Annihilation of the Cosmic Manifestation Shows That Only Kṛṣṇa Remains
The cosmic manifestation appears vast and powerful, but it is temporary and fully dependent on the Supreme Lord. Śrīla Prabhupāda explains that Kṛṣṇa exists before creation, maintains everything during manifestation, and remains after annihilation. The universe is not independent; it rests on the Lord's energy and returns to Him when time dissolves it. This understanding gives the devotee a clear vision: cosmic change is temporary, but Kṛṣṇa is the eternal shelter.
Kṛṣṇa Exists Before, During, and After Creation
The Supreme Lord is not produced by the cosmic manifestation. He exists before the universe appears, remains present while it is maintained, and continues to exist after its annihilation. This truth defeats the idea that the universe is ultimate or self-sufficient. The beginning, middle, and end of cosmic time all point to Kṛṣṇa as the eternal reality.
- In Srimad-Bhagavatam (SB 2.9.33) it is said that He (Krsna) exists before the manifestation of this cosmic world, that He exists during its continuance, and that He continues to exist after its annihilation.
- Krsna says, "Prior to the cosmic creation, only I exist, and no phenomena exist, either gross, subtle or primordial. After creation, only I exist in everything, and after annihilation, only I remain eternally."
- Prior to the cosmic creation, only I (the Supreme Personality of Godhead) exist, and no phenomena exist, either gross, subtle or primordial. After creation, only I exist in everything, and after annihilation, only I remain eternally.
- My dear Lord, You alone manifest Yourself as the entire cosmic manifestation, for You existed before the creation, You exist after the annihilation, and You are the maintainer between the beginning and the end.
The Universe Enters the Lord at Annihilation
At the time of cosmic annihilation, the material elements do not vanish into nothingness. They enter subtler causes, and ultimately the entire manifestation enters the Supreme Lord's energy. This process shows that material nature has no independent existence apart from its source. What appears as dissolution is actually the withdrawal of the Lord's manifested energy.
- At the time of annihilation, the five gross elements - earth, water, fire, air and ether - enter into the mind, intelligence and false ego (ahankara), and the entire cosmic manifestation enters into the spiritual energy of the Supreme Personality of Godhead.
- At the time of cosmic annihilation, when everything, manifested and unmanifested, is annihilated by the force of time, the 5 gross elements enter into the subtle conception, and the manifested categories enter into the unmanifested substance - SB 10.3.25.
- Devaki prayed - (After cosmic annihilation) the mahat-tattva enters, by the force of time, into the nonmanifested total material energy, the total material energy enters into the energetic pradhana, and the pradhana enters into You - the Supreme Personality of Godhead.
- Everything in the cosmic manifestation emanates from the Absolute Truth, remains in the Absolute Truth, and after annihilation again enters the Absolute Truth.
Creation, Maintenance, and Annihilation Depend on His Will
The cosmic manifestation is created, maintained, and annihilated by the Supreme Lord's will. Brahmā, Viṣṇu, and Śiva may function in these cosmic roles, but they do so through the Lord's potencies and arrangement. Śrīla Prabhupāda presents the universe as dependent at every stage, never autonomous. The Lord's will stands behind all cosmic activity, from the first manifestation to final dissolution.
- Being present in the three phases of cosmic manifestation - creation, maintenance and annihilation - You are the Supreme Truth - 10.2.26.
- For the purpose of creation, maintenance and annihilation of this cosmic manifestation, there are three lords - Brahma, Visnu and Siva (Mahesvara). The material body is finished at the time of annihilation.
- The manifested cosmic nature is created at a certain period by the will of the Lord. It is maintained for some time, and then it is annihilated by His will. Therefore, the supreme will is behind all cosmic activities.
- You should always know that this cosmic manifestation is created, maintained and annihilated by the will of the Supreme Personality of Godhead. Consequently, everything within this cosmic manifestation is under the control of the Lord.
The Lord Remains Unaffected by Cosmic Change
Although the Lord creates, maintains, and annihilates the cosmic manifestation, He is never touched by material qualities. His energies act, but His transcendental nature remains unchanged. This is why the Lord can be both the source of the universe and aloof from it. The devotee understands this as the Lord's inconceivable supremacy, not as contradiction.
- Darkness is entrusted to Lord Siva because he annihilates the cosmos. The creation, annihilation and maintenance of this cosmic manifestation are conducted by Your potencies, yet You are always unaffected by those qualities.
- The entire cosmic manifestation is but an expansion of the Lord's energy; everything rests in Him, yet He exists separately, beyond creation, maintenance and annihilation.
- The universe appears to be created, maintained and annihilated by Him because He has created this cosmic manifestation by His external energy. Nonetheless, He remains inactive in His spiritual energy and is untouched by the activities of the material energy.
- Then as Sankarsana, He (God) annihilates the cosmic manifestation. Yet despite the creation, maintenance and destruction of the cosmos, the Lord is not affected.
Demigods and Worlds Are Also Temporary
The demigods have high positions within the universe, but they remain connected to the temporary cosmic manifestation. When the universe is annihilated, their functions are also withdrawn. Worship that ignores this temporary position cannot give ultimate shelter. Only the Supreme Lord remains beyond cosmic dissolution, and therefore only He can be the final refuge.
- Because these (demigod) worshipers do not know that when the entire material cosmic manifestation is annihilated, the demigods, who are the departmental heads of that manifestation, will be vanquished.
- When the cosmic manifestation is annihilated, these different expansions of Narayana's potencies (the demigods) will merge into Narayana. In other words, all these demigods will die. Their living force will be withdrawn, and they will merge into Narayana.
- The words caksur yasya na risyati mean that although we cannot see Him (The Supreme Personality of Godhead), this does not mean that He cannot see us. Nor does He die when the cosmic manifestation is annihilated.
- The seedlike spiritual sparks who are dominated by the desire to lord it over the material nature exist in a dormant state after the cosmic manifestation is annihilated.
Cosmic Annihilation Proves the Need for Eternal Shelter
If the entire universe can be withdrawn by time, then no temporary arrangement within it can be final shelter. The body, the demigods, the worlds, and the elements all depend on the Lord's energy. Śrīla Prabhupāda shows that annihilation is therefore not a nihilistic conclusion but a devotional revelation. The destruction of temporary forms points the intelligent soul toward Kṛṣṇa, the eternal source and reservoir of everything.
- The Supreme Lord is the cause of the cosmic manifestation, He maintains it after creation, and after annihilation the Lord is the reservoir of everything.
- The whole cosmic manifestation becomes possible by the grace of the Supreme Lord, it exists by the grace of the Supreme Lord, and when annihilated it merges into the existence of the Supreme Lord.
- They (paraphernalia of the cosmic universe) have come to be out of His energy, they rest on His energy, and after annihilation they merge into Him. Nothing is, therefore, different from Him, but at the same time the Lord is always different from them.
- At that time (of cosmic annihilation), You (Krsna) alone remain, and You are known as Ananta Sesa-naga - SB 10.3.25.
Conclusion
Annihilation of the cosmic manifestation shows that only Kṛṣṇa remains because everything else depends on His will and energy. The universe appears, stays for some time, and is withdrawn, but the Supreme Lord remains unchanged before, during, and after its existence. Śrīla Prabhupāda teaches that this vision frees the soul from trusting temporary shelters and directs it toward the eternal source. When cosmic dissolution is understood properly, it becomes a revelation of Kṛṣṇa's supremacy, permanence, and transcendental shelter.
