Attaining Peace - The Supreme Peace Formula
Throughout history, humanity has relentlessly pursued the dream of a peaceful world. We form global coalitions, sign treaties, and hold massive rallies, yet the world remains perpetually plagued by conflict, anxiety, and distress. Śrīla Prabhupāda's teachings diagnose the root cause of this collective failure, explaining that attaining peace is absolutely impossible as long as society ignores the spiritual dimension of life. To find true tranquility, we must turn to the flawless formula provided in the Vedic literatures.
Illusion of Material Peace
Modern civilization tries to manufacture peace while actively ignoring the Supreme Personality of Godhead. Śrīla Prabhupāda points out the inherent contradiction in this approach. Because people are engrossed in the bodily concept of life, they constantly fight over temporary material resources. Without spiritual education and Kṛṣṇa consciousness, all attempts at worldly harmony simply end in frustration and confusion.
- Mr. John Lennon is anxious for peace in the world, so also is everyone anxious for peace in the world, but it should be known how that peace can be attained. If we keep the human society as it is, there is no possibility of peace.
- Because people are not devotees of God, therefore despite all education, all advancement of scientific knowledge, still they are dealing like cats and dogs. They are not peaceful. The peace cannot be attained without Krsna consciousness.
- Since these living entities have very little knowledge of self-realization, they are not getting any relief, although they are very anxious to attain peace of mind and some substantial happiness.
- Do you think you have attained peace? Can anyone of you say, "Yes, I am completely in peace." Then why the youngsters are so much frustrated and confused?
The Supreme Peace Formula
To cure the disease of material anxiety, Lord Kṛṣṇa provides a direct and perfect prescription in the Bhagavad-gītā (5.29). Śrīla Prabhupāda frequently refers to this verse as the ultimate peace formula. By simply understanding and accepting that Kṛṣṇa is the supreme enjoyer, the supreme proprietor of everything, and the best friend of all living entities, one is immediately relieved from the heavy burden of material competition.
- The sages, knowing Me as the ultimate purpose of all sacrifices and austerities, the Supreme Lord of all planets and demigods and the benefactor and well-wisher of all living entities, attain peace from the pangs of material miseries. Bhagavad-Gita 5.29 - 1972.
- This is the way to attain santi, peace. Understand Krsna - that He is the supreme enjoyer, the supreme proprietor, and the supreme friend of everyone.
- A person in full consciousness of Me, knowing Me to be the ultimate beneficiary of all sacrifices and austerities, the Supreme Lord of all planets and demigods, and the benefactor and well-wisher of all living entities, attains peace.
- The conditioned souls within the clutches of illusory energy are all anxious to attain peace in the material world. But they do not know the formula for peace, which is explained in this part of the Bhagavad-gita.
Renunciation and Devotion
Theoretical knowledge of the peace formula must be combined with practical action. Śrīla Prabhupāda explains that the mind cannot be peaceful if it is constantly agitated by the desire for sense gratification. True tranquility is attained when a person completely gives up the false ego, stops laboring for their own selfish enjoyment, and instead dedicates the fruits of all their activities to the Supreme Lord.
- A person who has given up all desires for sense gratification, who lives free from desires, who has given up all sense of proprietorship and is devoid of false ego - he alone can attain real peace. Bhagavad-Gita 2.71 - 1972.
- The steadily devoted soul attains unadulterated peace because he offers the result of all activities to Me; whereas a person who is not in union with the Divine, who is greedy for the fruits of his labor, becomes entangled. Bhagavad-Gita 5.12 - 1972.
- Better than knowledge, however, is meditation, and better than meditation is renunciation of the fruits of action, for by such renunciation one can attain peace of mind. Bhagavad-Gita 12.12 - 1972.
- If he (who wants to control the mind) acts whimsically, what is the possibility of the mind being controlled? When the mind is finally trained to the point where it will think of nothing but Krsna, it will attain peace and will become very tranquil.
Perfection of Tranquility
When one fully surrenders to Kṛṣṇa, the resulting peace is not a temporary cessation of war, but an eternal, spiritual reality. Śrīla Prabhupāda emphasizes that by chanting the holy names and engaging in unalloyed devotional service, a practitioner is cleansed of the lower modes of material nature. Such a pure devotee quickly achieves lasting peace and is guaranteed entrance into the supreme, eternal abode of the Lord.
- He quickly becomes righteous and attains lasting peace. O son of Kunti, declare it boldly that My devotee never perishes. BG 9.31 - 1972.
- O scion of Bharata, surrender unto Him utterly. By His grace you will attain transcendental peace and the supreme and eternal abode. Bhagavad-Gita 18.62 - 1972.
- A consummate yogi, who is perfect in understanding Lord Krsna, as is clearly stated herein (mat-cittah, mat-parah, mat-sthanam) by the Lord Himself, can attain real peace and can ultimately reach His supreme abode, the Krsna-loka.
- In this way (by chanting the Hare Krsna mantra and read Bhagavad-gita and Srimad-Bhagavatam) one purifies himself of the baser material modes (tamo-guna and rajo-guna) and, becoming freed from the greed of these modes, can attain complete peace of mind.
Conclusion
In conclusion, attaining peace is the natural result of awakening one's dormant Kṛṣṇa consciousness. Śrīla Prabhupāda teaches us that all worldly attempts at diplomacy and economic adjustment will fail because they ignore the true proprietor of the universe. By fully embracing the peace formula of the Bhagavad-gītā—recognizing Lord Kṛṣṇa as the ultimate enjoyer, owner, and friend—we can completely pacify our disturbed minds, transcend the dualities of material life, and eternally reside in the supreme tranquility of the spiritual world.
