Becoming Empowered by God
The history of the universe is shaped by individuals who possess extraordinary abilities, but Śrīla Prabhupāda explains that this power is not their own. It is a specific investment of energy from the Supreme Personality of Godhead. Whether it is the power to create the universe, rule the earth, or spread the message of Godhead, the source is always the Lord. This article explores the nature of the śaktyāveśa-avatāra, the different categories of empowerment, and the qualifications required for a devotee to become an instrument of the Divine.
Nature of the Empowered Incarnation (Śaktyāveśa-avatāra)
Śrīla Prabhupāda defines a śaktyāveśa-avatāra as a living entity (jīva-tattva) who is specifically empowered by the Lord to act on His behalf. This is distinct from a viṣṇu-tattva incarnation, who is the Lord Himself. Śrīla Prabhupāda clarifies that while ordinary living beings have minute power, an empowered soul acts with the direct backing of the Supreme.
- A living entity especially empowered to act on behalf of the Lord is called vibhuti, whereas the visnu-tattva incarnations of the Lord, such as the Matsya avatara (kesava dhrta-mina-sarira jaya jagad-isa hare), are called vibhava.
- Lord Jesus was jivatattva. He is not Visnu tattva. When a jiva tattva becomes specifically empowered by the Lord, he is called saktyavesa avatara.
- Living entities are also part and parcel of Lord Visnu, but they are not as powerful; therefore when a living entity descends as an incarnation of Visnu, he is especially empowered by the Lord.
- When God's part and parcel is especially empowered, he is called saktyavesa-avatara.
Specific Powers for Specific Functions
Empowerment is not generic; it is granted for specific functions. Śrīla Prabhupāda cites examples such as Lord Brahmā (empowered for creation), King Pṛthu (empowered for ruling), and the Kumāras (empowered for knowledge). Each of these great souls displays a particular opulence of the Supreme Lord to execute their duty.
- Brahma is also one of these living entities, but he is especially empowered by the Supreme Personality of Godhead. Although Brahma is supposed to be the creator of this universe, actually the Supreme Personality of Godhead is its ultimate creator.
- Maharaja Prthu is an incarnation of Visnu, yet he is a great devotee of Lord Visnu. Although an empowered incarnation of Lord Visnu, he is nonetheless a living entity. As such, he must be a devotee of the Supreme Personality of Godhead.
- The Kumaras are empowered with transcendental knowledge. Sri Narada is empowered with devotional service. Maharaja Prthu is an empowered incarnation with executive function.
- The Vedas are expanded by many branches and subbranches by great devotees and empowered incarnations of the Lord like Vyasa, Narada, Sukadeva Gosvami, the Kumaras, Kapila, Prahlada, Janaka, Bali and Yamaraja.
Empowerment to Spread the Holy Name
A unique category of empowerment is required for preaching the holy name of the Lord. Śrīla Prabhupāda frequently quotes the maxim kṛṣṇa-śakti vinā nahe tāra pravartana, explaining that without being specifically empowered by God, no one can spread the Kṛṣṇa consciousness movement worldwide. This applies to religious founders like Lord Buddha and Jesus Christ, as well as the modern preachers of the saṅkīrtana movement.
- As stated in the Caitanya-caritamrta (CC Antya 7.11), krsna-sakti vina nahe tara pravartana: Unless a devotee is specifically empowered by God, he cannot preach the holy name of the Lord all over the world. This is an explanation of the word avesa-rupa.
- It is said in the sastra (CC Antya 7.11), krsna-sakti vina nahe tara pravartana: one cannot distribute the holy names of the Hare Krsna maha-mantra unless he is empowered by the Supreme Personality of Godhead.
- Any living being acting as the incarnation of Lord Visnu is thus empowered by Lord Visnu to preach the bhakti cult. Such a person can act like Him and defeat demons by arguments and preach the bhakti cult exactly according to the principles of sastra.
- When a jiva tattva becomes specifically empowered by the Lord, he is called saktyavesa avatara. Lord Buddha and Lord Jesus Christ were in this group of saktyavesa avatara.. But they were not in conditioned state when they appeared; they came to teach.
Qualification to be Empowered
Who gets this power? Śrīla Prabhupāda teaches that the Lord awards this ability not based on material qualifications, but on the devotee's surrender and willingness to serve. A sincere devotee who is engaged twenty-four hours a day in service can be empowered by the Lord regardless of their situation.
- A sincere devotee can therefore be empowered by the Lord regardless of his situation. In the preceding verse (CC Madhya 19.134) from the Bhakti-rasamrta-sindhu, Srila Rupa Gosvami has described how he was personally empowered by the Lord.
- To be empowered by the Supreme Personality of Godhead, one has to qualify himself. This means that one must engage twenty-four hours daily in the loving devotional service of the Lord.
- This ability is also awarded by God according to one's willingness to render service unto God. One must be voluntarily willing to render service unto the Lord, and He will empower the doer in proportion to his surrender unto the lotus feet of the Lord.
- One cannot do anything unless he is enlightened and empowered by the Lord. The Lord says in Bhagavad-gita mattah smrtir jnanam apohanam ca.
Conclusion
The concept of being empowered by God reveals that the Supreme Lord is the only doer; the living entity is merely an instrument. Śrīla Prabhupāda explains that when a devotee surrenders their independence and desires to serve the Lord's mission, the Lord invests them with His own potency. This transforms an ordinary soul into a powerful force for good, capable of deliverance, creation, or ruling the world. Therefore, the goal of a devotee is not to seek power for themselves, but to qualify themselves through surrender so that they may be used by the Divine.
