Approaching a Real Person for Spiritual Truth
The modern world is deeply engrossed in the superficial covering of the living entity, completely neglecting the eternal consciousness within. To clear away this thick darkness, Śrīla Prabhupāda tirelessly presented the science of the soul and the necessity of approaching a genuine spiritual master. By receiving knowledge from an authentic source, one can break free from bodily misidentification and discover their true spiritual identity.
The Illusion of the Bodily Concept
Human society invests massive amounts of energy into maintaining and decorating the physical body, mistakenly believing it to be the self. This fundamental error is the root cause of all material suffering and existential confusion. To correct this fatal flaw, Śrīla Prabhupāda constantly emphasized that the body is merely a temporary garment. Ignoring the spirit soul while pampering the body is like polishing a birdcage while starving the bird inside.
- At the present moment we are not finding out our proper identity. We are seeing to the body. I see you, your body, and you see me, my body. We have no vision of the real person, which is, who is occupying this body.
- Because they (the people) have no knowledge of the spirit soul - they think the body is everything - so therefore knowledge is imperfect. Body is only the covering. Real person is the spirit soul. So the modern education has no knowledge of this.
- Materialistic person, the so-called scientist, philosopher, they know this body - the self. They do not know that the body is the cover of the self. This real self, the real person, goes to Krsna to live forever.
- When the person leaves this body it is dead lump of matter. So people are giving more importance to the lump of matter than to the real person within the body. Just like a bird is within the cage, it is being washed very nicely and no food to the bird.
Hearing from the Bona Fide Guru
Spiritual knowledge cannot be attained through mundane academic research or mental speculation. It must descend through an unbroken chain of self-realized teachers. Guiding his followers with immense compassion, Śrīla Prabhupāda insisted that one must submit to a bona fide guru to understand the absolute truth. Only someone who has actually seen the truth can impart the vision necessary to recognize the soul.
- Because you are rascal, you do not know. You learn it. One who knows the meaning. Tad-vijnanartham sa gurum evabhigacchet (MU 1.2.12). You are fool, rascal. How can you know the meaning? You must have to go to the real person.
- One should hear with rapt attention from the real person, and then he can at once realize the presence of Lord Krsna in every page. The secret of knowing Bhagavatam is mentioned here.
- Tad viddhi pranipatena pariprasnena sevaya. So we have to approach the real person who has seen. Then you'll get the right goal of life.
- This is basis of Gita. Tad viddhi pranipatena pariprasnena sevaya (BG 4.34). Learn from the real person, tattva-darsinah, who has seen, who has actual experience of the truth. Learn from him.
Identifying the True Self
The foundation of all Vedic instruction is the realization that we are not the material forms we currently inhabit. The soul is the active principle that provides consciousness and life to the otherwise dead lump of matter. In his profound explanations of the Bhagavad-gītā, Śrīla Prabhupāda teaches that human life truly begins only when one becomes disgusted with bodily darkness. We must look past the wrapper of flesh and bones to find the eternal force within.
- Krsna said, that dehino 'smin yatha dehe (BG 2.13), within this body the real person is there, just like within the shirt and coat the real person is there, so but the real person we never see.
- No one is fully aware or convinced that the real person is not the body. This is called darkness, and when one is disgusted with this darkness, human life begins.
- The beginning of Bhagavad-gita is to give lesson that we are not this body. It will be later on explained that the spirit soul, or the real person, is within this body. Just like we are here. We are within this shirt and coat, but we are not the shirt and coat.
- We are so much attached to this bag of flesh and bones, but those who are learned, they know that this body is nothing but flesh and bones. The real person, the real force, is the soul.
Serving the Supreme Person
Once an individual understands their own spiritual nature, the next step is to recognize their relationship with the Supreme Spirit. Real religion is not about sectarian labels, but rather about surrendering to the origin of all existence. Delivering the ultimate conclusion of the scriptures, Śrīla Prabhupāda clarifies that satisfying Kṛṣṇa is the only way to satisfy the self. Just as decorating the real person automatically decorates the reflection, serving Kṛṣṇa naturally fulfills the living entity.
- If the real person is decorated, the reflection is also decorated. Similarly, reality is Krsna. If you serve Krsna, then we are reflection. Krsna being satisfied, immediately we become satisfied.
- Krsna did not come to establish the so-called Hindu religion or Muslim religion or Christian religion. No. He came to establish real religion. Real religion means we have to submit, surrender to the real person.
- We request that "You take Krsna. You will be benefited." And actually it is being done. We don't present a false person. We present the real person, Krsna. Now, if you are misfortunate, you cannot take, that is your business. That is your business.
Conclusion
Overcoming the bodily conception of life is the first necessary step on the path of self-realization. By approaching a genuine spiritual master and learning the science of the soul, one can awaken to their eternal identity. As meticulously guided by Śrīla Prabhupāda, recognizing oneself as spirit and surrendering to the Supreme Person Kṛṣṇa constitutes the perfection of religion and the true success of human life.
