Apa-sampradāya - Avoiding Unauthorized Cults
The Vedic system of knowledge relies entirely on the descending process of the disciplic succession. To receive unadulterated spiritual truth, one must hear from a bona fide authority. However, Śrīla Prabhupāda warns that the material world is full of cheaters who dress as holy men to exploit the innocent. These unauthorized, deviant lineages are known as apa-sampradāyas. Recognizing and avoiding them is absolutely essential for anyone seriously attempting to practice pure Kṛṣṇa consciousness.
Meaning of Apa-sampradāya
A genuine sampradāya must trace its roots back to one of the four original authorities recognized in the Vedic literature: Lord Brahmā, Lord Śiva, the Kumāras, or the goddess Lakṣmī. Śrīla Prabhupāda explains that an apa-sampradāya is a group that operates entirely outside of these bona fide channels. By rejecting the strict conclusions of the scriptures, these groups present a fabricated version of religion that ultimately misguides their followers.
- In the present day there are many apasampradayas, or sampradayas which are not bona fide, which have no link to authorities like Lord Brahma, Lord Siva, the Kumaras or Laksmi. People are misguided by such sampradayas.
- There are many so-called followers of the Vaisnava cult in the line of Caitanya Mahaprabhu who do not scrupulously follow the conclusions of the sastras, and therefore they are considered to be apa-sampradaya, which means "outside of the sampradaya".
- Sahajiyas are amongst the thirteen rejected apa-sampradayas. In the name of Caitanya Mahaprabhu, there are so many apa-sampradayas. Apa-sampradaya means they present themselves as belonging to the Caitanya cult. But they are not at all bona fide.
The Thirteen Deviant Sects
Following the earthly pastimes of Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu, numerous groups attempted to capitalize on His massive spiritual influence. Śrīla Prabhupāda frequently points to the historical analysis of the great Vaiṣṇava ācārya Śrīla Bhaktivinoda Ṭhākura, who clearly identified thirteen specific apa-sampradāyas that falsely masquerade as followers of the Caitanya cult.
Invented Ways and Philosophical Flaws
The defining characteristic of an apa-sampradāya is its rejection of authority in favor of mental speculation. Śrīla Prabhupāda explains that despite Lord Caitanya's strict warnings to follow the scriptures, these deviant groups invented cheap, unauthorized practices. A prime example is the gaurāṅga-nāgarīs, who commit the grave philosophical error of treating Lord Caitanya—who appeared as a strict sannyāsī—as a mundane sense enjoyer.
- Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu warned all His followers not to become independent or impudent. Unfortunately, after the disappearance of Lord Caitanya Mahaprabhu, many apa-sampradayas (so-called followers) invented many ways not approved by the acaryas.
- After disappearance of Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu, so many apa-sampradaya sprang up. So we should be very much careful.
- These sahajiyas, they are going on in the name of Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu: aula, baula, kartta-bhaja, neda, daravesa, sani sahajiya, sakhibheki, like that, so many. They are apa-sampradaya.
- The gaura-nagaris, who place Lord Caitanya in the position of enjoyer and themselves as His enjoyed, are not approved by Lord Caitanya or by Lord Caitanya's followers. Instead of being blessed, the foolish imitators are left completely apart.
The Danger of Bad Association
Spiritual life is deeply affected by association. If one associates with those who misinterpret the scriptures and disrespect the ācāryas, their own devotional creeper will be destroyed. Therefore, Śrīla Prabhupāda issues a direct and uncompromising mandate to his disciples: to successfully follow the path of Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu, one must strictly avoid the association of all apa-sampradāya communities.
- In order to follow the disciplic succession of Lord Caitanya, one should not associate with these (aula, baula, kartabhaja, neda, daravesa, sani, sahajiya, sakhibheki, smarta, jata-gosani, ativadi, cudadhari and gauranga-nagari) apasampradaya communities.
- One should not associate with these apasampradaya communities.
Conclusion
Śrīla Prabhupāda's strictness regarding the apa-sampradāyas is born of supreme compassion. The path back to Godhead requires absolute purity and adherence to the teachings of the realized ācāryas. By remaining faithful to the genuine disciplic succession and avoiding the cheap imitations of the deviant sects, a sincere student guarantees their steady and safe progression in Kṛṣṇa consciousness.
