Animosity - The Disease of the Material World
Throughout history, leaders have repeatedly attempted to establish peace through diplomacy, treaties, and political organizations, yet global and personal conflicts remain ever-present. The Vedic literature reveals that as long as the fundamental disease of the heart is ignored, superficial peace formulas will always fail. Śrīla Prabhupāda explains that this disease is animosity, an inevitable byproduct of the conditional state of material life that can only be cured through genuine spiritual realization.
The Root of Material Conflict
In this world, peace treaties are constantly signed, yet war remains a permanent fixture of human society. Why? Śrīla Prabhupāda explains that the root cause of all animosity is false proprietorship. Everything in the universe belongs to the Supreme Lord, but when conditioned souls falsely claim ownership over land and resources, intense envy and conflict automatically erupt, creating a blazing fire of material suffering.
- Actually the land is there. It belongs to God, and we are claiming, "This is my land," "This is my land," and therefore there is struggle, there is war, there are animosity and so on.
- In materialistic life, people must certainly engage in activities of animosity. Materialistic life is therefore compared to samsara-davanala, a blazing forest fire that automatically takes place.
- In the conditional state, every living being is envious of another living being, but in the liberated state there is an absence of animosity.
- Religious principles are taught for the sake of name and fame only and not for the sake of practical action. Thus there is animosity not only in social and political fields but in the field of religion as well.
The Universal Struggle
The conflict between the godly and the envious is not a recent development; it has existed since the dawn of creation. Śrīla Prabhupāda frequently references the perpetual animosity between the devas (demigods) and the asuras (demons). Throughout Vedic history, envious personalities like Kaṁsa and Śālva were completely absorbed in harboring deep animosity toward Kṛṣṇa and His devotees, illustrating the intense dualities present within the material universe.
- In the days of yore, many long years ago, there was animosity between the devas and the asuras, and the same spirit still continues, for the devotees of Lord Siva and Goddess Durga are always envious of Vaisnavas, who are devotees of Lord Visnu.
- Although there is perpetual animosity between the demons and demigods, Narada Muni is welcomed everywhere.
- Kamsa finally decided not to kill Devaki right away but to wait for the inevitable future. But his mind became absorbed in animosity against the Personality of Godhead.
- Having acquired such a wonderful airplane, Salva flew it to the city of Dvaraka, because his main purpose in obtaining the airplane was to attack the city of the Yadus, toward whom he maintained a constant feeling of animosity.
The Preacher's Risk
Bringing the message of God to a materially absorbed society is a dangerous task. Śrīla Prabhupāda points out that speaking the unvarnished truth often provokes anger and animosity from the general public, as was seen in the life of Lord Jesus Christ. Even today, spreading Kṛṣṇa consciousness can generate animosity from materialistic parents. Yet, out of supreme compassion, the pure devotee boldly faces this animosity to save the conditioned souls.
- When one preaches he must tell the truth. Just like Lord Jesus Christ. The people did not like his preaching, but he did not stop his preaching. That is another point. You see? So in the preaching propaganda there is possibility of creating animosity.
- Animosity between parents and the Krsna consciousness movement has existed since time immemorial. Even Narada Muni was condemned, not to speak of others. Nevertheless, Narada Muni never gives up his mission.
- People in general, being bewildered by the illusory energy of the Supreme Personality of Godhead, are always engaged in animosity toward one another. But devotees, even at the risk of their own temporary lives, try to save them.
- For Narada Muni, the door of every house is open. Although there is perpetual animosity between the demons and demigods, Narada Muni is welcomed everywhere.
The Pure Devotee's Freedom
While the material world is defined by duality and envy, the spiritual world is completely free from it. Śrīla Prabhupāda emphasizes that a pure devotee harbors no animosity toward anyone. By practicing strict self-control and following the footsteps of exalted personalities like Prahlāda Mahārāja, a devotee achieves this liberated state. The supreme power of this non-envious consciousness was perfectly displayed by Lord Caitanya, whose divine presence caused even wild jungle animals to forget their natural animosity.
- The pure devotee is the noblest of all, and he has no feelings of animosity towards anyone. Duality due to animosity is a creation of this material world. There is no such thing in the spiritual world, which is the absolute reality.
- Yoga practice, the process of purifying one's existential identity, is based mainly on self-control. Without self-control one cannot practice freedom from animosity.
- In order to follow in his (Prahlada's) footsteps, saintly persons will try to emulate his character by practicing freedom from animosity, just as the purifying processes rectify gold of inferior quality.
- This was actually proved by Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu Himself when He passed through the forest of Jharikhanda. At that time the tigers, snakes, deer and all other animals abandoned their natural animosity and began chanting and dancing in sankirtana.
Conclusion
Śrīla Prabhupāda guarantees that global peace cannot be legislated; it must be cultivated within the heart through spiritual realization. When we understand that the Supreme Personality of Godhead is the true proprietor of everything and the supreme friend of all living entities, our material envies dissolve. By chanting the holy names and practicing devotional service, we eradicate the animosity within our own hearts and help bring genuine harmony to the world.
