Bodily Consciousness - The Root of All Suffering
The foundational teaching of the Vedic scriptures is the distinction between the soul and the body. However, the conditioned soul is deeply entrenched in "bodily consciousness"—the overwhelming conviction that "I am this material form." Śrīla Prabhupāda identifies this misconception as the root cause of all conflict, suffering, and karmic bondage. To become Kṛṣṇa conscious means to wake up from this dream of bodily identification and reclaim one's eternal spiritual identity.
Defining the Illusion
Śrīla Prabhupāda explains that bodily consciousness is a state of ignorance where the living entity identifies with the outer covering rather than the self within. This manifests as national, racial, or species-based designations. Whether one thinks "I am a human," "I am a dog," "I am German," or "I am Indian," the underlying principle is the same: valid spiritual identity is lost in the temporary material designation.
- Generally people are anatmavit, bodily conscious, mass of people or class of people also. Hardly you will find a person at the present moment atmavit, self-realized. Everyone is, "I am this body." "I am Indian," "I am American," - I am Canadian.
- I am thinking, "I am Indian," you are thinking you are German, and the dog is thinking, "I am dog," and cat is thinking, "I am cat." So this bodily consciousness, bodily concept of life, will keep us conditioned within the material nature.
- Bodily consciousness means sensual consciousness. Above that, there is mental consciousness, speculative, philosophical, poetic. Above that, intellectual consciousness. And Krsna consciousness - above intellectual consciousness.
- The process of bodily self-consciousness - the misunderstanding that I am this material body and mind and, for that matter, that I am part and parcel of this material world and that everything in this material world is thus an object for my enjoyment.
The Source of Suffering
Why is the world full of anxiety? Śrīla Prabhupāda points to modern education and culture, which reinforce bodily consciousness. When society focuses solely on the comfort of the body—which is destined to die—suffering inevitably increases. Furthermore, acting on the bodily platform binds one to the law of karma. Every action performed with the conception "I am the doer" produces a reaction that the soul must endure.
- Because people are being educated to become more bodily conscious, therefore their sufferings are increasing. Sufferings are increasing. And if you reduce this bodily concept of life, then suffering also will be reduced.
- The material world means bodily consciousness: how to keep the body in comfortable. But that is not possible. Body means misery. You cannot keep it comfortable.
- As soon as we work on the level of bodily consciousness we become bound by the reaction of our work. But when we work through spiritual consciousness, we are not bound either by pious activities or by vicious activities. That is the technique.
- The difference between a person in Krsna consciousness and a person in bodily consciousness is that the former is attached to Krsna, whereas the latter is attached to the results of his activities.
Transcending the Body
The goal of human life is to move from temporary consciousness to eternal consciousness. Śrīla Prabhupāda describes the liberated soul as ātmavit—one who knows the self. This transformation is not theoretical; it requires a practical shift in identity. By adopting the vānaprastha order or simply by practicing Kṛṣṇa consciousness, one can attain the paramahaṁsa stage, where the duality of the body no longer affects the mind.
- We are going to Krsna consciousness means we are going to our eternal consciousness. We are changing from the temporary, bodily consciousness to the eternal consciousness. This is the sum and substance of Krsna consciousness.
- If one understands that "I am not this body; I am spirit soul," he is called atmavit, or he is liberated. He is not bodily conscious platform. There are three platforms of identification with self.
- In this way (following vanaprastha stage) both husband and wife can advance in spiritual consciousness. This advanced stage is called the paramahamsa stage, and once it is obtained, both husband and wife can be actually liberated from bodily consciousness.
- We are trying to give this information (next life one should have better or eternal body) to the human society, but they are so callous, they are so bodily conscious, they are not very much serious about it.
Unity and Tolerance
The proof of freedom from bodily consciousness is seen in the behavior of advanced devotees. Śrīla Prabhupāda highlights how Kṛṣṇa consciousness unites people of all nationalities, as they forget their bodily designations. He also cites great souls like Jesus Christ and Jaḍa Bharata, who tolerated extreme bodily suffering without protest because they were completely fixed in their spiritual identity.
- Anyone who is coming to Krsna consciousness in any country, they are forgetting their bodily consciousness. Just like in our society we have got members from different parts of the world.
- I am very glad to see that the small children from all other countries, and Indian, Bengalis, all together, forgetting their bodily consciousness. That is the greatest achievement in this movement, that everyone forgets the bodily conception of life.
- Sleeping, eating, mating or defending. It is simply due to my bodily consciousness these things are required. But when one is actually spiritually advanced, he has no such appreciation. Just like Lord Jesus Christ, he was crucified, but he never protested.
- In this way the King criticized Jada Bharata with sarcastic words, yet despite being criticized in this way, Jada Bharata had no bodily conception of the situation. He knew that he was not the body, for he had attained his spiritual identity.
Conclusion
Bodily consciousness is a cage that traps the soul in a cycle of birth, death, and sectarian conflict. Śrīla Prabhupāda offers the key to unlock this cage: the simple yet profound realization that we are eternal servants of Kṛṣṇa. By shifting our focus from the maintenance of the body to the satisfaction of the Soul of all souls, we enter the realm of true freedom and universal brotherhood.
