish to maintain that the Absolute Truth is without senses, cannot comprehend this (BG 9.26) verse of Bhagavad-gita.
- Unfortunately, the stubborn impersonalists cannot comprehend that the final spiritual destination, beyond the four Vedic goals (religiosity, economic development, sense gratification, and liberation) is absolutely pure and transcendental love of Godhead.
- We have to accept the Bhagavad-gita or any other Vedic literature in good faith. These Vedic literatures are the only source of knowledge about the Lord. We must understand that we cannot comprehend the Absolute Truth by the speculative process.
- When transcendental love of Krsna awakens in someone's heart, even a learned scholar cannot comprehend his activities.
Conclusion
Śrīla Prabhupāda call the living being to humility before Kṛṣṇa's unlimited greatness. The Supreme Lord, His energies, His speech, His opulences, and His spiritual world cannot be measured by limited knowledge or speculative reasoning. Even exalted personalities may be unable to comprehend the Lord's arrangements fully. Therefore the wise person hears from Vedic authority, accepts the inconceivable power of Kṛṣṇa, and approaches the Absolute Truth through faith, service, and devotion.
