Aniruddha the grandson of Kṛṣṇa - The Lord's Heroic Expansion
The Vedic histories document the presence of the Supreme Personality of Godhead descending with His complete retinue of eternal associates. Among these illustrious personalities is Aniruddha (Kṛṣṇa's grandson). Śrīla Prabhupāda explains that Aniruddha is a direct expansion of the Lord Himself, possessing unparalleled beauty and strength. His pastimes on earth—marked by mystic kidnappings, fierce battles, and divine romance—beautifully illustrate the dynamic and adventurous nature of the Yadu dynasty.
The Divine Identity and Marriages
The Supreme Lord expands Himself in multiple forms to execute His pastimes and manage the cosmic manifestation. Śrīla Prabhupāda explains that Aniruddha is part of the original quadruple expansion (catur-vyūha). Appearing as the son of Pradyumna, Aniruddha's early life was marked by his first marriage to Rocanā, an event that unfortunately culminated in Lord Balarāma killing the envious Rukmī.
- When Krishna appeared on the earth Pradyumna appeared as His son born of Rukmini. The immediate expansion of Krishna is Baladeva who appeared as elder brother of Krishna and Baladeva expands Himself further as Sankarsana, Vasudeva, Pradyumna, Aniruddha.
- The eldest son of Rukmini, Pradyumna, was married with Mayavati from his very birth, and afterwards he married Rukmavati, the daughter of his maternal uncle, Rukmi. From Rukmavati, Pradyumna had a son named Aniruddha.
- When the negotiation of the marriage of Aniruddha with Rocana was complete, big marriage party accompanied Aniruddha and started from Dvaraka. They traveled until Bhojakata, which Rukmi had colonized after his sister had been kidnapped by Krsna.
- One blow, Rukmi fell down immediately and was dead and gone. Thus Rukmi was killed by Balarama on that auspicious occasion of Aniruddha's marriage. These things are not very uncommon in ksatriya society.
Uṣā's Dream and Citralekhā's Magic
Aniruddha's beauty was legendary throughout the universe. Śrīla Prabhupāda describes how Uṣā, the daughter of the powerful demon Bāṇāsura, saw Aniruddha in a dream and immediately lost her heart to him. With the help of her magically gifted friend Citralekhā, who identified Aniruddha through drawn portraits, the sleeping prince was mystically transported from his bed in Dvārakā straight into Uṣā's private quarters.
- When she (Usa) had attained the age of marriage and was sleeping amongst her many girlfriends, she dreamt that Aniruddha was by her side and that she was enjoying a conjugal relationship with him, although she had never actually seen him or heard of him.
- When Usa saw the picture of Pradyumna, she became a little bashful, but when she saw the picture of Aniruddha, she became so bashful that she immediately lowered her head and smiled, having found the man she was seeking.
- Citralekha, by her mystic power, immediately brought Aniruddha, in that sleeping condition, to the city of Sonitapura so that Usa might see her desired husband. Usa immediately bloomed in happiness and began to enjoy the company of Aniruddha.
- Usa and Aniruddha lived together in the palace, and day after day Usa's love for Aniruddha grew four times upon four. Usa pleased Aniruddha with valuable garments, flowers, garlands, scents and incense.
Discovered by Bāṇāsura
Immersed in Uṣā's affectionate service, Aniruddha lost track of time. However, this secret romance could not last forever. Śrīla Prabhupāda vividly recounts the moment Bāṇāsura discovered them. Far from being intimidated by the demon's vast guards, Aniruddha picked up a heavy iron rod and fought like a lion, devastating the attackers before Bāṇāsura was forced to use a mystic snake-noose (nāga-pāśa) to subdue him.
- In such an atmosphere of love and service, Aniruddha practically forgot himself and could not recall how many days he had been away from his real home.
- Banasura was very angry. When Banasura saw him, Aniruddha was engaged in playing with Usa. Aniruddha was nicely dressed, and Usa had garlanded him with various beautiful flowers.
- Under the order of Banasura, the soldiers from all sides attempted to capture and arrest him. When they dared to come before him, Aniruddha struck them with the rod, breaking their heads, legs, arms and thighs, and one after another they fell to the ground.
- Banasura knew various arts of fighting, and by the grace of Lord Siva he knew how to arrest his enemy by the use of a naga-pasa, snake-noose, and thus he seized Aniruddha as he came out of the palace.
The Great Rescue
The sudden disappearance of Aniruddha caused immense anxiety in Dvārakā. Śrīla Prabhupāda explains that when Nārada Muni finally revealed Aniruddha's location, Kṛṣṇa and Balarāma immediately marched on Śoṇitapura. This rescue mission resulted in a legendary battle between Lord Kṛṣṇa and Lord Śiva. After Kṛṣṇa severed Bāṇāsura's numerous arms, the demon surrendered, and the young couple was returned home in glorious triumph.
- Fortunately, one day the great sage Narada came and informed the family about Aniruddha's disappearance from the palace.
- The meeting of Aniruddha and Usa, who was Banasura's very beautiful daughter, caused a great fight between Lord Krsna and Lord Siva.
- When Banasura was blessed by Lord Krsna in this way, he came before the Lord and bowed down, touching his head to the earth. He immediately arranged to have his daughter Usa seated with Aniruddha on a nice chariot and then he presented them before Lord Krsna.
- All the people of Dvaraka, having received the news that Lord Krsna was returning with Aniruddha and Usa in great opulence, decorated every corner of the city with flags, festoons and garlands.
Conclusion
The pastimes of Aniruddha demonstrate that the Supreme Lord and His immediate expansions are never subject to the mundane laws of material nature. Whether sitting peacefully in the opulent palaces of Dvārakā, accepting the spontaneous loving worship of Uṣā, or fearlessly fighting off hordes of demoniac soldiers, Aniruddha's activities are eternally transcendent, providing immense bliss to all devotees who hear them.
