Blissful Life - The Goal of Human Existence
The desire for a blissful life is universal. From the smallest ant to the highest demigod, every living entity is searching for happiness. However, Śrīla Prabhupāda explains that this search is often misdirected. Trying to find eternal bliss in a temporary material body is like trying to extract water from a desert. Real blissful life is a spiritual reality, a state of existence that is eternal, full of knowledge, and overflowing with transcendental pleasure. Kṛṣṇa consciousness is the science of reviving this dormant, blissful nature.
The Futility of Material Happiness
Śrīla Prabhupāda teaches that material life cannot be blissful because it is riddled with the four miseries: birth, death, old age, and disease. Even if one achieves a high standard of living or goes to the heavenly planets, the happiness is temporary and ultimately frustrating. True bliss belongs to the spirit soul and cannot be found in the interaction of material senses.
- Actually we want happiness, blissful life. That is not possible in the material world. That is in the spiritual world. That is the aim. So every human being should be given chance. That is real education. That is called samskara.
- As long as one has a material body, one is understood to be impure. In such an impure, material condition, one cannot enjoy a truly blissful life, although everyone seeks it.
- We want unending blissful life, but it is not possible in the material world That happiness is in the spiritual world.
- The fact is that in material life, whether one is miserable or happy, both conditions are miserable. If one actually wants happy, blissful life, one must become Krsna conscious and constantly engage in the transcendental loving service of the Lord.
The Nature of Spiritual Bliss
What is real blissful life? It is not merely the absence of pain or a void (zero), as some philosophers claim. It is a positive, dynamic state of sac-cid-ānanda—eternity, knowledge, and bliss. In the spiritual world, life is a festival of constant service to the Lord. This bliss is ever-increasing (ānandāmbudhi-vardhanam) and far surpasses any pleasure found in the material sphere.
- You are spirit soul, you cannot live peacefully in this material world. This is foreign. But as soon as you enter into the spiritual world, your life is eternal, blissful and full of knowledge, real peace. Tyaktva deham punar janma naiti.
- Brahman means spiritual or eternal; both the impersonalist and the devotee seek eternal blissful life. In any case, it is advised that one become perfect.
- Even if one goes to the topmost planet, one cannot achieve eternal life. Only by arriving in Vaikunthaloka can one live an eternally blissful life.
- When he's actually Krsna conscious, he's transcendental to this gross and subtle body. He attains a spiritual body, which is never to be finished - eternal, blissful life.
The Process: Devotional Service
To attain this blissful state, one does not need to speculate or perform severe austerities. The method is simple: engaging the senses in the service of the Lord. By chanting the holy name, hearing kṛṣṇa-kathā, and following the regulative principles, one cleanses the heart of material contamination. Śrīla Prabhupāda assures us that this process immediately situates the devotee on the transcendental platform.
- By working to please the Lord by engaging his senses in the Lord's loving service, the devotee is immediately situated on the transcendental platform, and he enjoys unlimited blissful life.
- Unless one hears krsna-katha from a realized soul like Sukadeva Gosvami, one cannot relish the nectar of krsna-katha, which puts an end to all material fatigue, and enjoy the blissful life of transcendental existence.
- Srimad-Bhagavatam (SB 5.5.1) recommends: One must practice austerity so that his existential position will be purified and he will achieve unlimited blissful life.
- If one wants the uncontaminated pleasure of blissful life, he must engage himself in the transcendental loving service of the Lord.
Bliss Here and Now
One does not have to wait for death to experience this bliss. Śrīla Prabhupāda points to the practical example of his disciples. They are chanting, dancing, and taking prasādam in a "jolly mood." This visible happiness is proof that the process works. Kṛṣṇa consciousness brings the blissful atmosphere of Vaikuṇṭha down to this earth, allowing anyone to participate in the eternal life of the soul immediately.
- Anyone can visit our Temple and see how our students are in blissful life. Naturally they are in jolly mood by chanting, dancing, and taking Prasadam.
- Actual blissful life, manifested in genuine spiritual laughing, crying and dancing, is the symptom of real advancement in Krsna consciousness, which can be achieved by a person who always voluntarily engages in the transcendental loving service of the Lord.
- As you are engaged actually in spiritual life, you won't feel fatigued. You'll be fearless, and your life will be always blissful. These are the symptoms.
- For a transcendental, blissful life, chant the Hare Krsna mantra, come worship the holy place of Vrndavana, and always engage in the service of the Lord, of the spiritual master and of the Vaisnavas.
Conclusion
The human form of life is a rare opportunity to stop the cycle of suffering and reclaim our heritage of blissful life. By following the authorized path of Kṛṣṇa consciousness, we can transcend the miseries of the material world and enter the eternal realm of happiness, both in this life and the next.
