Brahmā is Also a Creation of God
Śrīla Prabhupāda clarifies that although Lord Brahmā is the chief engineer of the universe, he is not the Supreme. Brahmā is a conditioned soul directly created and empowered by Lord Viṣṇu.
The Birth of Lord Brahmā
Lord Brahmā's birth is completely unique, as he was generated directly from the body of the Supreme Lord. At the beginning of creation, he was born on a lotus flower grown from the transcendental abdomen of Garbhodakaśāyī Viṣṇu. Because he was directly born from the Lord rather than a material mother, Brahmā is known as ajaḥ (unborn) and ātma-bhū.
- At the beginning of creation the Supreme Spirit entered the universe, and the first living being, Brahma, was born on a lotus flower grown from the transcendental abdomen of Visnu.
- From His (Garbhodakasayi Visnu) navel the stem of the lotus flower sprouted, and on the flower petals the birth of Brahma, or the master engineer of the universal plan, took place.
- The first living creature, Brahma, is called ajah because he did not take his birth from the womb of a mother materially born. He was directly born from the bodily expansion of the lotus flower of the Lord.
- Brahma is directly the son of the father and was not put into the womb of a mother. Therefore he is known as atma-bhu.
Brahmā as the Subordinate Creator
Though responsible for cosmic manifestation, Brahmā acts strictly under the Lord's supreme direction. He is not an independent creator, but an empowered deputy of the Supreme Personality of Godhead. All living entities are born from the Lord's energy through the agency of Brahmā, confirming that the ultimate creator and proprietor is the Supreme Lord.
- Brahma creates the different species of life all over the universe, which means that the Lord creates the whole manifestation either by Himself or through the agency of His authorized deputies.
- Brahma is also one of these living entities, but he is especially empowered by the Supreme Personality of Godhead. Although Brahma is supposed to be the creator of this universe, actually the Supreme Personality of Godhead is its ultimate creator.
- One should be intelligent enough to know that the Lord is the only proprietor of everything in the universe and that He is the original creator, the creator of Brahma.
- Brahma himself was born from the energy of the Lord, and all other living entities are born from the energy of the Lord through the agency of Brahma; none of them has any existence without being dovetailed with the Supreme Lord.
Enlightened from Within
Lord Brahmā required perfect knowledge to create, which the Supreme Lord imparted directly into his heart. By educating Brahmā from within, the Lord proves that the Absolute Truth is a Supreme Person, not dull matter. Because Brahmā received his Vedic intelligence directly from the Personality of Godhead, the Lord must be obeyed in all respects.
- According to Srimad-Bhagavatam, tene brahma hrda ya adi-kavaye: (SB 1.1.1) after the creation, the Supreme Person imparted Vedic knowledge within the heart of Brahma.
- The Absolute Truth, the Supreme Personality of Godhead, educated Lord Brahma from the heart (SB 1.1.1): tene brahma hrda ya adi-kavaye. Therefore the Absolute Truth cannot be dull matter; the Absolute Truth must be the Supreme Person Himself.
- By the grace of the Lord, who instructed him through the heart (tene brahma hrda), Lord Brahma could create a huge universe. Those who are actually pure devotees of the Lord are instructed by the Lord through the heart, where the Lord is always situated.
- It was the Lord who instructed Brahma in Vedic knowledge. That Personality of Godhead has to be obeyed in all respects. Anyone who wants to become freed from material entanglement must surrender unto Him, and this is confirmed in Bhagavad-gita.
The Lord's Transcendental Form Revealed
Pleased by Brahmā's sincere performance of bhakti-yoga, the Supreme Lord personally revealed His eternal, transcendental form. This divine vision was not imaginary, but an actual encounter with the Supreme Person. Such supernatural vision is bestowed only upon pure devotees, proving that the Absolute Truth possesses a factual, spiritual body.
- O King, the Personality of Godhead, being very much pleased with Brahma because of his nondeceptive penance in bhakti-yoga, presented His eternal and transcendental form before Brahma. And that is the objective goal for purifying the conditioned soul.
- In this verse it is clearly mentioned that the Lord is ajanah, or the Supreme Person, and that He was showing His transcendental form (atmano rupam) to Brahmaji while instructing him in the summarization of Srimad-Bhagavatam in four verses.
- Such descriptions (in Brahama-samhita) of the Lord's body are not imaginary; rather, they are the statements of those who have seen the Lord with their supernatural vision. This supernatural vision is bestowed upon devotees like Brahma.
- Undoubtedly the form of the Lord who was seen by Brahma must be transcendental, otherwise how could He simply look upon the creative energy without being touched.
Brahmā is Subordinate, Not Supreme
Impersonalists falsely attempt to equate Brahmā with the Supreme Lord because both represent the principle of "I." However, Śrīla Prabhupāda clarifies that while both are persons, the Supreme Lord is the predominator and Brahmā is the predominated servitor. Even exalted demigods like Lord Brahmā and Lord Śiva remain eternally subservient to the Supreme Personality of Godhead.
- The impersonalist puts forth the theory of oneness in the sense that Brahma, also being the same principle of "I" because he is an emanation from the I, the Absolute Truth, is identical with the Lord, the principle of I.
- The impersonal feature stressed by the less intelligent impersonalist school is refuted by pointing out that the predominator "I" is the Absolute Truth and that He is a person. The predominated "I," Brahma, is also a person, but he is not the Absolute.
- Even the great demigods like Brahma and Siva cannot be compared to the Supreme Lord. In fact, the Lord is worshiped by demigods such as Brahma and Siva (siva-virinci-nutam).
- No one can be equal to God, and no one can be above Him. Even Lord Brahma and Siva, the most exalted demigods, are subservient to Him and pay their respectful obeisances.
Conclusion
Śrīla Prabhupāda’s teachings dismantle the misconception that Lord Brahmā is the ultimate creator of the universe. Brahmā is a finite living entity—an empowered deputy—born directly from the transcendental body of Lord Viṣṇu. He could only perform his magnificent cosmic engineering because the Supreme Personality of Godhead enlightened him from within the heart, providing the necessary Vedic intelligence. While ignorant philosophers attempt to equate the creator and the created, pure devotees understand that the predominating Absolute Truth and the predominated servitor can never be the same. By rendering unalloyed devotional service through bhakti-yoga, Lord Brahmā achieved the ultimate perfection: the direct vision of the Supreme Lord's eternal form. Thus, true spiritual intelligence means recognizing the Supreme Lord as the master of all demigods and completely surrendering to His absolute authority.
