Animal Civilization - Overhauling the Bodily Concept of Life
We live in an era that prides itself on extraordinary technological, medical, and economic achievements. We travel to space, communicate instantly across the globe, and build massive cities. Yet, despite these feats, the Vedic literature provides a sobering assessment of our current status. Śrīla Prabhupāda boldly explains that because modern society ignores the eternal soul and caters exclusively to the temporary physical body, it cannot be considered an advanced human culture. It is, in fact, merely a highly polished animal civilization.
Bodily Concept of Life
The foundation of any society dictates its trajectory. Śrīla Prabhupāda teaches that the foundational flaw of modern society is the "bodily concept of life"—the illusion that we are our physical bodies. When leaders and citizens alike believe they are simply temporary combinations of matter, their entire civilization becomes geared toward bodily survival and sense gratification, exactly like the animals in the jungle.
- If we say frankly, everyone is in the bodily concept of life. Therefore the modern civilization is animal civilization. It is not human civilization. Human civilization will begin when one will understand that - I am not this body. I am spirit soul.
- He's undergoing a great struggle for life under the impression, under the bodily impression that he is this body, but this kind of impression or understanding is animal civilization.
- If we don't cultivate the spiritual side, simply we take care of the bodily side, then we remain animals. And because people are taking only care for the body, this is animal civilization.
- The whole world is going on in a way which is animal civilization. So if you want to be happy, you have to come to the spiritual platform, reality. That is wanted, thorough overhauling.
Four Animal Propensities
What distinguishes a human from an animal? It is not the ability to eat fine foods, sleep in comfortable beds, engage in sophisticated mating rituals, or build advanced weapons for defense. Śrīla Prabhupāda points out that these four activities are perfectly executed by animals. Merely improving the standard of these four bodily demands is an expansion of animalism, not true human progress.
- These four principles are common between human being and animal. So advancement of these four principles is not human civilization. That is animal civilization. That is not human civilization.
- Flesh is eaten by tigers, dogs. So if you have learned how to eat flesh, does it mean that you advance in civilization? It is the business of tigers and dogs. The dog civilization.
- The animals, they are suffering, but they do not care for it. they forget. So practically this sense gratification civilization means animal civilization. A little polished, that's all.
- Everyone is trying to make economic development by exploiting the world. Digging the earth, the mines. This is lowest stage, just like animal civilization.
The Need for Varnasrama and Tapasya
To rise above the animal platform, a society must adopt a regulated system designed to elevate consciousness. Śrīla Prabhupāda explains that the Vedic system of varṇāśrama-dharma provides this exact framework. By organizing society according to natural qualities and encouraging tapasya (godly austerity), citizens are gradually trained to control their animalistic urges and focus on their spiritual development.
- Actually human civilization begins when this institution of varnasrama is accepted. Otherwise it is animal civilization - eating, sleeping, mating, and dancing, that's all.
- Vedic culture is actual civilization, varnasrama-dharma. That is the beginning of civilization. Without Vedic culture and varnasrama-dharma it is the animal civilization.
- This is an animal civilization (where the students are even smoking in front of their teacher, and it is tolerated). This is not human civilization. No tapasya, no brahmacari life. Real civilization means tapo divyam (Srimad Bhagavatam 5.5.1), godly austerity.
- Unless one comes to this standard of civilization, varnasrama-dharma, that is animal civilization. So we prefer animal civilization. Therefore we are living like animal also, fighting like cats and dogs and suffering like cats and dogs also.
The Cure of Self-Realization
Human intelligence is a rare and precious gift, specifically awarded by nature so the soul can inquire about the Absolute Truth. Śrīla Prabhupāda established the Kṛṣṇa consciousness movement to remind humanity of this supreme duty. By shifting our valuable time and energy away from unnecessary bodily comforts and redirecting it toward self-realization, we can completely reform this degraded society.
- We cannot spare our valuable time for bodily comforts, sacrificing our real aim of life, self-realization. That is not civilization. That is animal civilization. First consideration is self-realization.
- In order to stop this civilization of dogs and hogs, the Krsna consciousness movement is essential. Krsna consciousness means to take instruction from Krsna.
- You have created this animal civilization. Now they are coming out as naked animals. This is the result. Now you have to reform them. That reformation is Krsna consciousness. So you have to make an example, what is actually human life.
- Prahlada Maharaja says, "Don't waste your time in the matter of animal civilization." Na tat prayaso kartavyo. It is very important verse. Everyone is trying to improve the condition of animal life, that's all. Eating, sleeping, sex and defense.
Conclusion
Śrīla Prabhupāda's critique is not meant to condemn humanity, but to wake us up from a dangerous illusion. If we continue to exploit the earth simply to gratify our physical senses, we forfeit the immense spiritual opportunity of the human form. By embracing the path of Kṛṣṇa consciousness and making self-realization our primary goal, we step out of the jungle of animal civilization and into the true light of human perfection.
