Because of Caitanya - The Munificence of the Golden Avatāra
The Supreme Personality of Godhead descends to the material world for various reasons in different ages, but His appearance as Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu is unparalleled in its generosity. Śrīla Prabhupāda's teachings intricately explain that because of Lord Caitanya, the highest, most confidential love of Godhead—previously hidden and difficult to attain—has been freely distributed to the most fallen souls of Kali-yuga.
The Auspicious Appearance in Navadvīpa
The birth of the Supreme Lord is always accompanied by extraordinary cosmic and social events. Śrīla Prabhupāda describes how the appearance of Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu in Navadvīpa immediately inspired immense joy and charitable acts among the pure devotees, and brought unprecedented honor to His parents, Jagannātha Miśra and Mother Śacī.
- Advaita Acarya was actually interested in distributing charity because of Lord Caitanya’s birth at the time of the lunar eclipse. People could not understand, however, why Advaita Acarya was giving such a great variety of things in charity.
- He (Advaita Acarya) did so not because of the lunar eclipse but because of the Lord’s (Caitanya’s) taking birth at that moment. He distributed charity exactly as Vasudeva did at the time of Lord Krsna’s appearance.
- Jagannatha Misra was honored by everyone on the earth and was supplied with all necessities. Similarly, mother Saci saw many demigods in outer space offering prayers to her because of Lord Caitanya Mahaprabhu’s presence in her womb.
- In the Nadia district the best place is Navadvipa because Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu appeared there to inaugurate the performance of the sacrifice of chanting the Hare Krsna maha-mantra.
The Most Munificent Incarnation
No other incarnation has given spiritual mercy so freely. Śrīla Prabhupāda highlights that Śrīla Rūpa Gosvāmī specifically glorified Lord Caitanya as mahā-vadānya because of His willingness to distribute the pure love of Kṛṣṇa without considering the qualifications of the recipients, simply through the chanting of the holy names.
- Caitanya Mahaprabhu has been called by Srila Rupa Gosvami "the most munificent avatara" because He distributes love of Krsna free of charge.
- In this verse (CC Madhya 19.53), Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu is described (by Rupa Gosvami) as maha-vadanya, the most munificent of charitable persons, because He gives Krsna so easily that one can attain Krsna simply by chanting the Hare Krsna maha-mantra.
- Because of His protecting and maintaining this world in the present Kali-yuga, Lord Caitanya Mahaprabhu is known as Visvambhara, which refers to one who feeds the entire world.
- Because of His full independence, Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu sometimes behaved like a common man and sometimes manifested His godly opulence.
Teaching by Strict Example
Although He is the Supreme Lord, Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu accepted the strict rules of the renounced order to guide the general populace. Śrīla Prabhupāda explains that because He wanted to establish a flawless standard for spiritual life, the Lord observed severe strictures, expressed anger at deviations, and physically traveled to holy places as an example for all to follow.
- Should it be thought that Sri Caitanya made statements that are contradictory (because Caitanya disapproved of the acceptance of the sannyasa order in this Kali-yuga but He Himself took sannyasa and His brother Visvarupa did so)? No, actually He did not.
- Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu expressed anger because He wanted to teach all other sannyasis that they should not give up the staff before attaining the platform of paramahamsa.
- Because His (Lord Caitanya's) mind was Vrndavana, all the pastimes of Radha and Krsna were taking place within Himself. Nonetheless, just to teach people, He visited bhauma-vrndavana, Vrndavana-dhama in this material world.
- Because of the Lord's strict order, no living being could take the water. Some of His intimate devotees, however, would take it by some trick.
Extreme Humility and Gentle Behavior
To perfectly play the role of a devotee, Lord Caitanya exhibited unparalleled humility and gentleness. Śrīla Prabhupāda notes that He would physically block His ears if anyone dared to address Him as the Supreme Lord. Furthermore, because His behavior was so exceptionally sweet, even those who were defeated by Him in profound philosophical debates felt no enmity toward Him.
- Whenever Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu was addressed as being as good as Krsna, He blocked His ears with His hands, denying His identity with Krsna, because He was playing the part of a devotee.
- When Advaita Acarya danced in that way, Lord Caitanya felt ecstatic love for Krsna, and because of His separation, the waves and flames of love increased.
- The Lord defeated all kinds of scholars in discourses about all the scriptures, yet because of His gentle behavior, none of them were unhappy.
- The words mahaprabhura mukhe - from the mouth of Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu - are significant because Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu first heard the story of Madhavendra Puri from His spiritual master, Sripada Isvara Puri - See Madhya-lila, Chapter Four, verse 18.
Conclusion
In conclusion, understanding the reasons behind the actions of Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu is essential for grasping the depth of His mercy. Śrīla Prabhupāda masterfully reveals that whether He was distributing charity through His devotees, exhibiting strictness as a sannyāsī, or blocking His ears in perfect humility, everything was done because of His boundless compassion for the conditioned souls. By taking shelter of Lord Caitanya and following His exemplary behavior, anyone can easily attain the supreme destination of love of God in this current age.
