Bodily Designation - The Artificial Covering of the Soul
A central theme in Śrīla Prabhupāda's teachings is the necessity of overcoming "bodily designations." We live in a world obsessed with identity—national pride, religious affiliation, racial heritage, and gender roles. While society cherishes these labels, Śrīla Prabhupāda reveals them to be mere upādhis—artificial coverings that obscure the true self. To attain peace and spiritual realization, one must peel away these temporary layers and discover the eternal soul beneath.
The Illusion of "I am This"
Śrīla Prabhupāda tirelessly explains that our standard self-introductions are fundamentally flawed. When one says, "I am an American," or "I am a Hindu," they are referring to the body, not the self. These designations are accidental and temporary; a person who is an "American man" in this life could be a "Chinese woman" or even a "dog" in the next. Holding onto these labels is a symptom of impurity and ignorance.
- I am American," "I am Indian," "I am Chinese," "I am Russian," "I am Hindu," "I am Muslim," "I am Christian . . ." These are all designations due to this body. But actually I am neither American, neither Indian, nor Christian.
- Impure means we are thinking in bodily concept of life. "I am Indian," "I am American," "I am Hindu," "I am Muslim," "I am Christian," "I am white," "I am black," these are all designations of the body. We have to transcend the position of the body.
- God is neither Moslem nor Hindu nor Christian - He is God. Nor are we to be considered Hindu, Moslem or Christian. These are bodily designations. We are all pure spirit, part and parcel of the Supreme.
- Hindu, Muslim, Christian, Buddhist, this, that or white, black, so many ways, according to the designation of the body you have created dharma, or characteristics. That is inferior quality.
The Barriers to Unity
These designations are not harmless; they are the walls that divide humanity. Śrīla Prabhupāda points out that modern civilization thrives on these divisions, creating segregated societies and fueling conflict. Leaders who encourage people to identify with their bodily labels are, in Śrīla Prabhupāda's words, enemies of human civilization because they block the path to spiritual realization and universal brotherhood.
- The modern civilization is based on bodily designation - American, India, German - but our proposition is to become free from these artificial designations, and unless one becomes free from these artificial designations there can't be any God-consciousness.
- Even in faraway countries the Europeans are there, the Indians are there, the Africans are there. But, on account of this bodily designation, separated-European quarter, Indian quarter, this quarter, that quarter, this designation.
- We should not remain in ignorance like cats and dogs, thinking, "I am this body, I am American, I am Indian, I am brahmana, I am ksatriya, I am Hindu, I am Muslim," and so on. These are all bodily designations.
- It is the human life that offers the opportunity to become Krsna conscious, but these rascals are stopping that opportunity by alluring people to bodily designations, and therefore they are the greatest enemies of human civilization.
The Spiritual Platform
Kṛṣṇa consciousness offers a platform that transcends these material boundaries. In the eyes of a devotee, there is no distinction based on gender, birth, or nationality. Śrīla Prabhupāda asserts that the spirit soul is pure and unconnected to these labels. Whether one is a man or a woman, a brāhmaṇa or a śūdra, the only true identity is "I am Kṛṣṇa's."
- I am pure spirit soul. I am not this body and I am not these bodily designations that so many people have foisted upon me. My family and friends, my country, this that. We should think - I am Krsna's. I'm not Russian, I am not Hindu, I'm simply Krsna's.
- Either girl or boy devotees may deliver lecture if they choose to do. We have no such distinction of bodily designations, male or female. Krishna Consciousness is on the spiritual platform.
- A devotee never takes the part of a particular party; therefore he is carefree. He is never pained because he is free from all designations; he knows that his body is a designation, so if there are some bodily pains, he is free.
- When influenced by the modes of material nature, a living entity forgets this relationship and thinks in terms of different species of life; but when he again comes to his original consciousness, he does not observe such bodily designations.
Cleansing the Mirror
How does one become free from such deeply ingrained identities? Śrīla Prabhupāda admits it is not an easy task. However, he prescribes the potent method of hearing kṛṣṇa-kathā and chanting the holy names. This process, described by Lord Caitanya as ceto-darpaṇa-mārjanam (cleansing the mirror of the heart), wipes away the dust of bodily designation, revealing the shining self within.
- Not feeling, practically, training that I am spirit soul, I am eternal part and parcel of the Lord. When you come to this position, this is called sarvopadhi-vinirmuktam. Freed from all designation. These are, the bodily identification is designation.
- So Caitanya Mahaprabhu recommends that... Caitanya Maha... This is the shastric, Vedic culture, that we have to purify ourselves from the bodily designation. That is called ceto-darpana-marjanam.
- Anyone, to not identify with this bodily designation, it is not very easy task. But still, if we go on hearing the krsna-katha, as we have begun here, it will be very easy.
- It is not a very easy task for anyone to end his identification with these bodily designations. But still, if we continue hearing the Krsna katha, it will be very easy. Make an experiment.
Conclusion
The journey of self-realization involves shedding the artificial layers of "I" and "Mine." By understanding that national, religious, and gender identities are merely bodily designations, and by engaging in the purifying process of Kṛṣṇa consciousness, we can attain the state of sarvopādhi-vinirmuktam—freedom from all designations—and experience the true equality of the spirit.
