Balarāma's Manifestations - The Plenary Expansions of the Lord
The Supreme Personality of Godhead, Lord Kṛṣṇa, enjoys His eternal pastimes while simultaneously expanding Himself to create, maintain, and govern the vast material and spiritual universes. Śrīla Prabhupāda's teachings intricately explain that this unimaginable cosmic orchestration is carried out through Lord Balarāma. As Kṛṣṇa's first expansion, Balarāma is the energetic source of all subsequent incarnations, the foundation of the material cosmos, and the ultimate savior of the conditioned souls.
The Original Expansions
The science of Godhead involves understanding the hierarchy of divine expansions. Śrīla Prabhupāda establishes that Balarāma is the very first vaibhava-prakāśa manifestation. From Balarāma expands the original quadruple forms (Saṅkarṣaṇa, Pradyumna, etc.), and from them expand the forms of Viṣṇu who directly supervise and maintain the entire cosmic creation.
- Krsna's first expansion is Balarama, a portion of whom is manifested as Sankarsana, who then expands as Pradyumna. In this way so many expansions take place - CC Intro.
- Sri Balarama is a vaibhava-prakasa manifestation of Krsna. He is also manifested in the original quadruple expansions of Vasudeva, Sankarsana, Pradyumna and Aniruddha. These are prabhava-vilasa expansions with different emotions.
- Maha-sankarsana, Karanodakasayi, Garbhodakasayi, Ksirodakasayi, and Sesa. These five plenary portions are responsible for both the spiritual and material cosmic manifestations. In these five forms Lord Balarama assists Lord Krsna in His activities.
- Krsna's first manifestation is as Balarama and then Sankarsana, and after Sankarsana He is manifest as Pradyumna. In this way so many expansions take place.
The Cosmic Creation and Maintenance
The material universe does not function blindly; it requires supreme intelligence and a foundational resting place. Śrīla Prabhupāda clarifies that Lord Balarāma serves as both the material and efficient cause of the creation. Just as threads hold a cloth together, Balarāma maintains the universe, and at the time of total annihilation, He absorbs the entire cosmic manifestation back into Himself as Mahā-Viṣṇu.
- Uddhava continued, "Balarama and Krsna are the original Personalities of Godhead, from whom the cosmic manifestation emanates. They are chief among all personalities. Each of Them is both the material and the efficient cause of this material creation."
- Vasudeva said, "You (Krsna and Balarama) are the resting place of this cosmic manifestation. You are its creator, and You are also its creative ingredients."
- He (Balarama) maintains the whole cosmic manifestation exactly as horizontal and vertical threads hold the weaving of a cloth.
- Kurus said, "When the time for dissolution comes, You (Balarama) close up the whole cosmic manifestation within Yourself. At that time, nothing remains but Yourself lying in the Causal Ocean as Maha-Visnu."
Omnipresence Through Material Elements
Ignorant people mistake Kṛṣṇa and Balarāma for ordinary historical figures, but great devotees like Vasudeva and Akrūra recognize Their absolute omnipresence. Śrīla Prabhupāda explains that the Lord is the active principle within all matter. Because the five material elements are transformations of the Lord's energy, Kṛṣṇa and Balarāma are present everywhere as the Supersoul, empowering the sun, the moon, and the very gravity of the earth.
- Vasudeva said, "As the earth is present in everything, so You (Krsna and Balarama) are present throughout this material manifestation as the Supersoul. You are the supreme cause of all causes, the eternal principle."
- Akrura continued, "As the five material elements - earth, water, fire, air and sky - are distributed in everything manifested by different kinds of bodies, so You (Krsna and Balarama) alone enter the various bodies created by Your own energy."
- Vasudeva said, "Your (Krsna and Balarama) supreme energy, yogamaya, is acting in variegated manifestations, but because yogamaya is Your energy, You are therefore present in everything."
- Vasudeva said, "My dear Lord (Krsna and Balarama), the shining of the moon, the heat of fire, the rays of the sun, the glittering of the stars, and the electric lightning, which are all manifested as very powerful all are different manifestations of You."
The Spiritual Realm and the Spiritual Master
Lord Balarāma's manifestations are not limited to the material universes. Śrīla Prabhupāda reveals the deepest truth: the supreme spiritual abode of Goloka Vṛndāvana is also manifested by Balarāma. Furthermore, out of His boundless compassion, Balarāma continuously manifests Himself as the original spiritual master to guide the conditioned souls, most notably appearing as Lord Nityānanda to inaugurate the saṅkīrtana movement.
- This thinking energy (of Krsna) is described in Brahma-samhita, where it is said: the supreme abode, known as Goloka, is manifested like a lotus flower with hundreds of petals. Everything there is manifested by Ananta, the Balarama or Sankarsana form.
- Both the spiritual and material worlds are manifestations of the energy of acting, in which Krsna acts in the form of Sankarsana and Balarama.
- By His divine grace only one can approach the Supreme Lord Sri Krsna, and thus Sri Balarama is the mercy incarnation of the Lord, manifested as the spiritual master, the savior of the pure devotees.
- Thereafter mother Sacidevi saw the brothers Krsna and Balarama in Their manifestation of Lord Caitanya and Nityananda. Then the Lord delivered the two brothers Jagai and Madhai.
Conclusion
In conclusion, limiting one's understanding of Lord Balarāma to a mere historical figure is a profound spiritual mistake. Śrīla Prabhupāda teaches us that Balarāma is the ultimate energetic principle through which Lord Kṛṣṇa enacts all His cosmic and spiritual pastimes. Whether expanding as the puruṣa-avatāras to maintain the material universes, acting as the Supersoul within all elements, or descending as the original spiritual master to deliver the fallen, Lord Balarāma's countless manifestations are the very foundation of both creation and salvation.
