Answers of a Spiritual Master - The Science of Surrender and Inquiry
In the modern educational system, students are often encouraged to challenge their teachers and debate established facts. However, the acquisition of transcendental knowledge operates on a completely different paradigm. Śrīla Prabhupāda teaches that spiritual truth cannot be conquered by mundane intellect or aggressive challenging. It must be received through the descending process. When a sincere seeker approaches a bona fide guru with humility, the answers of a spiritual master possess the power to instantly dissipate the darkness of material illusion.
The Prerequisite of Surrender
Before one even asks a question, the proper consciousness must be established. Śrīla Prabhupāda strictly advises that a student must be in a state of surrender (praṇipāta). If one is not prepared to accept the conclusions provided by the guru, posing questions is simply a waste of time. The spiritual master is under no obligation to entertain the idle curiosities or arrogant challenges of non-devotees.
- Don't waste your time by questioning some spiritual master or somebody unless you have pranipat. You must be ready to accept the answer which he gives; then make inquiry.
- You must find out a suitable person where you can question and get the proper answer, a spiritual master. That means surrender. Then question. Question is not a challenge. Question is to understand.
- An outsider has no right to put any question because he is not surrendered. And a spiritual master is not obliged to answer anyone except to his disciple. This is the Vedic way.
- A disciple always inquires from the spiritual master, and the spiritual master answers the question, provided the disciple is very gentle and devoted.
Qualifications of the Master
A student must be careful about whom they approach for guidance. Śrīla Prabhupāda explains that only a genuinely realized soul can provide absolute answers. A bona fide spiritual master must be thoroughly learned in the Vedic literature and must have practically realized the Supreme Personality of Godhead; otherwise, he will simply mislead the innocent inquirer.
- An intelligent person must inquire from the spiritual master about the goal of life. A bona fide spiritual master can answer all such questions because he has seen the real truth.
- The spiritual master must also be well versed and learned so that he may be able to answer all these inquiries from the devotees.
- You must be qualified to in..., inquisitive to understand the spiritual science, and the spiritual master should be also qualified to answer your inquisitiveness. Then the relationship is nice, not one-sided.
- You should question, also put your question, to a person who can actually answer. That means you must question only to the spiritual master. Otherwise, you may be misled. He may give you some wrong information.
Dynamics of Transcendental Dialogue
The interaction between the guru and the disciple is highly dynamic. Śrīla Prabhupāda notes that a master does not always answer questions sequentially; he answers according to the necessity and spiritual maturity of the student. Sometimes, the spiritual master will even test the disciple's intelligence before revealing the highest, most confidential truths of devotional service.
- Maharaja Pariksit asked many questions, some of them very curiously, to know things as they are, but it is not necessary for the master to answer them in the order of the disciple's inquiries, one after the other.
- Sukadeva Gosvami tested the intelligence of Maharaja Pariksit, who passed the examination by refusing to accept this process (of atonement) as genuine. Now Pariksit Maharaja is expecting another answer from his spiritual master, Sukadeva Gosvami.
- Because Pariksit Maharaja wanted to clear up the situation, his spiritual master answered him very intelligently, "Why are you again asking about the same subject matter which has already been explained to you? Why are you so forgetful?"
- The question is enquired by the student, and the answer is given by the spiritual master. So how is that (Caitanya asking)? - He (Ramananda Raya) was feeling little agitation. So Caitanya Mahaprabhu immediately encouraged him, - Don't hesitate.
Historical Examples of Perfect Inquiries
The Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam is entirely composed of profound questions and perfect answers. Śrīla Prabhupāda frequently references the historical dialogues between exalted personalities—such as Śukadeva Gosvāmī answering Mahārāja Parīkṣit, Sūta Gosvāmī answering Śaunaka Ṛṣi, and Prahlāda Mahārāja answering his father—as the ultimate blueprints for how transcendental knowledge is successfully transmitted.
- Before Maharaja Pariksit he (Sukadeva Gosvami) recited Srimad-Bhagavatam and answered the questions of Maharaja Pariksit unhesitatingly, and thus both the master and the disciple got salvation.
- Since Maharaja Pariksit was a great devotee. the answers of his guru, Sukadeva Gosvami, concerning karma-kanda and jnana-kanda could not satisfy him.
- This Sanskrit verse (of CC Adi 2.11) appears as the eleventh verse of the First Canto, Second Chapter, of Srimad-Bhagavatam, where Suta Gosvami answers the questions of the sages headed by Saunaka Rsi concerning the essence of all scriptural instructions.
- According to Srimad-Bhagavatam (Srimad Bhagavatam 7.5.23-24): This is a statement given by Prahlada Maharaja in answer to a question raised by his father. Prahlada Maharaja said - To hear or chant about Visnu, to remember Him, to serve His lotus feet, to worship Him.
Conclusion
Śrīla Prabhupāda guarantees that all of life's perplexities can be resolved if one simply finds a bona fide representative of Kṛṣṇa. By casting aside our false prestige, abandoning the challenging spirit, and submissively hearing the answers of a spiritual master, our consciousness is immediately elevated from the darkness of material anxiety to the brilliant light of eternal devotional service.
