Avaiṣṇava - The Danger of Non-Devotee Association
The path of Kṛṣṇa consciousness is a delicate creeper that must be carefully protected from negative influences. To successfully cultivate love of God, a practitioner must learn to discern between favorable and unfavorable company. Śrīla Prabhupāda's teachings provide clear, uncompromising instructions regarding the avaiṣṇava (the non-devotee), warning sincere students to strictly avoid their association, reject their spiritual instructions, and decline the food they prepare, lest the devotional creeper be stunted or destroyed.
The Characteristics of an Avaiṣṇava
The Vedic scriptures do not evaluate a person based on their mundane social status or intellectual prowess, but on their level of surrender to the Supreme Lord. Śrīla Prabhupāda explains that anyone who lacks devotion to Kṛṣṇa—whether they are an ordinary materialist, a sophisticated philosopher, or even a highly born brāhmaṇa—is classified as an avaiṣṇava. Lacking true spiritual vision, such individuals are driven by selfish desires and exhibit a distinct lack of genuine compassion for the suffering of others.
- In Bhagavad-gita (BG 7.15), the distinction between Vaisnava and avaisnava is enunciated: Anyone who is not surrendered to Krsna is a most sinful person - duskrti, a rascal - mudha, and the lowest of men - naradhama.
- In other words, those who are after material enjoyment and those who are against the supremacy of the Lord are called avaisnava, and their company should be strictly avoided.
- Brahmana has six kinds of livelihood, sat-karma. Pathana pathana yajana yajana dana-pratigraha. Even such brahmana, if he's not Vaisnava, then he cannot become a guru. Avaisnava.
- Avaisnava sees another person is suffering; he doesn't care: "Let him suffer." We have come to that state. I heard from one of my disciples that here, in New York, if somebody is killed on the road, nobody will care. Is it a fact?
The Strict Rule Against Association
The foundation of Vaiṣṇava etiquette is the preservation of pure consciousness through proper association. Śrīla Prabhupāda repeatedly cites the direct instructions of Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu, who defined the primary behavior of a Vaiṣṇava as asat-saṅga-tyāga—giving up the company of worldly people. A serious devotee must understand that cooperating or intimately mixing with an avaiṣṇava is a direct impediment to spiritual progress.
- When asked, "What is the behavior of a Vaisnava?" Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu replied - Vaisnava must avoid the company of an avaisnava - asat.
- The word asat refers to an avaisnava, that is, one who is not a Vaisnava. Asat-sanga-tyaga, - ei vaisnava-acara (CC Madhya 22.87). A Vaisnava must be very strict in this respect and should not at all cooperate with an avaisnava.
- The word asat (from Narottama dasa Thakura's song - sat-sanga chadi' kainu asate vilasa) refers to an avaisnava, one who is not a devotee of Krsna, and sat refers to a Vaisnava, Krsna's devotee.
- One should always seek the association of Vaisnavas and not spoil one's life by mixing with avaisnavas.
The Prohibition on Hearing
Hearing about the Lord is the most powerful method for awakening spiritual realization, but only when the sound vibration is transmitted through an authorized source. Śrīla Prabhupāda strongly reiterates Śrīla Sanātana Gosvāmī's injunction forbidding devotees from hearing kṛṣṇa-kathā from an avaiṣṇava. When a Māyāvādī or a professional reciter speaks about Kṛṣṇa, their lack of devotion turns the message into a dangerous poison that bewilders the listener.
- Srila Sanatana Gosvami has advised us to hear about Krsna from a Vaisnava. He has explicitly forbidden us to hear from an avaisnava.
- Quoting from Padma Purana, Srila Sanatana Gosvami warns that one should not hear anything about Krsna from an avaisnava, however great a mundane scholar he may be.
- Sanatana Gosvami has, in his Hari-bhakti-vilasa, has very strongly recommended that "Don't hear anything from, about Krsna, from the Mayavadis or the avaisnavas."
- There is a very famous Bhagavata reader in Bombay. He is a pakka avaisnava. But he is going on, and he is infusing poison - means those who are hearing him, they will never be able to understand what is Krsna. They will never be able. It is so poisonous.
The Injunctions on Food and Prasādam
The consciousness of the cook is subtly transferred into the food they prepare. Therefore, Śrīla Prabhupāda establishes a strict dietary rule: a Vaiṣṇava must not accept food cooked by an avaiṣṇava. Even if the non-devotee is a strict vegetarian and highly hygienic, their lack of loving surrender means they have no power to actually offer the food to Lord Viṣṇu. Consequently, their food remains unpurified and cannot be accepted as mahā-prasādam.
- An avaisnava may be a vegetarian and a very clean cook, but because he cannot offer Visnu the food he cooks, it cannot be accepted as maha-prasadam. It is better that a Vaisnava abandon such food as untouchable.
- Ordinary food cooked by an avaisnava should not be accepted by a Vaisnava. Even if an avaisnava cooks food without fault, he cannot offer it to Lord Visnu, and it cannot be accepted as maha-prasadam.
- The word apavitra anna refers to food that is unacceptable for a Vaisnava. In other words, a Vaisnava cannot accept any food offered by an avaisnava in the name of maha-prasadam. This should be a principle for all Vaisnavas.
- If an avaisnava offers food in the name of maha-prasadam, it should not be accepted. Such food cannot be prasadam because an avaisnava cannot offer anything to the Lord.
Conclusion
In conclusion, understanding the nature of an avaiṣṇava is essential for protecting one's spiritual life. Śrīla Prabhupāda teaches that the Kṛṣṇa consciousness movement is entirely based on purity. By firmly avoiding the association of non-devotees, refusing to hear their poisonous interpretations of scripture, and exclusively honoring food that has been genuinely offered to the Supreme Lord by a pure Vaiṣṇava, a devotee safely guards their consciousness from material contamination and ensures steady progress on the path back to Godhead.
